Item Web Search Strategy/Behavior(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Sharma, Meenu“A library is a place where the right information is provided at right time, at right place and in a right personal way” by Dr. Ranganathan still holds true with the coming of new technology. The resources are shifting from print to electronic forms and the horizons of information age have expanded considerably than ever before, thanks to Internet and World wide web making the whole world a global village, thereby leading to such huge information maze which is beyond imagination. But, in order to make effective use of this mine of information, it becomes equally important to understand it and devise tools and techniques to utilize it effectively. Besides the analytical skills to identify the needs of users, knowledge of search tools has started becoming a speciality. Where search engines, subject’s guides and meta search engines help identify and locate the information, search logic helps to conceptualize the queries. However, the librarians who are excited to use wonderful web resources are digging out and mastering techniques to understand it’s behavior keeping in mind the fact that the value of a resource, and its ability to satisfy the information requirements, will vary for different audiences. However, as the Internet resources are dynamic and keep on changing, so resource evaluation has becomes more difficult than ever before leading to non-credibility of the results. This magnificent tool for librarians and informational professionals if properly understood and utilized can drastically change the frame of the today’s libraries and librarians building new relationships with the users, satisfying their information needs in a way they could never have anticipated.Item SUBJECT ACCESS IN OPAC INTERFACES IN TAMILNADU: A SURVEY(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Ramesh Babu, B; Tamizhchelvan, MThe design and development of OPACs are the recent development of libraries in India in general and Tamilnadu in particular. The data includes, the types and nature of the libraries, Information Technology application, interface used, range of access points provided, subject access facility and types of searches in OPACs. The major findings of the survey are: an emerging trend in the development of OPACs; use of a variety of commercial software, in-house developed software also used in a few libraries; coverage of OPACs limited to book collection only; and absence of standardized vocabulary control tools for subject access.Item Dealing with Complex Queries on Environment: A Comparison of The Performances of WWW Search Engines(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Thaty, Rajendra Kumar; Mukherjee, SukhenduWorld Wide Web (WWW or the Web) is perhaps the second most widely used application after electronic mail. The publicity and popularity WWW has gained is so great that many people equate WWW with the Internet. It has been attracting large number of users as well as information providers due to its user-friendly interface and hypermedia features. The size of WWW is not only huge it also has been increasing at a mind-boggling rate making it extremely difficult to retrieve information from it. In order to overcome this difficulty a large number of companies and institutions have developed various search aids such as catalogs, indexes, directories, and search engines for information retrieval. However, the huge number of these search aids and the differences in the search features used by them have confounded users. Are these web search engines equally good or do they differ greatly? Is it a fact that a particular search engine is good for one particular subject field and not so good for another? How do they differ from one another in performance? Is there a single Web search engine that out-performs all others in information retrieval? The current study attempts to seek answers to some of these questions.Item Development and Use of Web based Information Resources with Specific Reference to E-Books : A Case for S and T Libraries(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02)The present paper discusses the importance of web based Information resources with specific reference to e-books. The Traditional approach of Client Server model requires the data to be pooled at a central place and all clients access this central database for access to the information, which usually requires lot of manual efforts for data collection and maintenance of the database. With recent advancement and popularity of the Peer to Peer Network architecture, we have explored the possibility of the use of such type of architecture for Knowledge Management and Resource discovery. This will ensure timely updation of database and de-centralized mode of data archival.Item Application of Information Technology in University Libraries of Rajasthan: A Survey Report(INFLIBNEt Centre, 2003-02) Vyas, S DA survey was conducted in 12 state universities as well as deemed university institutions of Rajasthan to study the status of library automation. IIT Delhi Library was also sent a questionnaire to act as a role model to Rajasthan university libraries. The survey attempts to find out the following aspect of library automation: availability of reading material, financial support to library automation, hardware configuration in libraries, use of application software, initiation of library automation, status of house database preparation, user services, housekeeping operations, networking accessibility of libraries, problems in computerization and networking, assessment of computer applications and networking, and measurement of satisfaction regarding automation of information system. It concludes that the university libraries are interested in library automation. But INFLIBNET should speed up to attend to the grievances of SOUL users. INFLIBNET should also provide multilingual script to SOUL software to speed up database preparation. A consortium aims to assist member libraries In the authors view libraries in carrying out their mission of improving the end user's access to information resources. No two consortia are alike: they have different structures, histories, and specific goals. Working with consortia often can reduce a vendor's overhead. It provides member libraries with the information (including pricing) they need to make subscription decisions. They say that If a library consortium puts its Good Housekeeping seal of approval on a new e-resource and discusses it on consortial list servs and at consortial meetings, this helps create an interest and buzz about the e-resource among the member libraries." Handling negotiations and maintaining licenses for products "saves tremendous staff time in the libraries. Vendors should try to unders tand the unique qualities of the consortia with which they work. This article offers guidance directed mostly at vendors.Item Library Automation in Academic Libraries: Problems and Prospects(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Yadav, Radheshyam TInformation Technology has revolutionized the information handling activities in research and academic libraries in the country.
