Item Emerging Role of Z39.50 for Library Consortia in India(INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, 2004-02) Pandian, M Paul; Karisiddappa, C RInteroperability is a key issue for resource discovery in a library consortia environment. Interoperability is a concept that addresses the extend to which different types of computers, networks, operating systems and applications work together effectively to exchange information in a useful and meaningful manner. The technology enabled library consortia environment is heterogeneous, it hosts many different technologies, various data, multiple applications and other networked resources. There are several emerging standards, which have been developed to facilitate the interchange of data in a distributed environment. Such standards make it possible to perform seamless searches across several distributed resources, which have been implemented on different platforms. Z39.50 standard is becoming an important strategic tool for libraries and other information organizations. The use of Z39.50 can enhance resource sharing by providing a single interface to search multiple information resources. This paper discusses about the z39.50 standard, various components of z39.50 system and its applications in the library consortia environment.Item Internet in the changing Educational Scenario(INFLIBNET Centre, 2002-02) Karisiddappa, C RThis paper gives an overview of the changing educational scenario and the impact of Internet. Higher education is facing formidable challenges caused by changing student demographics. The changing IT environment and growing institutional demands with increased emphasis on new technologies and better training for employment for increased productivity makes the educational institutions to rethink and revise their programs. A brief account of the efforts made in India by IGNOU is mentioned. Emphasizes the need for Internet Technology mastering and concludes that the situation in India is not that attractive in using the Internet for education. Hopes that the IT Task Force may improve the situation in the near future.Item Library consortia for Academic Libraries in the E-Publishing Era(INFLIBNET Centre, 2002-02) Cholin, V S; Karisiddappa, C RAcademic libraries in India have been affected by an uncertain financial environment in which resource buying has been restricted, causing them to look at ways of extending their purchasing capabilities to compensate for reduced budgets. Technological developments, electronic publishing of scholarly journals, emerging of consortia, prizing models of the publishers gives new opportunities for libraries to provide instant access to information. Library consortium is the one of the emerging tool kit for libraries to survive in the e-publishing environment. An attempt has been made to identify the objectives, types, major issues and approach for co nsortia in Indian environment. The paper also highlights some of the important consortia arrangements at International level. The proposed models for academic libraries through different vendors / publisher has been discussed at the end.Item Push Technology for leveraging Current Awareness Services on World Wide Web: Opportunities for Cyber Librarian(INFLIBNET Centre, 2002-02) Nageswara Rao, K; Karisiddappa, C RWith growing interest in the Internet, more specifically, the World Wide Web, over the past few years and rapid growth in the number of users, the volume of information carried by the Internet has increased dramatically both in sheer size and diversity. In addition, vast amount of information on the Web is publicly available to users with uncontrolled, unstructured, and drastically changing nature. Internet search engines, meta-search engines and subject directories have contributed, to a certain extent, in finding information required by the user. However, it is a time consuming task because the user has to actively search relevant information. In the context of Internet and World Wide Web, keeping completely current with all latest information available is an impossible task. But, majority of services such as the Current Awareness Services, alert service table of contents of journals, new books, standards, patents, Web page monitors, E-Newsletter and daily news digests, etc. are based on the concept called push technology for delivering latest literature right to the end-user’s desktop through e-mail as soon as published. When full-fledged features of the push technology are utilized for providing current awareness service using Web resources, it will not only open new opportunities to the librarians but also to the end-users to keep up-to-date with latest literature. The article describes the opportunities open for the Cyber Librarian, advantages and down sides of push technology, push models, types of notifications and user interfaces, and active current awareness services on World Wide Web that are relevant to the library profession.Item Role of information Literacy In The Productive Use of Internet Information For Academic And Research Growth(INFLIBNET Center, 2006-02-02) Karisiddappa, C R; H C, KavitaThe Paper discusses the issues related to information literacy in l;the context of internetItem Study of Design and Development of an Integrated University Library System in the Digital Environment(INFLIBNET Centre, 2006-02-02) Cholin, V S; Karisiddappa, C RLibrary plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of higher degree of research in the university environment. Information technology has revolutionized the information handling activities in the academic libraries during the past few years. The Information Society demands that all the relevant technologies; that are involved in information processing, consolidation, repackaging and retrieval be merged so as to evolve an integrated system; capable of providing diversified services. In this direction the automation of individual university libraries is a first step, rather a pre-requisite for the development of such an integrated university library and information system. In this research study an attempt has been made to study the automation and networking of universities in India and discuss the need for an integrated information system and the components of integrated information system.Item Technology Issues for Library Consortia in India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2003-02) Pandian, M Paul; Karisiddappa, C RLibrary consortia in today’s digital age are quite different from that of library networks in yester years. The main reason is that the resources that are shared in today’s consortia environment are predominantly in electronic form such as electronic journals and databases. Hence the technology and associated tools to support sharing the electronic resources are also important components for the success of any library consortia. Technology to store, host, retrieve and deliver information resources keep changing. This paper looks at the technology requirements for modern library consortia and issues related to that both at the information providers and member libraries end. An ideal library consortia that is technology enabled is also presented.
