Abstract: The systems and infrastructure used for information management should have international standards and compatibility. Few important agencies / institutions engaged in the propagation of standards in databases and related softwares are American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Standards Organisation (ISO), National Information Standards Organisation (NISO) and International Eletro Technical Committee (IETC). The author enumerates the important issues to be considered while selecting a library software along with the names of the major library softwares available. The author suggests for the establishment of a constant mechanism to make aware the library professional about the developments in the field, issuing of guidelines for standard library software, preparation of the list of standard softwares and evaluation of the software by a Software Evaluation Committee (SEC) at the national level.
