Abstract: Analyse the role of knowledge representation, surrogate generation in the context of creation of a database for library collection. Identifies, the interdisciplinary nature of classification studies, surrogation processes for content description, the qualities stipulated to represent subjects and ideas and the basic research done in the area of knowledge representation. The need for formalisation and scientific approaches to representation process is emphasised. Collaborative developments in exchanges of knowledge-bases between general schemes for classification has been indicated. Direction for future research in representation systems for knowledge in library systems is indicated.
