    Dublin Core (DC) Metadata: A Techno-Savvy Approach of Traditional Cataloguing

    The purpose of this paper is to describe about the Dublin Core Metadata elements, its significance, as the latest emerging International Standard of cataloguing of books, articles, videos and World Wide Web Resources. A candid discussion and general guideline is provided for the digital library professionals to manage electronic resources with the help of 16 DC metadata elements. This paper at least answers some primarily questions like “What are DC metadata elements?” “What are its characteristics?” “Why they are important and how it is becoming a techno-savvy approach of traditional cataloguing in current scenario?” The paper also examines the relationship between metadata and traditional cataloguing. The main steps for cataloging web resources using Sixteen Dublin Core Metadata elements are explained, and a worksheet is also provided to create DC metadata. DC metadata elements are valuable add-ons for digital library. The overview of Dublin core metadata cannot be complete in such small paper, therefore author limit herself to the most prominent technologies available. However, following the pointers given readers can easily find more information. The paper is of particular value for newcomers in this area.

    Need of Information Security In The 21st Centuary: With Special Emphasis to Computer Security

    We are living in a society dominated by information technology and in an era of information where huge amount of Information can be speedily processed and saved on easily accessible media. Information plays a really important part in decision making in an organization. For an organization a wrong decision can lead to drastic result. This is on reason why information is steadily acquiring a more central role in business. In the world of today information is becoming increasing important. Generally speaking the standard of information security has not kept pace with this development. For example, information that before was saved on a large amount of paper and physically difficult to steal can today be saved on a disk that can easily remove. In this article author has discussed, what information security is. Why it is needed in an organization of 21 century. The CIA Relationship of information security is discussed with diagram. The information security chain has twelve modules and eighty sub modules. The overview of information security cannot be complete in such small paper; therefore author delimits herself to the most prominent module computer security. In the last future and conclusion of information security are highlighted. Information Security of IIT Kanpur system is also consulted in some of the modules. The paper is of particular value for newcomers in this area.

    Search Techniques for Accessing CD-Rom Databases

    It is an indisputable fact that the computer information revolution has fundamentally changed library services across the nation for the past decades. Two recent advancements of information technologies, in particular, had significant impact on Library services. First, the introduction of CD-ROM technology has provided library users powerful access to large databases. Second, the creation of electronic networks has made online remote information access a reality. With the introduction of CD-ROM had a powerful impact on the storage and retrieval of information. CD-ROMs have proved particularly effective for storing bibliographical references. What are the CD-ROM Databases, why we use them and why we don’t want to use them in academic libraries are discussed briefly. Types of databases are explained by illustration. Search features commonly available in four selected CD-ROM databases such as keyword search, phrase search, Boolean search etc are discussed briefly. The selected CD-ROM databases are Ulrich’s on disc from Directory, Ei Compendex Bibliographic database, and Emerald full-text database of journal article. Some of the general issues related to the searching and retrieval of information from CD-ROM databases are briefly discussed. Some common points have been identified that the user must consider in order to quickly accessing information on CD-ROM databases in an effective way.

    Web Technologies For User Education

    Web technology is used to provide access to information both within and beyond the institution. In the future there will be greater emphasis on the delivery of information to support learning wherever curriculum programs are being taught, and wherever students are learning at institute or at home. The role of the library resource centre as a service facility will grow. Institutions have a crucial responsibility towards students to develop their aptitude in using the information potential of these information technologies critically and wisely. The paper is aimed at presenting the use of web technology in education. The problem is with organizing educational resources whereby individual learners will be able to access material according to their own leaner profile and needs. The Data for this paper is based on conceptual study including personal observation and interaction with students, library research referring to the important journals, periodicals, publications and research volumes and making use of the web. The authors in this paper have highlighted the various types of web technology useful for learners and educators. In Recommendations and Conclusions, the authors throw light on the need for a resource database for learners. Further research will entail the feasibility of the implementation of a resource-base using a data warehouse and data mining as the driving forces with the Internet/Web technology as the delivery mode.

As more libraries move towards providing their services in a digital environment, the improved access to remote library collections is making the use of electronic information resources more realistic and more attractive. The paper explores what are web based services, why it is necessary and why it is so popular among users, with their advantages and disadvantages. Different web based resources have been highlighted.
