Item Utkal University Library Services Towards Research Scholars : An Analysis(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Jena, PuspanjaliThe central library of the Utkal University. known as the Parija Library. has a good collection of books, journals, back volumes, palmleaf and paper manuscripts for use. To assess the quality of library services to its research scholars, the author has conducted an opinion survey of a sample of 23 research scholars with the help of a structured questionnaire. The findings of the survey deal with the convenience of working days of the library; use of the library by the scholars; library collections and helpfulness of the staff; usefulness of the library services. The scholars in general possessed a negative opinion towards the usefulness of the library services.Item LANs for Information Management in University Campuses(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Hasan, S.K.The INFLIBNET proposes to develop Wide Area as well as Local Area Networks to bring out the knowledge sharing among the universities in India. The author describes the configurations of typical Local Area Networks (LANs) for universities in conjunction with Wide area VSAT network. The topology of LAN can be based on Star, Bus and Ring topologies or their combinations. Details of the proposed configuration are provided and its implementation in two phases is suggested. The services of the INTERNET can be availed through shell system or SLIP system depending on the communication facilities. The author mentions several navigational tools with which the user can locate, browse, retrieve, transfer, and download information from several 'databases in the Internet. The universities may take the advantges of the various web-based information sources available in the Internet for their academic community. The sources are E-mail, E-journals, content pages of journals, pre-print services, technical reports, library catalogues and campus wide Information services (CWIS). Universities in India can provide information related to their activities, programmes etc. by creating their own home pages in the INTERNET.Item Collection Development in the Academic Libraries in the Context of Library Networks and Internet(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Selvi, G. ThamaraiElectronic publications and the networking technologies enable the academic libraries to overcome various information problems and to access and provide relevant information to the users. The electronic media like CD-ROM, Online databases, electronic journals and newsletters, multimedia packages, Email and fax media, teletext and videotext etc. play significant roles in collection development activities in the academic libraries. The author describes how these electronic media can be accessed through the INTERNET and establish resource sharing facilities among the libraries and information centres of various countries in the world. The emphasis in the libraries have been shifted from collections of books and journals to the networked information services provided through modern technologies like CD-ROM networks and INTERNET. For collection development activities, the libraries are required to adopt these technologies.Item Competency in Profession: A Tool to Achieve for Survival(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Shukla, K.H.; Nair, SureshIt is high time that the librarians make professional activities effective. and economic. To achieve this, certain skills and competencies are to be developed. The competencies can be professional and personal. The authors enumerate the characteristics that are required for these competencies. The competencies form the basis for the continued survival and growth of librarianship in the information age. Health care institutions are considering, and a few are making. large-scale commitments to information systems and services that will affect every aspect of their organizations function. Health science libraries have to adopt several of the Integrated Academic Information Management Systems (IAIMS) concepts and implement them at a hospital library level. The ideal situation in which the healthy professions can profit fully from the rationalization and management of knowledge in the medical school setting is one of reapproachment between the transmitters (teachers) and receivers (students) of information, whether medical or in any other subject.Item Information Management in Academic Libraries - Some Observations(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Prasad, H.N.Information management systems include all methods and procedures for collecting and processing information on a particular resource and formatting that data in a manner which is useful for the users. It should meet at least two requirements: to bring the information being looked for and to bring the required information fast. Computers and telecommunication technologies, as information management tools, have brought changes in the organization of information. Different aspects of information management, and future issues are discussed.Item Software Problems in Library Automation in India(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Francis, A.T.The systems and infrastructure used for information management should have international standards and compatibility. Few important agencies / institutions engaged in the propagation of standards in databases and related softwares are American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Standards Organisation (ISO), National Information Standards Organisation (NISO) and International Eletro Technical Committee (IETC). The author enumerates the important issues to be considered while selecting a library software along with the names of the major library softwares available. The author suggests for the establishment of a constant mechanism to make aware the library professional about the developments in the field, issuing of guidelines for standard library software, preparation of the list of standard softwares and evaluation of the software by a Software Evaluation Committee (SEC) at the national level.Item Collection Development and Organisation of Electronic Publications in Academic and Research Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Kittur, K.N.The availability of new technologies, high speed processing, improved disk space to store large volume of data at a lower price encouraged the growth of variety of publications in machine readable forms i.e. the electronic publications. The author discusses the types and selection of such publications available on floppy diskette, CD-ROMs. portable hard disks. Major types of electronic publications useful to academic and research libraries are: databases; educational softwares; electronic textbooks, reference tools, knowledgebases, multimedia, clinical decision aids and practice management softwares, full texts (journals) and computer literacy and productivity softwares. The softwares can be public domain softwares, sharewares and commercially produced softwares. Selection criteria of softwares along with the names of software selection tools and sources are provided. Preparation of software for use i.e. testing and installation, shelving I storing, use instructions. technical processing and security are discussed. The author hopes that India can be one of the major producers and exporters of electronic publications in the world.Item Periodical Service in Smt. Hansa Mehta Library, Baroda - A study on Service