Item Awareness and Use of Digital Collection by Scientists(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Sahu, J.R.; Seth, M.K.; Ramesh, D.BBy considering the opinion of the scientists as the best means of evaluation of the collections of a library. the authors have conducted a survey of the opinion of the scientists of the Regional Research Laboratory. Bhubaneswar in order to find out the budget allocation on electronic publications, use of CD-ROM databases and preferences of computerised library services like on-line. CD-ROM and INTERNET services for their research purposes. For effective management of information. the library administration should take into consideration the opinion of the scientists and provide E-mail and INTERNET based services to the users. In order to have sharing of resources. the authors have suggested a network of libraries and information centres in the city of Bhubaneswar.Item CD-ROM - An Information Storage and Retrieval Tool(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Sharma, R.S.; Patnaik, RachnaInformation Retrieval is becoming increasingly dependant on physical mechanisms like computer, telecommunications, Multimedia, CD-ROM, Internet, WORM, modem etc. Among these the CD-ROM databases are costeffective. Due to advancement of electronic sector more and more users are using CD-ROM for retrieving information as it follows Hypertext system. They are unique because large volumes of data can be stored at a very low price. The information contained in CD-ROM include text, still images, audio, digital video and animation. The authors mention about the advantages of CD-ROMs and provide the status of CD-ROM server at SAC Library, ISRO.Item CDS - ISIS for Library and Information Management . Some Developments(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Sandha, D.P.; Ramesh, D.B.; Dalai, B.K.CDS - ISIS package has helped many Library & Information professionals to create various in- house databases in India. Majority of the library & Information Centres in India use this package in comparision to other packages. The number of licensed users of CDS I ISIS are nearly 1400 at present. The authors have provided instances where CDS I ISIS is used as a tool for library computerisation particularly in housekeeping activities like ILL. FCE. eNC. IEEE and NEWS; cataloguing and indexing; circulation; acquisition. CAS & SOl. and its use in INTERNET. The package is more popular among the academic and research institutions in comparision to private industries. It helps the newcomers to learn various concepts and approaches to design in-house databases.Item Collection Development and Organisation of Electronic Publications in Academic and Research Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Kittur, K.N.The availability of new technologies, high speed processing, improved disk space to store large volume of data at a lower price encouraged the growth of variety of publications in machine readable forms i.e. the electronic publications. The author discusses the types and selection of such publications available on floppy diskette, CD-ROMs. portable hard disks. Major types of electronic publications useful to academic and research libraries are: databases; educational softwares; electronic textbooks, reference tools, knowledgebases, multimedia, clinical decision aids and practice management softwares, full texts (journals) and computer literacy and productivity softwares. The softwares can be public domain softwares, sharewares and commercially produced softwares. Selection criteria of softwares along with the names of software selection tools and sources are provided. Preparation of software for use i.e. testing and installation, shelving I storing, use instructions. technical processing and security are discussed. The author hopes that India can be one of the major producers and exporters of electronic publications in the world.Item Collection Development and Resource Sharing- A Reexamination(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Rajeswari, D.Taking into account the objectives and resources available. every library has to evolve a pragmatic and positive approach for developing its collection to meet the information needs of its users. The problems encounted by the libraries in India for this. however. are shrinking budgets. rare and out of print books. and lack of comprehensive and up-to-date tools for non-book materials. One has to cross many hurdles created by IT for developing the collection. A well framed Collection Development Policy (CDP) is of great help in guiding all these activities. The authors have described the means of use of Internet and Push Technology facilities for an effective collection development in the libraries by mentioning different search engines and URLs. Advantages and disadvantages of Internet and Push Technology are provided. Internet can be used for identifying different sources of information, can also be used from ordering to collection of information. The electronic media like CD-ROM, Online databases, electronic journals and newsletters, multimedia packages, Email and fax media, teletext and videotext etc. play significant roles in collection development activities in the academic libraries. The author describes how these electronic media can be accessed through the INTERNET and establish resource sharing facilities among the libraries and information centres of various countries in the world. The emphasis in the libraries have been shifted from collections of books and journals to the networked information services provided through modern technologies like CD-ROM networks and INTERNET. Selection of electronic sources for collection development activities is to be done based on certain criteria i.e. reputation of authors. publishers and products, context. format features, access methods, storage and licensing agreements. The author provides strategies for libraries to get into networks and resource sharing trends. The present era is more conducive to the resource sharing and use of financial resources effectively. The author provides the different connotations of the notion of customer care; the problems of neglecting the customers; the benefits of customer care and the behaviour skills one has to develop for the customer care in the organisation. The customer is the most important visitor to an organization. By serving the customer one is not doing any favour to him / her, the customer actually is doing a favour to the organization by giving an opportunity to do so.Item Cyberspace and Internet - Indian Context(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Singh, Gurdev; Gupta, VijaykumarCyberspace is not wires, cable and microwave, but it is an experience, in which computers and their contexts are available to users of any participating computers, anywhere in the world. It can be viewed under two main divisions: external cyberspace and internal cyberspace. External cyberspace is the vast collection of data and expertise available in the world outside, through electronic networks i.e. Internet and databases. Internet comprises thousands of networks lying allover the globe in different countries which can communicate with each other using Internet protocol. The authors describe the Internet connectivities in India through YSNL, DOT and