    Consortium of Plantation Crops Research Libraries For Resource Sharing – A Proposal Issues and Facts

    nformation explosion resulted from the rapid advances in all scientific fields has made it vital for all scientists to have rapid, easy access to scientific information. However, scientists in developing countries are hampered by the high cost of subscriptions to various journals. Since air-mail delivery is prohibitively expensive, the journals that are received come six to eight months after the publication date, hampering the work of scientists even further. Fortunately, the Internet has come to the rescue. Online journals are available immediately after publication anywhere in the world, with a few clicks of a mouse. Electronic subscriptions are normally cheaper than print subscriptions. Nevertheless, the costs to institutions are still extremely high, particularly in view of the fact that any institution has to subscribe to many journals to meet the varied needs of its scientists. In view of this urgent need, it is proposed that all institutions dedicated to research on plantation crops come together to form a consortium to subscribe to a core group of international journals, available online, that would benefit all members. This would follow the pattern of other consortia such as INDEST, INFONET and INFLIBNET. Experience gained in an initial experiment are focused.

    Digital Library Initiative in North East India With Special Reference to Tocklai Experimental Station : A Case Study

    Digitization has become the buzz word in the modern Library and Information Science/ Service [ LIS]. Objectives of digitization , issues related with digitization, India’s initiatives are discussed. Government of India’s projects, schemes presently available to libraries and individuals for preservation / conservation of rare and old books, documents and other such materials of cultural heritage are stated . Tocklai’s Digitization Project is discussed. Details of born digital documents and databases which are Open Source Resources [ OSR] for industrial researchers in plantation crops industry are discussed.

    Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Tea Science and Technology – Proposal for a Networked Repository of Tea ETDs

    Theses and dissertations are important knowledge resource created by graduate students in universities or institutes of higher learning. Due to lack of bibliographic control, and restricted access, these grey literature collect dust on shelves of libraries. Hence these are lost to prospective researchers and students to further their studies etc. Although many national and international efforts are being made to collect, collate and distribute theses and dissertations in many forms, none is comprehensive. The present trend is to prepare the theses in electronic form to facilitate easy online access to metadata, abstract and table of content or full text , the theses become OAIPMH compliant and can be searched on internet from anywhere. Depending upon access restrictions the theses can be harvested and stored in any institutional repositories. Indian scenario of theses and dissertations as knowledge resources, and maiden efforts by Tocklai Library in creation of Institutional Repository [IR] of all theses and dissertations in tea science and technology including other aspects are discussed. Proposes for a networked repository of TeaETDs among possible stakeholders in the plan.
