Item Role of Digital Information Services in Corporate Libraries(INFLIBNET CENTER, 2007-12-07) Choughule, PradnyaPresent paper explains the role of digital information services in corporate libraries. The introduction to digital information has added a new dimension to information technology, which gave birth to new concept of digital information services. Corporate libraries have different users with different requirements. The methodology used for this paper is a literature survey and observation. It discusses how the effective and efficient use of new technologies helps us to improve the library’s image. Digital information services provide a wide array of services to assist members of the library with organising material or making them more widely available. Today the trend is quickly shifting towards computerisation. The task of information professionals is also very complicated and difficult to meet out the needs of the different users. This paper deals with concept of Federated searching that provide facility to search over different databases in one interface. The challenges of today’s searching and need of federated searching is also dealt. The paper also describes the process and hub as well as local database relationship along with point to point model and broker model architecture. The factors affecting the federated searching are also covered. Finally, it highlights the initiative taken by various Indian Organization towards the development of Digital Libray.Item OAI-PMH: A Tool for Metadata Harvesting and Federated Search(INFLIBNET Centre, 2007-12-07) Deka, DipenThis paper focuses on the importance of OAI-PMH in the aspect of accessibility to the digital repositories. The basic structure of OAI-PMH and its functional elements are given along with some existing metadata harvester services of India. The paper discusses about the PKP Harvester software and its users. The traditional library has now changed to the automated, digital, electronic, hybrid and at present to the borderless library and the conventional education too is been replaced by e-learning. The borderless library has a huge collection of information resources in electronic form which are accessible through the Internet, intranet and extranet. The online questionnaire was mailed to faculty members and research scholars of Tezpur University to determine the views and feeling on use of electronic journals. The survey examines the current use of electronics and print journals of Tezpur University Library and distinguished between respondents’ format preferences for those journals that were most important to their research and teaching. The web Search Engines has been regarded as the second most used web service after the popular Internet service, i.e., e-mail. Worldwide search markets shows that more than 750 million people - an estimated 95 percent of global Internet users conducted 61 billion cumulative searches in every month. In this paper it has been discussed the magnitude of Search Engine. It has been seen that the Search Engines keep track of all the searches that the user formulates. The paper discussed the possibility of invading privacy by the well-advanced Search Engines and possible leakage of personal information by these web search services. Retrieving searching and filtering massive uncontrolled database of the Web pages presents new challenges. The role of traditional libraries has been changed by the introduction of Internet access. So the users now have access to more information than before; that they must rely on search engine to retrieve and rank the results of their searching. Nowadays, electronic resources, networks and the World Wide Web represent a large portion of the library services. The librarians must manage staff, information in several supports, and technical activities to produce quality services. Quality services means resources and services, which satisfy users’ expectations and perceptions. It is very clear that librarians must use management tools to run the library services. These tools such as TQM, SERVQUAL, LibQUAL help them to assess services, to make decisions, to improve services and to achieve a better quality. The networked environment offers libraries’ challenges and opportunities in a number of areas including management, services, and collection development. The main objective of this paper is to describe and identify the issues meriting attention by the library professionals to gear up the library product and services so that user communities get satisfied coming to library.
