However, despite technological advancements, an estimated 2.2 billion visually impaired persons (VIPs) worldwide encounter significant barriers in accessing necessary information for personal, academic, and professional development (WHO, 2023). VIPs require access to information for education, empowerment, and leading dignified lives, like sighted persons. Yet, due to inaccessible formats or prolonged waiting periods for accessible resources, VIPs often face challenges in accessing information promptly and reliably. So, this paper delves into the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Assistive Technology (AT) tools in academic libraries to address this issue by facilitating equitable access to information resources for VIPs. Through an exploration of AI integration benefits, features, and associated challenges, the paper aims to provide insights into leveraging AI-supported AT tools effectively to ensure universal access to information. Specifically, it examines various AI tools such as Be My Eyes, Seeing AI, Envision AI, TapTapSee, and Google Lookout, alongside strategies for their implementation in academic libraries to enhance accessibility for visually impaired users.Item Role of Mobile Information Services for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Libraries of Assam(INFLIBNET Centre Gandhinagar, 2024-09-19) Medhi, Purabi; Hangshing, JangkhohaoThe purpose of this research is to explore the use of mobile information services in libraries across Assam (India) to promote sustainable development goals. Results show professionals are cognizant of AI and its possible applications in libraries. They think artificial intelligence can help with decision-making, increase accessibility, and improve library activities. AI replacing human intellect in libraries, however, raises certain issues. It is important to consider factors including staff skills, finance, user privacy, and training related to AI deployment. Other important considerations are those of ethics, which include prejudice and discrimination, intellectual freedom, and transparency. Assam libraries are adopting a few current developments, such as virtual assistance, chat bots, voice recognition, image recognition, and OCR technology.Item An Analysis of Indigenous Knowledge Collection at Botanical Survey of India, Shillong(INFLIBNET Centre Gandhinagar, 2024-09-19) Deka, Banasri; Das, Jitu; Das, Hemanta KumarIndigenous knowledge is the information gathered by indigenous communities within a particular area over many years. The study has been confined to the indigenous knowledge collection of the Botanical Survey of India, Shillong only. The main objective of BSI is to survey and document traditional knowledge (Ethno-botany) associated with plants. Most of the information is available in the form of books and project reports as well as research papers by BSI scientists. Apart from these sources one medicinal plant database is there with information of 1915 species, 1082 samples of Indian textile and 3000 samples of dye patterns in digitised form. They have collections on various fields like medicine, art & culture, local drinks, agriculture etc. Those resources are collected from different states of India across various tribes. Lack of awareness is the main problem faced by the organisation in collecting indigenous knowledge documents, but they are trying to create awareness by organising different programs.Item Artificial Intelligence Tools to Enhance Scholarly Communication: An Exploration Based on A Systematic Review(INFLIBNET Centre Gandhinagar, 2024-09-19) Jamatia, Bikash; Gayan, Mithu, Anjali; Mahapatra, R, KArtificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance scholarly communication by simplifying procedures, giving better results, and opening fresh possibilities for research and accessibility of scholarly materials. So, there is a need to understand the basics of the information needed by the individual and community as well. But the term information need has become extremely complicated with the advent of IT, global economy and change in lifestyle in recent times. The term ‘information’ denotes a sensible statement, opinion, facts, concepts or associated ideas. It is usually communicated in an organized or formalized pattern thus it helps to increase the potential utility of information. On the other hand, ‘need’ can be defined as a situation that requires some course of action, which leads to good directed behavior. Here I have attempted to find the information needs of the Deori community which will help them to understand their information need pattern. Thus, it is possible to help them through community development and community appraisal.
