DLIST: Distributed Digital Management of the Scholarly Publication
(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-02-02) Singh, U N; Majumdar, Kamalendu
In present scenario publishers of freely available electronic journals have the potential for positively transforming the highly problematic economics of scholarly publishing. But actual use of electronic scholarly publications shows that they present serious utilization barriers to would-be readers. Practical awareness, indexing, and archiving in this new literature can overcome these barriers and is essential if such promising publications are to transform scholarly communication. DLIST (Digital Library for Information Science and Technology) can meet these needs by integrating electronic publications into existing information systems. Thus disintermediation of the scholarly publishing process will help the clientele of the low budget library in all respects.

HYPERCONVERGENCE USER SERVICES : A SERIOUS CHALLENGE AND WARNING TO LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL
(INFLIBNET Centre, 2001-03) Majumdar, Kamalendu; Panigrahi, P K
Library service is a busy, user-oriented activity, with a deep-rooted emphasis on means rather than ends, on tactics rather than strategy, on building collections rather than on the roles those collections play. This has been reflected by many renewed critics in their professional literature on practical and technical matters. In this paper the authors try to emphasise major changes that are likely to take place and a need for recognition regarding convergence between library, computing , and telecommunications services; of probable changes in the publishing world, and library management using new tools and techniques.

Web Information Services at lIT, Kharagpur
    (INFLIBNET Centre, 1999-02-20) Jeevan, V K J; Majumdar, Kamalendu
The Central Library at IIT Kharagpur is continuously exploring new IT tools and techniques for better information organization and services. The entire collection details (OPAC) are computerized and can be accessed from the Campus LANIERNET WANl Internet IWWW. The OPAC menu also keeps the Institute users informed about other details like campus academic activities, continuing education programmes and the staff directory. Now since these details are being accessed through the library website (cental library link of http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in) any person through a computer connected to the internet can access them. Besides OPAC, a CD-ROM network facilitating access to the earlier stand alone databases subscribed in the Electronic Library, is commissioned and this facility developed with distributed access in mind could also be accessed by any Internet machine, subject to high bandwidth connectivity and shared access arrangements/ copyright restrictions. The basic steps of designing web server for library applications and connectivity aspects of internet will be stressed upon. The paper will summarise the local developments and suggest an illustrative account for Indian libraries to migrate from computerised to Internet services and to emerge as workable digital libraries in the long run.

    WLAN: Application Towards M-library
(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Majumdar, Kamalendu; Singh, U N
Two technologies have changed people’s attitude to communication and information access in the last decade: the Internet and mobile communication. In one hand the classical internet architecture is visible. On the other hand organizations across the country are embracing wireless campus networks. The appeal is obvious- seamless, ubiquitous connectivity for users wherever they are locate. The emergence of 802.11 wireless standards have brought costs down and increased compatibility. Setting up a wireless network is trivial –most equipment works out of the box with little or no configuration. In this article the authors intend to describe a guide line of achieving an m-library with WML (Wireless Mark-up Language) in WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) in WLAN environment.
