    E-Books as A Tool for Scholarly Communication : Emerging Trends and Technologies

    The online revolution brought about by the world wide web accompanied by other advancements in the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is having a deep impact on the publishing industry. Readers are enjoying the fruits in the form of online journals and databases. Though the development in the area of e-books is not so rapid, yet people have started realizing its potential as an efficient & effective tool for knowledge storage and dissemination. More and more publishers are now coming up with ebook solutions for academic institutions and libraries too have started to develop collection development policies for e-books. The production, dissemination and consumption of e-books will increase substantially when certain issues regarding universal standard and copyright are resolved and we are in a better position to handle the e-books. Libraries will also look forward to more affordable and useful subscription policy for acquiring electronic books. At present there are several formats for e-books, many softwares available for e-book reading. Like Open Access journals, there are many e-books projects which offer free online books for reading and downloading which have been discussed in the present paper. The paper also discusses the commercial e-book publishers and the advantages of ebook subscription for academic libraries.

    Institutional Repositories : A Perspective for the Indian Universities

    The world is witnessing a sea change in the area of scholarly communication. Perhaps the control over scholarly communication has started a gradual shifting from commercial publishers to academic organizations and many author initiatives in the area of Open Access (OA). Open Access is perhaps opening up the major barriers that higher education institutes and libraries face specially when it comes to escalating journal prices and shrinking budgets. Institutional Repositories (IRs) are one of the two most powerful tool to empower and strengthen open access movement. Universities and other academic institutions of the developed countries are already reaping the rich benefits of institutional repositories. The technology is free, the software is available free of cost and the universities are also having the necessary infrastructure for implementing IRs at their premises. The only required link which is missing is the awareness and willingness. To make IRs a success awareness is also needed regarding advantages of self-archiving and publishers’ policies regarding self-archiving. It’s high time that Indian universities should take a decision and a strong commitment to develop IRs and convince the faculty members and research scholars to deposit papers in the digital archive. IRs may also contain learning objects in digital formats thus facilitating IT enabled pedagogy in the Indian universities.

    Use of Electronic Journals: A Case Study of Panjab University Library

    Over the last few years there has been a rapid rise in the electronic journals and this electronic delivery of journals has resulted this study. Users of the E-journals in the A.C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh were studied in this survey. Study highlights the level of the use of the available electronic journals. Experiences of faculty and students about various issues relating to electronic journals are highlighted. This article also discusses whether attitudes of the users change depending upon gender, age, access place and branch of study etc.