DOE, by mentioning the types. Internet succeeded in' the U.S. because there is a systematic and sustained growth in interlinked networks of computers, whereas in India such interlink is not achieved so far.Item Data Base Management System in Library Usage - An Overview(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Mohanty, GeetaThe software that allows one or more persons to use, store, delete, modify and retrieve data that is stored in a database is a Data Base Management System (DBMS). Basic characteristics of DBMS are: Data Manipulation Language (DML), Data Definition Language (DDL), Data Base Manager. The author provides a schematic representation of a DBMS system and mentions its components i.e. entity set, attributes / keys, and relationship. The DBMS enables a user to create and update files, to select, retrieve and sort data and to generate reports. Therefore, the DBMS is a vital part of the information management in libraries.Item Databases in Indian Languages:Some Issues(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Raghavan, K.S.; Chandrakumar, V.Not much progress has been made in India regarding machine readable databases containing records of materials in Indian languages in the languages and scripts of the items. Major projects that have been initiated or completed include i) machine readable version of the National Bibliography of Literature, ii) Tamil collection of the Roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai and iii) collection of the library of the Deptt. of Indology of EFEO. Discussions regarding the use of Indian language scripts in the designing of language databases are made by citing the provisions of different codes and standards. Based on the experience gained in a project for the creation of multi-script database, the authors describe some issues related to multilingual databases, multilingual thesaurus, compatibility between different languages and provide few suggestions. There is a need for developing multilingual thesaurus in Indian languages to facilitate indexing and searching of materials available in Indian languages and scripts.Item DVD : The Storage Media(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Reddy, E. Rama; Rajan, N. VarathaDigital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) is a new optical storage technology having a large capacity CD with advanced multimedia support with atleast seven times the storage capacity of CD-ROM and can be manufactured for about the same price. DVD technology consists of five different formats: DVD- Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-ROM, DVD-R and DVDRAM. The authors mention about the storage capacity of different formats, their usefulness and compact, standardisation aspects and few limitations. "The nex.t generation of consumer and computer electronic products wm be built using DVD technology, replacing the VHS player, CD-ROM, CD-A, and CD-R devices.Item Electronic SDI : State of the Art at lIT, Kharagpur(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Jagajeevan, V.K.; Katna, A.K.The evolution of computer based matching of context profiles of information with interest profiles of users has helped in the transformation of the traditional SDl service to an electronic form in the central library of lIT, Kharagpur. Electronic SDl was introduced in 1997. Based on the Current Contents On Diskette (CCOO) database on three of the major thrust areas i.e. i) physics, chemistry, earth science ii) engineering, computing and technology, and iii) social, behavioural and earth sciences, the authors have described the methodology adopted in the Central Library. The problems faced and the future prospects are also mentioned. Besides opening new vistas for paperless correspondence, the electronic SDl also provides opportunity for the development of the expert database of faculty interest profiles.Item Exploitation of IT, Academic Libraries and Human Resources Development(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Sharma, P. L.IT involves computers, electronic medias, satellite. telecommunications and storage devices. It has made a deep impact on the academic libraries. The emphasis of these libraries is shifting from collection to access. Academic libraries in India still face several challenges due to the emergency of IT. The author lists all these challenges and deals in detail about one of the foremost challenges i.e. manpower development in the context of IT. The provision of raising facilities on IT in the library schools. inclusion in curriculum, short-term training facilities by other organizations. refresher courses. participation in workshops. seminars. conferences, conventions etc. are discussed. For their own survival and for the survival of the profession, the librarians have to play their role effectively in future. otherwise they will be replaced by a new group of professionals.Item Impact of Information System on Academic Libraries(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Choudhury, N.BThe overall increase in the management problems in the libraries makes the planning of the integrated information management system necessary in the libraries. To provide optional schedules to the proper functioning of the management systems, certain essential factors are to be considered. The author mentions about the Integrated National Information System in India, provides few suggestions inorder to achieve the objectives of the system and concludes that the investment on an integrated information unit is not a luxury but a necessity. SashikalaInformation Technology (IT) has radically changed the nature of work. and as a consequence the context and skill base of many jobs in a library require evaluation and redefinition. Keeping the libraries in institutions of higher learning. such as the IIT·Bombay in mind. the author has mentioned the approaches for developing new skills demanded by the introduction of IT in the libraries. The Il'I'-Bombay library staff have responded positively to the changing environment. maintaining a satisfactory balance with traditional printed based information sources and services. It is well recognised that there is a substantial educational role for the librarians in familiarizing users with the networked learning environment and it is already possible to carry out many of the activities associated with this role in cyberspace.Item Information Delivery of Full - Text Databases in Academic and Research Libraries using Hypermedia(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Shewale, Nanaji GopinathInformation contained in the libraries can be easily accessible, if all the books in the library can be ,,"tOTed in-a digital. format searchable by a computer. Information deliver is the proces of using computer to provide a user with access to specific information. The author mentions about the introduction of hypermedia in information delivery and its advantages. Special features in designing of full text databases and steps in developing the in-house hypermedia databases are briefly described. Even though it may not be the job of the library professionals to design and develop the hypermedia system for the information retrieval, but surely their ideas and experiences will play an important role as they have observed the user, studied the user psychology.
