Item Automation in Library using RFID Technology(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Kotecha, Dhaval HLibraries are using cutting edge item level RFID technology in a closed loop system. Today, more and more libraries are adopting RFID as it streamlines workflow in the area of self service, book returns, shelf management and inventory. The potential benefits of using RFID in libraries from the perspective of its main stake holders- the organization; library staff and its patrons shall be highlighted. The paper discusses underline NCIP standards development, practical issues related to RFID working in a library environment and touch upon basic RFID issues concerning equipment maintenance & support; software compatibility; privacy and standardization. Real potential of RFID as a cross-institution platform for identification will be limited by use of proprietary RFID systems and hence recommends system integrators, vendors and libraries to adopt standards & follow best practices guidelines issued by NISO for use of RFID in Libraries.Item Open Archives Initiatives Protocols for Metadata Harvesting & Z39.50 in Library Software: A Model(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Singh, R K Joteen; Devi, Th. MadhuriThe objective of library networking is to promote resource sharing and free flow of information. Rapid technological changes have brought a drastic change in the resource sharing activities, specially Open Archives Initiatives (OAI) model enables the dissemination of research output at international, national and regional levels thus removing the restrictions placed by the traditional scientific model. Z39.50 protocol has provided a common platform which help to develop a Union catalogue. These new developments have made resource sharing more practical. In such a scenario, the best approach is to focus on how software will make it possible for the library to utilize networked resources for the maximum benefit of their users. The different types of available in the e-rosources under the UGC-INFONET in the Laksminath Bezbaroa (LNB) Library of the Dibrugarh University, the reasons behind the use of e-resources in the UGC-INFONET, the subjectwise use of the e-resources, and the problems in using the resources are discussed.Item Open Access, Open Source Archives, and Open Libraries Initiatives for Universal Access to Knowledge and Information :An Overview of Indian Initiatives(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Sinha, Manoj KumarThe present paper describes about the universal access to knowledge and information in the network and digital environment. It highlights the Open Access Declaration, Open Access Movement in India and aboard, Open Source Software for establishing Institutional Repositories and Digital Libraries for open access. Besides this it also highlights the recommendations of the Working Groups of National Knowledge Commission for Libraries and Open Access and Open Access Educational Resources. Some of the national level digital library initiatives and institutional repositories have also been listed for the benefit of the professionals. Initiatives taken by the INFLIBNET Centre , Ahmedabad and IISc , Bangalore and other institutions for creating Digital Libraries using Dspace has also been described. The present paper highlights the definition and historical development of digital library. It servers as a digital archive of the total research output created by the academic community of an institute. It makes freely accessible over the internet this intellectual output to all those who are interested in it, thereby promoting the knowledge development. TIFR too is therefore planning to build its Institutional Repository and as a prelude to this has undertaken a pilot project. In this digital age, everyone wants contents and to be successful information service providers. So, Information Center and Libraries needs to develop services in such a way so that the end users may manipulate the content, as per their requirements. Therefore, in the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the scholar world. IR provides a method for capturing and maintaining today’s electronic detritus so that tomorrow’s scholars can understand the thinking behind the published record. Again, for the standard IRs each and every institution should have to equip its library professionals so that they can be able to cope up with the ever-growing changes in this part. In view of the above, this paper tries to explore the contents of IRs and skill requirement for the implantations of the successful Institutional Repository. The paper also discusses the benefits, standard, sustainability & funding, legal considerations to some extents. In addition with this the paper also tries to present the Indian current scenario of the IR. Authors have also discussed about the software’s that are easily available to create and maintain in institutional repositories i.e. Open Source Software and Commercial Digital Repository Software. Due to the elasticity of budgets and hike of journals and books prices every year, keeping in view of user needs , libraries are forced to join a consortium.Item RSS Feeds and its Implementation at INFLIBNET(Inflibnet center, 2008-11-06) Kumar, RajeevRSS is a Web 2.0 technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favourite