Evaluation(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Dash, RajitaPeriodicals are considered as the most important components in information communication process. Several problems related to space, finance, management. and circulation are faced by the libraries for a good periodical service to the users. The author has made an evaluative study on the quality of the periodical service of Smt. Hansa Mehta Library of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda by taking a sample of 53 respondents with a structured questionnaire. The study is limited to the periodicals in the field of Chemistry. The significant findings are: i) the periodicals are used for research and for guiding research scholars, ii) the degree of the benefits received from the service is low. iii) no significant relationship between the use of a particular periodical with its cost, iv) quality of the periodical service is relatively poor. The author provides few suggestions for the improvement of the periodical service in the libraryItem Impact of Information Technology on the Knowledge and Skill Base of Library Staff in lIT-Bombay: A Study of Management of Change(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Subbarao, V. SashikalaInformation Technology (IT) has radically changed the nature of work. and as a consequence the context and skill base of many jobs in a library require evaluation and redefinition. Keeping the libraries in institutions of higher learning. such as the IIT·Bombay in mind. the author has mentioned the approaches for developing new skills demanded by the introduction of IT in the libraries. The Il'I'-Bombay library staff have responded positively to the changing environment. maintaining a satisfactory balance with traditional printed based information sources and services. It is well recognised that there is a substantial educational role for the librarians in familiarizing users with the networked learning environment and it is already possible to carry out many of the activities associated with this role in cyberspace.Item Information Management : An Overview(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Ravichandra Rao, I.K.Information management is a process which involves converting the internal and external information of the institution into actionable knowledge with the help of technology. The role of librarian and information scientists in the information management environment is highlighted.Item User Education in University Libraries(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Kumbar, Mallinath; Biradar, B.S.User education is mainly concerned with providing guidance and instruction to the user in the proper use of library collection, individually or collectively, Difference between user education, orientation and initiation is mentioned and the need for user education in the libraries is emphasized. Objectives and methods of user education are provided. Though many institutions', universities and associations in India have organized seminars and conferences on the topic in the past, the necessary infrastructure and the innovation of suitable library instruction methods to suit the Indian conditions are yet to be developed. Therefore, it is the duty of the profession to develop such teaching aids which are suitable to meet the Indian requirements. RamaIn the recent years, the libraries need to focus their attention towards developing electronic documents selectively and access to electronic information sources using network facilities. Selection of electronic sources for collection development activities is to be done based on certain criteria i.e. reputation of authors. publishers and products, context. format features, access methods, storage and licensing agreements. The author provides strategies for libraries to get into networks and resource sharing trends. The present era is more conducive to the resource sharing and use of financial resources effectively. The concept of ownership need to be replaced with sharing the resources for mutual benefit.Item Awareness and Use of Digital Collection by Scientists(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Sahu, J.R.; Seth, M.K.; Ramesh, D.BBy considering the opinion of the scientists as the best means of evaluation of the collections of a library. the authors have conducted a survey of the opinion of the scientists of the Regional Research Laboratory. Bhubaneswar in order to find out the budget allocation on electronic publications, use of CD-ROM databases and preferences of computerised library services like on-line. CD-ROM and INTERNET services for their research purposes. For effective management of information. the library administration should take into consideration the opinion of the scientists and provide E-mail and INTERNET based services to the users. In order to have sharing of resources. the authors have suggested a network of libraries and information centres in the city of Bhubaneswar.Item Cyberspace and Internet - Indian Context(INFLIBNET Centre, 1998-03-04) Singh, Gurdev; Gupta, VijaykumarCyberspace is not wires, cable and microwave, but it is an experience, in which computers and their contexts are available to users of any participating computers, anywhere in the world. It can be viewed under two main divisions: external cyberspace and internal cyberspace. External cyberspace is the vast collection of data and expertise available in the world outside, through electronic networks i.e. Internet and databases. Internet comprises thousands of networks lying allover the globe in different countries which can communicate with each other using Internet protocol. The authors describe the Internet connectivities in India through YSNL, DOT and DOE, by mentioning the types. Internet succeeded in' the U.S. because there is a systematic and sustained growth in interlinked networks of computers, whereas in India such interlink is not achieved so far.Item CDS - ISIS for Library and Information Management . Some Developments(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Sandha, D.P.; Ramesh, D.B.; Dalai, B.K.CDS - ISIS package has helped many Library & Information professionals to create various in- house databases in India. Majority of the library & Information Centres in India use this package in comparision to other packages. The number of licensed users of CDS I ISIS are nearly 1400 at present. The authors have provided instances where CDS I ISIS is used as a tool for library computerisation particularly in housekeeping activities like ILL. FCE. eNC. IEEE and NEWS; cataloguing and indexing; circulation; acquisition. CAS & SOl. and its use in INTERNET. The package is more popular among the academic and research institutions in comparision to private industries. It helps the newcomers to learn various concepts and approaches to design in-house databases.Item Data Base Management System in Library Usage - An Overview(INFLIBNET Center, 1998-03-04) Mohanty, GeetaThe software that allows one or more persons to use, store, delete, modify and retrieve data that is stored in a database is a Data Base Management System (DBMS). Basic characteristics of DBMS are: Data Manipulation Language (DML), Data Definition Language (DDL), Data Base Manager. The author provides a schematic representation of a DBMS system and mentions its components i.e. entity set, attributes / keys, and relationship. The DBMS enables a user to create and update files, to select, retrieve and sort data and to generate reports. Therefore, the DBMS is a vital part of the information management in libraries.
