Item Copyright Fails in Libraries in Digital Era(Inflibnet center, 2008-02-28) Khan, Mohammad Haroon; Makhdumi, GayasThe article addresses activities that involve some of the exclusive rights of copyright holders; the right to make copies, to display or perform copyright works, and in some cases to distribute works; and the copyright law’s exemptions from liability for fair use and for certain library copying. Copyright is legally complicated, controversial, subject to a number of misunderstandings and generally not fully understood even by the librarians whose daily tasks include administering it. To better understand the current status of copyright and its impact on libraries the notion of copyright is briefly outlines, along with what exactly copyright is. Libraries and academic institutions can also influence publishers to adjust their present copyright policies with regard to the reuse of published articles. The expectation is that there will be many digital libraries, most of which will have specialized collections and will be internet worked together in a way loosely resembling today’s Internet. Most digital library project planners are aware there are intellectual property issues that must be resolved in order to successfully deploy their libraries. Some proposals for digital library projects express intent to resolve intellectual property issues as part of the overall plan for the library.Item Encouraging Academic Honesty through Anti-plagiarism Software(2009-02-25) Vij, Rajeev; Soni, Navin Kumar; Makhdumi, GayasThis article aims to introduce LIS professionals to plagiarism, its types, some famous cases and the numerous library web sites devoted to this important issue. Plagiarism by students and researchers in academic and research institutions is an old but ever growing problem. The proliferation of paper mills, full text databases, and World Wide Web pages has made plagiarism a bigger problem in academia. The easy availability of electronic information through Internet creates a challenge for librarians, who must be well informed not only to detect and deter plagiarism, but also to educate their users about its ill effects. This article also enumerates reasons for increase in plagiarism cases, how to avoid plagiarism, do’s and don’ts of plagiarism, and finally prevention and punishment for plagiarism. Use of plagiarism detection tools can not only deter but also assist faculty to combat this form of academic dishonesty. In this article various anti-plagiarism tools have been enumerated and the advantages and disadvantages of using these automated texts matching software’s are discussed and analyzed in brief. The librarian’s role in informing masses about ill effect of plagiarism is also highlighted.Item Road Map to Build Global Info ATMs(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Makhdumi, Gayas; Sreenivasulu, VThis paper advocates and proposes the task of engineering and architecting Global Info ATMs. By applying and using this conceptual framework, the components, approaches, the process for building and development of comprehensive tools, technologies, techniques, support systems and possible methods of harnessing the concept of “Global Info ATMs” are discussed. The role of the new search engine-WebLib with Browser –Knowledge Navigator (KN) is put forth. The paper also outlines Global Info ATMs concept towards formation of Local/National/Global Digital Libraries Network.
