Item Redesigning Library Services : Use of Library Automation(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Natarajan, MThis article deals with the library automation and the technological trends in recent years. It stresses about the managing the library activities and the need for library automation. The characteristics of paper library to automated library have been given in detail with the services and products. The enhancement of automated environment has been given in detail with the services offered under different headings like SDI, accession data transfer and sharing, the databanks, the role of reference librarian in automated environment, online catalogs and about information networks are explained in detail. The benefits of automation are explained and the LIS professionals should take the new environment as a challenge and face the user community by redesigning the services.Item Consortia for Journal Resources Sharing and Indian Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Chudamani, K SLibraries, mostly in the developed countries form such consortia’s for resource sharing. Recently, they have included access to electronic journals, e-books etc. The consortia’s are usually non-profit ventures formed by the association of libraries. In India also some consortia’s like INFLIBNET, DELNET etc. have been formed. But they do not go beyond sharing bibliographic databases of books and periodicals. In this paper the feasibility of consortia approach for journals sharing by Indian libraries is discussed in brief.Item The debate of Access versus Ownership and Library Consortia(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Kaur, NavjeetThe greatest upheaval in the library history that occurred after the invention of the Printing Press in the fifteenth century has been seen in the last two decades of the twentieth century due to a series of technological advancements. These breakthroughs in technology included the development of the Computer and the advent of the Internet. This led to the birth of the phrases "Access versus Ownership" and "Library Consortium". In this article both these phrases are discussed in detail. This paper is to explain the role, need and purpose of networking especially for university libraries. Indian initiatives and barriers to network development have been discussed in brief.Item Evaluation of Websites: A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Sasikala, CWhile searching for information the researcher will encounter many types of resources-books, articles and websites.But all of them may not be suitable for his purpose.The researcher needs to identify only relevant and authentic information which suits his purpose. The information source has to be evaluated in terms of coverage, scope ,intended users, timeliness, authority, objectivity, documentation etc. Though most of the strategies stated above for evaluating the information can be applied to any type of resource,the unfiltered, free-from nature of the web provides unique challenges in determining a website'appropriateness as an information source.Many guidelines and checklists are available on Net for evaluating Internet sources.This paper presents the findings of such a study made to evaluate selected websites to check the validity of information, coverage,currency,appropriateness, links and structure of the website keeping in view certain evaluation criteria.Findings reveal that variations exist among the websites in terms of their structure and content and it is also possible to find out validity of information available on Web by evaluating the resource we want to use.Item Consortia: Philippine Experience(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Ladlad, Jocelyn LMany libraries in other countries with very high financial capability are now into cooperative endeavor in on-line databases subscriptions. Consortia or inter-library cooperative may not be new in Developing countries like the Philippines but many activities in library cooperation still revolves around the basics such as bibliographic access, inter-library loan, cooperative acquisition, indexing, and cataloging. Just like in other countries, academic libraries and institutions are also the primary players in consortium undertakings in the country.Item Building Software for the Knowledge Map: A Case Study with Kmap-IISc(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Shubha, PInformation is the basic necessity for all organizations. New discoveries and inventions have lead to information explosion. It is difficult to avoid redundancy. Several sources and methods of tapping knowledge are available. Knowledge map is one such tool that acts as the pointer to experts in specific knowledge domains. The tool can best be utilized by librarians to identify the domain experts for referral services and to know who knows what in different domains and save the time of the user. Here is a small initiative to bring forward the web-based, database driven Knowledge Map: Kmap-IISc. This Knowledge Map would act as a pointer to experts in specific knowledge domains in Indian Institute of Science (IISc). It has the well-developed content management tool for addition, modification and deletion of expert’s profiles. Search and browse for Kmap-IISc facilitates to retrieve the results of experts working in specific knowledge domains.Item Role of Thesaurus in Modern Information Retrieval System(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Jalal, Samir Kumar; Biswas, Bidhan Chandra; Manna, SwapanInformation sources are growing enormously and the biggest access point of information today is the Internet. Search engines are the most popular information retrieval tools in the web today. Bur they retrieve more junk than pinpointed information. Can thesaurus be used in improving the quality of information retrieval, in this context ? Most of us are familiar with the concept of traditional thesaurus or dictionary of synonyms. But online thesaurus still remains a concept familiar to librarians, expert searchers and high-end system developers only. The access and maintenance of physical collection has become a great challenge as far as economic and ethical problems are concerned. The digital collection can easily be preserve on system and accessible to users on web without being tampered, but the rare and classic collection in physical form need to be preserved for future generation by overcoming the unethical means of losses. The MODROB / MHRD sponsored project helped to initiate the issue of security by installing the electronic security system to secure the esteemed collection and augment circulation activity. Library professionals are completely agree with this legal protection that creators of intellectual property should paid for it.Item In-house Library Software Development at IIT Kharagpur: Opportunities and Challenges(IMFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Jeevan, V K JThis paper describes the in-house software development initiative undertaken at the Central Library of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur for library automation and to replace the existing commercial package. A glimpse of the application of software development strategies for a library software development work is presented with the help of ER diagram, DFD, and schematic diagram, for the Current Journal module. Any software development effort pursues its challenges as the focal point to improve, enhance and substantiate the development effort. Some of the hidden and perceived challenges are listed out. As the software development phases up to testing only consume 40% of the effort, the library is gathering resources and support to execute 60% of the effort in maintaining the package as well as to generalize the package for its marketability.Item Librarian's Computer Awareness and Use of it Application in College Libraries of Yavatmal District (Maharashtra)(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Choukhande, Vaishali GInformation technology is a boon of present century. It is a combination of several technologies and systems, such as computer technology, telecommunication technology, micro-graphic technology and information retrieval technology. Application of IT is imperative for sustainable development in all spheres of human activities. IT, as a tool for harnessing information, should be introduced specially in libraries of higher learning institutes with long term vision and prospective planning at a time when the country has entered the new millennium. The challenges of 21 st century such as globalization, privatization and liberalization should not be neglected by higher education system. Hence the application of IT in higher education should consider these aspects. This paper discusses the librarian's computer awareness and application of IT in college libraries of Yavatmal district (Maharashtra). The author conducted a questionnaire survey of college libraries to find out the proportion of librarian's computer awareness and use of IT application in college libraries of Yavatmal district. The finding of this study was that out of 34 respondents 18 librarians were computer literate and aware of Information Technology. Only 8 colleges have computers in the libraries and 6 college libraries are automated. The results of this study suggest that UGC should provide financial help for the automation of college libraries of higher education and the librarians must get ready by keeping abreast of latest Information Technology in order to face the new challenge in information field.Item Data Mining and its use in Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Dhiman, Anil KumarData mining is defined as the automatic extraction of information from data warehouses, enabling an organization to improve its performance by getting new opportunities. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures “continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form”. Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. WAP has added a new dimension to the use of mobile phones through the introduction of new data-oriented mass-market services. WAP is the future of the wired LAN/MAN and it is gaining popularity due to its ease of use, simplicity and efficiency.
