Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the problem of how best to conceptualize information literacy (IL) in the higher education environment, in order to ensure that without combined efforts of teachers, librarians, administrators and users, the concept of digital divide is not easy to be handled by the academic community. This paper outlines the importance of developing IL in higher education for bridging the digital divide and the influence of the digital library environment. Further, it also describes the role of academic community in developing the IL and bridging the digital divide.