websites. In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website visitors had to ‘bookmark’ websites in their browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added. RSS has become a valuable technology for everything from casual web users to webmasters. According to a recent Yahoo survey only 12% of internet users are aware of RSS and a mere 4% have knowingly used RSS. The paper discusses about the different aspects of RSS such as meaning of RSS, evolution of RSS, how to create RSS and how to get / read RSS Feeds including basics of XML, which is the basic language for writing programs for RSS Feeds. At the end of this paper, details of the project about the INFLIBNET’s RSS Reader is also discussed.Item Building An Institutional Repository With DSpace(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Thakuria, JuliPaper deals with open source institutional repository software specially DSpace. After defining the terms, it discusses implementation of DSpace as an institutional repositories. DSpace has developed a model that allows users to use the system, submit and use content, and administrators can organize and configure the system. The Paper also discusses the necessity of DSpace Digital Library Software for Digital Library Initiatives and OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) in Open Archives Initiative.Item Preservation Of Archives: A Case Study Of Bangladesh National Archives(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Mezbah- ul-Islam, Muhammed; Akter, RowshonNow-a-days, while a mature system of preservation and conservation (PAC) technology and methodology exists world wide to achieve the systematic PAC of world’s cultural heritage, the PAC programs of Bangladesh National Archives (the custodian of Bangladesh Government’s records) have excluded the same provisions to sustain the usable life of it’s resources. In this circumstance, this study seeks to articulate the current PAC status of archives in Bangladesh National Archives, and examine the barriers that have hindered the development of fullfledged PAC program for them. Finally some recommendations have been put forward at the consideration of Bangladesh National Archives so that it can employ the minimum technologies for proper care of its resources and become gradually able to adopt latest technologies for the preservation of manual archives together with the development of a national digital repository of archives.Item Use And Awareness Of Net Resources Among Users And Professionals of Libraries In Manipur : An Analysis(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Singh, A Birajit; Devi, Th. Whereas, in the states like Manipur, the distant and remote corner of North East India, it is only available to few people with access to a Computer Network. The ability and facility to access web contents are very limited. Keeping this in view the present piece of study attempts to analyse the status in 48 (Forty eight) different types of libraries of Manipur. OA exists where there is free, immediate and unrestricted availability of digital content. In India poor access to international journals and the low visibility of research papers are the major problems facing Indian researchers. OA is viewed as a solution to remedy this problem.A number of workshops and training events were organized in India during this period, where a few thousand library and computer professionals received training in open source software for building open access repositories. The present paper aims to give the concept of Open Access and highlights some of the Open Access Journal initiatives in India.Open Access to information and knowledge not only enables digital inclusion of common citizens, particularly under privileged communities, but also bridges social divides.Item Prospects of Open Source Software in LIS Area of Assam(INFLIBNET Centre, 2008-11-06) Singh, Sanjay Kumar; Deka, Prasanta KumarThe choice of library management programme is constituted by social, economic and or political factors that result in selection of a system that is not suitable for the library requirements, characteristics and functions. Open Source Software or OSS has revolutionised the modus operandi of library software for library automation. OSS is quickly becoming a solution, owing to the freedom to copy, modify and distribute it and freedom from contracts as well as for greater opportunities for interoperability with other application. The paper mainly discusses about different OSS. It is a relatively new idea for library automation. People often advocate OSS because it is free. Some of the selected OSS is highlighted. Librarians are taking leadership roles in planning and building these repositories, fulfilling their roles as experts in collecting, describing, preserving, and providing stewardship for documents and digital information. The UNISWA Library has taken a step forward for building up an institutional repository of its own. The purpose of this paper is to document UNISWA Library experiences in developing its Institutional Repository. It will also describes how UNISWA Library planned to set up its institutional repository. The main aim is to create a permanent record of the institution’s scholarly output in digital format, and to make the Repository globally and openly accessible.
