This paper throws light on the how the impact of e-books has geared to activate the research potentiality among researchers in the wake of advanced information and communication technology.Item Perspective of Digital Preservation: Need and Strategies in The Digital Age(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Singh, Kh Surachand; Sagolshem, Memori; Devi, Th PurnimaWhile digital technologies are enabling information to be created, manipulated, disseminated, located, and stored with increasing ease, preserving access to this information poses a significant challenge. Digital preservation involves the use of well-defined techniques to prevent the original artifact from deteriorating further and to perhaps even improve it to the point where it can be used again. It involves quite different methods, skills, and outcomes and can complement traditional preservation services, while simultaneously providing unique and dynamic new uses of information.Item UGC-INFONET : A Cross-Sectional view on Infrastructure(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-11-09) Sharma, S K; Parida, Ellora; K, Manoj KumarIndian education system is one of the largest and oldest education systems in the world. now in the Indian education system, universities form the base for success in higher education. Global competition in education system forced the Indian universities to change their curricula frequently and introduce new subjects, which impose a great demand to have good communication network infrastructure so that researchers, scholars and students can tap the most up-to-date information. To bring quality in higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken major initiative to modernise the university campuses with the state-of-the-art campus wide networks and has set up its own nationwide communication network named UGC-Infonet. This paper introduces a cross-sectional view of this initiative.Item Open Access Movement and Open Access Initiatives in India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Bist, Rajender Singh; Mohanty, V PatnaikOpen access is a new trend in scholarly communication which aims at providing free access to scholarly literature over the internet and has gained enormous momentum in the recent years. Although OA started and has grown from the pockets of regional initiatives in the developing countries, it is appealing to developing countries and is spreading throughout the world quickly facilitated by common technical standards and open source software. OA endeavors to reduce the price and permission barriers to scholarly communication and the scholarly literature are freely accessible now without any hindrance. The poor statistical show is attributed to the infrastructural dwarf in the universities. The nature of skewed usage pattern is found similar to other empirical studies suggesting that such methods may be espoused to form the parameters for determining the core collection of the electronic journal consortium. The paper briefly examines the existing subscription deals and suggested that resorting to alternative deals may strengthen collection and ultimately the usage pattern. The paper also maintains that higher per capita expenditure per students should be encouraged in the region to buildup infrastructure and come at par with the mainstream.Item Institutional Rrepositories: A Gateway for Knowledge Revolution(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Suleta, Thoudam; Sangeeta, KeishamThe emergence of computer communication technology has accelerated and offers great opportunities to fast, cost effective and efficient electronic communication. Physical condition of the manuscripts may be decayed due to factors such as climate, insects, acidified paper and old age. A core function of libraries is to maintain and preserve the decaying/ damaged manuscripts for the present as well as use of the future generation. The most significant development in the recent times is to digitize the fragile and rare documents for better access, storage, preservation and dissemination. Digitization is an important aspect of developing digital libraries as it opens up new avenues of access, use, research and preservation of valued information resources. This paper deals with the key issues of digitization at the Gandhi Smriti Library of LBSNAA, which have started digitizing its rare collection with the aim of providing the cost-effective technical solutions for efficient development and delivery of digital services to provide enhanced access to the Library’s collections and other documentary resources, and also to provide shared access to digital collections in cooperation with other institutions. Due to financial constraints most of the libraries’ procurement is limited. This proposal may be considered as a pilot project which could be extended to a greater dimension. It could be a role model which could be implemented initially in the libraries situated in the Capital and extended to other libraries of the State and North-East region as a whole. The proposal follows the same concept as the UGCINFONET e-journals consortium, but intended for affiliated college libraries.Item Role of Meta Search Engines in Web- based Information System: Fundamentals and Challenges(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-11-09) Das, Subarna KumarMeta search engines are powerful tools that search multiple search engines simultaneously. Unlike crawler-based search engines such as Google, AllTheWeb, AltaVista and others, meta search engines generally do not build and maintain their own web indexes. Instead, they use the indexes built by others, aggregating and often postprocessing results in unique ways. Meta search engines accept your query, and send it out to multiple search engines in parallel. They are often quite fast, using private “backdoor” servers made available by the search engines they query. They get this privileged status thanks to revenue sharing agreements. There are several advantages to using meta search engines, though they’re not always the most appropriate tool. The most obvious advantage is that you can get results from multiple search engines without having to visit each in turn. Apart from the time savings, there is some evidence that this gives your search a broader scope, since each individual search engine’s index differs from all others. Present paper attempts to highlights the role of meta search engine in web- based information retrievalItem Access to Web-based Community Information Services in North East India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Singh, Ch Ibohal; Devi, Th Madhuri; Devi, N Vidyavati; Singh, N GiridhariIn this paper an attempt is being made here to highlight the access to web-based community information services of the Community Information Centres (CICs) in North East India. A given digital library system should provide a coherent, consistent view of as many of these repositories as possible. From the user’s perspective, to the extent possible, there should appear to be a single digital library system. Users increasingly have access to various types of digital collections and information systems: personal information resources, workgroup and organizational information collections and collaboration environments, and more public digital libraries. The digital library system needs to extend smoothly from personal information resources, workgroup and organizational systems, and out to personal views of the content of more public digital libraries.Item Iinformation Handling in this E-Environment(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Pal, Rakesh KumarWe are living in an information world. This has come because of the unbelievable scientific and technological progress. So much information is being generated that we are confronted with information explosion, information pollution and exponential growth of information. This is causing a concern for the communication, distribution, availability, access and exploitation fronts of information, particularly so in science and technology. Management of information is thus drawing greater attention. Information is recognized as both national and international resource and it should be utilized for the socio-economic, scientific and technological progress of mankind as a whole. Information is the basic need of the human beings. The crucial role that information plays can be gauged from the vast areas of human activities in which it finds application that includes: growth of knowledge and wisdom, decision-making and management, research and development, manufacture and industry, education and training and academic writing. No one can deny the fact that information is a vital input in research, education and training etc more so in the current digital environment.Item Preservation of Digitized Information: New Challenges in the 21st Century(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Sur, SubrataDigital information preservation is always the thinking of library and information society.
