Item Building an Image Repository for Indian Cultural Heritage Materials – A Digital Library Approach(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Lalitha, P; Murthy, T A V; Khan, M T M; K, Manoj KumarDigitization has immense potential to store, preserve, disseminate and redistribute cultural materials, if the materials are captured in a bit stream format so as to enable to access through network for learning and understanding the history and culture of a civic society. Generally these materials are stored in museums or in libraries, but they can be spread over the globe and with the spread of the Internet, such contents can be made available to any corner of the world. Universal access implicitly assumes a largely unidirectional flow of information from the developed world to the developing world but the latter is often richer in traditional wisdom, crafts, and cultural artifacts: digital technologies have the potential to preserve that heritage and make it accessible. For developing an Image Repository for photographs of Ancient cultural material by using the advanced digital technology is a challenge, which include description of the photographs of Indian cultural Heritage Materials, Creating Metadata from the sample, Mapping the created metadata with Dublin Core, Developing an Image Repository System using Digital Library open source software etc. This paper is the result of the case study of such an attempt by the authors on exploring Open Source Digital Library Software, DSpace, for preserving the cultural heritage materials.Item Eelectronic Resource Management : Emerging Key Issues(Inflibnet centre, 2007-02-08) Singh, Ajay P; Khan, M T M; Chauhan, Suresh KEmergence of electronic information has changed modes of communication, information demands of users and information management system in the libraries. Innovation in the field of information and communication technology is boosting research and development activities all around the world. Earlier libraries were facing various problems for managing print documents rescued by the electronic resources. The consortia initiatives are mushrooming in the world rapidly. UGC-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium launched by the University Grants Commission (UGC) through Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is considered one of the best consortium models in the globe. The consortium is subscribing thousands of fulltext electronic journals and databases and making them available online to 120+ universities of the country. A notable usage of electronic resources has been observed in the first three years of operation of the consortium. But millions of articles downloaded by the member universities are not being re-managed for further use. While describing a framework for Indian Universities to go zbout with creating their own Institutional Repositories of Theses and Dissertations, the paper also high lighten the Formats, Software and copyright issues related to ETD archiving. It suggests DSpace as the software.Item Indian Academia on Copyright and IPR issues of Electronic Theses and Dissertations(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-02-02) Vijayakumar, J K; Khan, M T M; Murthy, T A VThe idea of E- Theses and Dissertations (ETD) is coming up in International scenario, which can be easily located, readily accessible and delivered over the web. This paper analyzing the opinions of selected Ph D Researchers and Guides from selected Indian Universities on Copyright and IPR issues related to ETDs. On the basis of the output, the paper suggests that Universities can start collecting e-format of theses, creating a digital archive for easy access. But in terms of access, still only a minimum majority is favoring online global access to Indian research. This may be because of Copy Right Issues, Chances of Plagiarism and Poor Quality in Research, which may be solved through policy frameworks and enhancing standards through national agencies like UGC at national level.Item Versatile World of Libraries in Digital Environment(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-11-09) Singh, A P; Khan, M T M; Chauhan, Suresh KInnovations in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have been changing all spheres of lives. Through this paper an attempt is being made to highlight the growth of libraries from private or personal library to digital and virtual library. We are in era of digital library but in true sense presently, hybrid libraries are dominating structure of libraries. Increasing information demands of the user insisting library professionals to keep virtual library as their target library, which is fixed to be complete with the development of ICT.
