    Bangalore University Academic Library Network (BALNET)

    Bangalore University has three constituent colleges and 440 Affiliated Colleges. The University has a Central Library at a sprawling campus called Jnana Bharati and a Branch library in the heart of the city at the Central College campus. All the 440 affiliated colleges have independent libraries. A number of these libraries have already computerized their housekeeping operations and have created bibliographical databases of their collections. BALNET will develop a resource sharing model by which all participating libraries can avail inter-library loan and document delivery services. In the proposed model the online union catalogue will students and faculty at the BU and any of the colleges to search for required monographs, serials, conference proceedings, articles. The authors has given an overview of proposed network model.

    Library Consortia and Collaborative Resource Sharing Models for Technical University Libraries in India

    The role of Librarian is continuously changing in the digital era. The format of libraries and the user expectations are also changing accordingly. Today we do not need the largely stacked libraries, but we need the libraries with large content base. The enormous growth of knowledge in each if the disciplines can never be owned by any individual library. The Technological University Libraries need to get equipped with a huge collection of content which can meet the diverse needs of engineering teachers, and students. Hence shared and collaborative resource sharing models are need of the day. Hence, this paper attempts to help the Technical Universities to setup their Library E-resource Consortia. The paper also covers other collaborative initiatives that a Technological University Library can initiate among its member Libraries.

Equally, the familiar portal interface is an option for searching databases that are unfamiliar to the users. Librarians bring their expertise with content, their knowledge of copyright, their commitment to customer service and their experience in creating customized web-based information delivery systems.

    Web Services Approach to Library Federated Search: Bangalore University Academic Library Network(Bal-Net) Initiative

    The objective of this project is to setup a co-operative framework and develop a central index system for accessing the collections of all Affiliated College Libraries of Bangalore University. This is ought to be achieved by applying a new approach for search and retrieval via SRU/W combined with MARC and Dublin core meta-data paradigm; harvest meta-data using Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Meta-data Harvesting. The project includes a server, client and portal, functionality partly running on Server and client browser resulting in a low implementation barrier, maximum scalability, and browser independence, as well as giving users control over the search interface and what collections to search.
