Abstract

Public libraries provide information to people in need, regardless of their community's social and financial status, age, or educational background. This paper assesses the role of public libraries in meeting the information needs of users and the requirements they face in the digital era, through a review of the literature and an analysis of public library services based on demographic information of the community. India has over 70,000 public libraries, but has faced numerous issues, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding to operate the libraries, and limited computer facilities. Digital India, the National Mission on Libraries, needs to offer a promising framework for a renaissance. Public libraries play a significant role in transforming the Indian knowledge society by 2047. Public libraries promote digital inclusion, lifelong learning, and information literacy programs, building a bridge to eradicate socio-economic divides and developing smart libraries and knowledge centres. This paper explores the strategic planning and policy frameworks that unlock the potential of public libraries in India
