- Item Analytical Study of Typographical Errors in OPACS and Corrective Measures(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Cherukodan, Surendran; Kumar, G Santhosh; Sheeja, N K; Humayoon, Kabir SThe present study is an attempt to highlight the problem of typographical errors in OPACS. The errors made while typing catalogue entries as well as importing bibliographical records from other libraries exist unnoticed by librarians resulting the non-retrieval of available records and affecting the quality of OPACs. This paper follows previous research on the topic mainly by Jeffrey Beall and Terry Ballard. The word “management” was chosen from the list of likely to be misspelled words identified by previous research. It was found that the word is wrongly entered in several forms in local, national and international OPACs justifying the observations of Ballard that typos occur in almost everywhere. Though there are lots of corrective measures proposed and are in use, the study asserts the fact that human effort is needed to get rid of the problem. The paper is also an invitation to the library professionals and system designers to construct a strategy to solve the issue.

- Item University Ontology for Choice Based Credit System(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Sirja, Jasmin; Kapadia, Kapadia; Pareek, Jyoti; Jhaveri, MaitriThe classical web is based on HTML which cannot be exploited by information retrieval techniques. Processing of information on web is mostly restricted to manual keyword searches which results in irrelevant information retrieval. This limitation can be overcome by a web architecture known as semantic web which is an intelligent and meaningful web proposed by Sir Tim Berner’s Lee. In his roadmap for semantic web, Ontology plays a pivotal role in information exchange, use and re-use of knowledge, shared and common understanding of a domain that can be communicated between people and across application systems. Ontology can be used to capture knowledge about any domain of interest with the objective of incorporating the machine-understandable data on the current human-readable web. In this document, we consider the education domain and demonstrate the development of a University Ontology using Protégé 4.2 Editor. Mysore University, Mysore, India has been taken as a case for the Ontology Development. This university has implemented Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).Various aspects like super class and sub class hierarchy and relations among them have been demonstrated. Sample execution of DL query and SPARQL query has been shown as a proof of concept.
- Item Securing the Clouds(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Ahmed, Mohammed Imtiaz; Ahmed, Mohammed Bakhtawar; Das, DebojitCloud computing is all the rage. “It’s become the phrase du jour,” says Gartner senior analyst Ben Pring [16]. While some consider it as a future derived technology that will not only help organisations to gain more profit but will also have a positive impact on the environment, others consider it as a past derived technology which is a refined version of Timesharing model from late 1960’s and nothing new. Whatever the words be, Cloud computing has gained a lot of attention in the recent years and has a wide scope in the IT industry and the big IT giants are all set to provide cloud services to the clients, as they require. Beside its wide possibilities, one threat that cloud faces is of its security issues. As in cloud computing, the data resides in the third party data centers, and the data is always vulnerable to attacks and changes. The changes or modification of data can be in from of a third party attack where a unauthorised person makes unwanted modification in the data or it can be a insider attack where an authorised person makes unauthorised changes in data. In this paper we identify some areas where cryptography can help a rapid adoption of cloud computing. Although secure storage has already captured the attention of many cloud providers, offering a higher level of protection for their customer’s data, we think that more advanced techniques such as searchable encryption will become popular in the near future, opening the doors of the Cloud to customers with higher security requirements.

- Item The Role of Librarians in National Development in Tanzania: Information Inclusion and Exclusion(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Tweve, Julius TunsajePublic libraries are inclusive institutions created for everyone to equally and freely access information for educational, social and cultural development; indeed that is the essence of inclusion. However, this is not true because defining and identifying user inclusion is a difficult task due to the wide range of factors that cause potential users exclusion from using public libraries. This is unfortunate, because the major function of a public library is to meet the information needs of all community members without discrimination. Previous research has shown that librarians usually draw two conclusions about exclusion factors: first, it is users’ personal preference when they do not use library services; and secondly, inadequate marketing of public library services to the citizenry. This is due to the fact that a public library as an inclusive institution is so ardently incorporated into the identity of public librarianship that questioning the social inclusiveness of libraries rarely occurs. This paper examines the issue of exclusion, attempts to define the inclusive society, and subsequently makes recommendation on how the librarians can use their professional capacity in service provision to combat the exclusion in the society in turn enhance development.

- Item Dominant Issues/Expectations Among E-Journal Users: A Study of User Experiences at University College of Engineering, Jawaharlal Nehru Technologcal University, Kakinada(INFLIBNET Centre, 2013-03-23) Naick, B R DoraswamyThe paper makes a critical attempt at analysing pertinent issues emanating from the e-journals usage perspective as experienced by final year students of B. Tech. as well as M. Tech. University College of Engineering, JNTU, Kakinada. A structured questionnaire throws up all the desired data out of a sample size of 100 students. A majority of the students rank high on the awareness level in relation to the availability of e-journals in the library. Interestingly, valuable inputs provided by library staff, peers, and faculty in general, is found as the biggest contributing factor to this higher level of awareness. Further, analysis puts the tag of ‘most favoured place’ to the central library as far as access to e-journals is concerned. Research requirements stand at the top of the e-journals’ search priorities among students. However, typical problems/snags, such as lack of uniform accessibility and abysmally sluggish downloading rate dampen the user spirits. Even though, widely perceived as a highly productive source of information by students, yet the students do not rate themselves as serious users of e-journals. They consider up-gradation of skills as a serious and urgent necessity. Besides, half of the students register satisfaction with the availability of e-journals in the library. However, a sizeable majority exudes optimism about the usefulness of users’ awareness programmes and look forward earnestly to such programmes.

- Item Publishing MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data as Linked Data With Provenance(INFLIBNET Centre3, 2013-03-23) Marjit, Ujjal; Sharma, Kumar; Biswas, UtpalPublishing Bibliographic data as Linked Data into the Web of Data provides information that are rich in semantics and syntax. Linked Data approach allows machine to analyse the data without human intervention. Data becomes reusable and publicly revealed into the web. Such data are always shareable among different data sources. Data that are published into the Web of Data can be increased in size. In spite of having meaningful and structured data into the web, their metadata or provenance are available at a minimum rate. In order to provide the utility and the glimpse of the data, the enquiry such as, what a dataset will contribute, who published it, their access mechanisms and licensing information are essential for the data consumers. In this paper, we present an approach for publishing MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic data as Linked Data with Provenance. We believe that the provenance information will help data consumers, mainly in library domains, to determine the quality & uniformity of the bibliographic information.
