This paper describes the concept of digital libraries, its needs, characteristics and functions. The scope, methodology adopted for collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of data for this paper are concentrated to libraries of some leading colleges in Manipur. MadhuriThe objective of library networking is to promote resource sharing and free flow of information. Rapid technological changes have brought a drastic change in the resource sharing activities, specially Open Archives Initiatives (OAI) model enables the dissemination of research output at international, national and regional levels thus removing the restrictions placed by the traditional scientific model. Z39.50 protocol has provided a common platform which help to develop a Union catalogue. These new developments have made resource sharing more practical. In such a scenario, the best approach is to focus on how software will make it possible for the library to utilize networked resources for the maximum benefit of their users. This paper presents a design of library software, which is interoperability in nature and support networking and exploitation of web resources apart from automating library operations.Item Scientists In Digital Information Environment : A Study(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Singh, Ch. This purpose of information needs, the way to get the information, different access points, access to Internet and OPAC are covered. Preference on resources including digital sources has been given stress. Understanding the problems encountered by the scientist, suggestions have also been drawn from them to draw solutions.Item Scientists Views on Trends in Digital Library In Bangladeh and India(INFLIBNET Centre, 2005-11-10) Singh, Thoudam Shyam; Singh, Ch. Their views in respect of Bangladesh and India are analysed here to understand the scenario of Digital Library (DL) and its services in the two countries. Emphasis has been given on the technological requirements, DL Services rendered and the problems encountered. MadhuriThe internet has become the way of life in this information society. It beings the idea of wall less/boundary less open library. Whereas, in the states like Manipur, the distant and remote corner of North East India, it is only available to few people with access to a Computer Network. The ability and facility to access web contents are very limited. Keeping this in view the present piece of study attempts to analyse the status in 48 (Forty eight) different types of libraries of Manipur. Besides this, 321 (three hundred and twenty one) users of these libraries have also been taken into account to understand how far they can use and are aware of accessibility to internet.Item User Needs : A Study of Politicians of Manipur(INFLIBNET Center, 2004-11) Devi, N. Vidyavati; Singh, Ch. Ibohal; Devi, Th. MadhuriPoliticians constitute a particular group of users whose information need and information seeking behaviour is quite specific. In our paper an attempt is being made to ascertain the information needs of politicians who belong to different parties in Manipur. The channels and sources of information they use and their involvement in information activities are some of the parameters on which emphasis has been given. The barriers encountered by the politicians have also been chalked out to draw solutions.
