Abstract: Developing preservation processes for a trusted digital repository will require the integration of new methods, policies, standards, and technologies. Digital repositories should be able to preserve electronic materials for periods at least comparable to existing preservation methods. Modern computing technology in general is barely fifty years old and few of us have seen or used digital objects that are more than ten years old. While traditional preservation practices are comparatively well-developed, lack of experience and lack of consensus raise some questions about how we should proceed with digital-based preservation processes. Can we preserve a digital object for at least one-hundred years? Can we answer questions such as "Is this object the digital original"? or "How old is this digital object"? What does it mean to be a trusted repository of digital materials? A basic premise of this article is that there are many technologies available today that will help us build trust in a digital preservation process and that these technologies can be readily integrated into an operational digital preservation framework Description: Digital Preservation URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/420 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Impact of library holdings in terms of physical and online access on the doctoral studies in Tezpur University have been studied based on citation appended to the PhD dissertations in four subjects clubbed under the School of Science & Technology. Two latest dissertations (degree awarded) from each four subjects have been taken for the study selected through systematic sampling method. Category wise distribution of the cited items viz. journals, books & monographs, conference proceedings, electronic sources, web citations and others have been studied. Category wise percentile distribution and availability of cited items in the parent library have been calculated for journals and books followed by preparation of rank list of journals for each four subjects studied. Some well known statistical and bibliometric parameters have been applied for the study. Suggestive approach to re-engineering of collection development policy of the university libraries have been lined up based on the findings. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/972 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The value of information is more appreciated than ever. Information collections are no longer geographically bound. Most of the libraries have had some degree of success with web based resources and electronic journals. In these instances e-resource will integrate easily into the infrastructure. There is growing awareness and use of e-resource by academics and students. In view of the above, the present paper tries to highlight the types of e-resources, general criteria for selection of e-resource, licensing factor relating the e-resource acquisition, argument in favour of collecting the e-resource, etc. Finally the paper would like to disclose the strategy and present state of e-resource collection in the Visva-Bharati Library. Abstract: This paper identifies and outlines the role & importance of various Institutional Repositories (IR) in India. The rapid advent use of IT has completely revolutionized the library systems and changed library services. In India open access movement is getting momentum in libraries to overcome the access barriers of scholarly publication. The institutional repositories were identified through a study of the literature, as well as internet searching and browsing. Each of the Institutional Repository software has a lot of features, unique facilities and excellent capabilities, which the users could explore and experiment. But in this paper we have tried to compare only, two Institutional Repository software i.e. Dspace & Eprints & its role in building Institutional Repositories along with the comparison the various aspects of D-space & E-print software, the various institutions using it in India for their Institutional Repository. Most of the Institutional Repositories (IR) in India use D-space and E-prints software. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/983 Files in this item: 1

Institutional Repositories Movement in India: Tips & Strategies for Success in the Challenging TimesVij, Rajeev; Soni, Navin Kumar (INFLIBNET Centre, February 18, 2010)[more][less]
Abstract: The paper highlights the institutional repositories (IRs) movement in India updated till Nov 2009. The paper attempts to identify and evaluate institutional repositories in India with special reference to initiatives taken by twelve DRDO laboratories/establishments including DESIDOC. This paper gives a comprehensive listing of workshops conducted in India to promote development of IRs and also lists institutional repositories developed in India, most of which are available in the public domain. The IRs are identified through a study of the literature, as well as internet searching and browsing. A questionnaire based survey followed by select telephonic interviews were conducted to examine the number of DRDO labs/estts, who have already hosted IRs, and those who intend to do so in the near future. Use of open source software, especially DSpace, is found to be most commonly used for the creation of IRs in India. The collection size in most of the IRs of India is in few hundred records only. IRs face a seemingly endless set of interrelated challenges. Most pertinent questions are: How can we attract content? And how can we integrate IRs into the Institutions landscape? The paper highlights the Indian initiatives in the field of IRs. It provides an overview of the 69 institutional repositories of Indian institutions in a range of subject disciplines. This article highlights software requirements for setting up IRs and the current trends in India. The paper conducts a literature review and questionnaire survey on IRs already established and those planned in near future among DRDO Labs/Estt and to incorporate it with the authors’ own experiences. The authors believe that institutional repositories will help in the sharing of institutional intellectual output and will increase article citations and the impact factors of Indian publications. The LIS professionals should play a proactive role in the growth of e-resources in institutional repositories to enable IRs to become sustainable in the future also. This paper explores some of the challenges and benefits to libraries operating an IR. Lastly, this paper will examine the future of IR’s as it relates to issues in sustainability and viability for institutional repositories. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/977 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article introduces Web 1.0 and its transformation into Web 2.0. It describes impact of Web 2.0 on Library 2.0. It compares Library 1.0 with Library 2.0. It suggests that recent thinking describing the changing Web as “Web 2.0” will have substantial implications for libraries, and recognizes that while these implications are kept very close to the history and mission of libraries, they still necessitate a new paradigm for librarianship. The paper points out different characteristics of Library 2.0. It states related technologies towards implementation of Library 2.0 services. It indicates principles Web 2.0 to the practice of librarianship, especially addressing how Web 2.0 technologies such as synchronous messaging and streaming media, blogs, wikis, social networks, tagging, RSS feeds, and mashups might intimate changes in library service URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/986 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Technological advancement has ushered a great change in the knowledge economic sector. The way people communicate, and in the process of information collection, organization and dissemination considered are to be crucial for providing the right information to the right customer (users) at the right time in a customizable, personalized, and collaborative way to the users which is imperative for the information professional. The role of the library is crucial in developing the novel thought to support the intellectual growth and success of the individuals and institutions that they serve in responding to these changes. The web 2.0 movement emerged as a response to the modern means for upgrading the libraries into more user-centered in the present library marketing scenario. In this paper, the author has vividly described marketing library services from user perspectives by applying social networking tools on the green road of marketing library and information services. The author has also rightly demarcated marketing strategy 2.0 plan for implementing social networking tools in the library and information services successfully. Abstract: In the present knowledge or information society, whatever we may call it, is dominated by the largest global network offered by Internet technology. Networking is the pre-requisite of the present society to be member of it. Therefore, to become the member of the library, network has become essential without any scope for any option or alternatives. Inadequacy of resources of even biggest library of the world is the main feature of any library or resource center. Therefore, augmentation of resources at the minimum cost is the aim not only by adding own resources but use resources of other libraries. The present professional challenge is that resources may not be available in own collection, but are to be made accessible wherever these are available. As such dependence on external resources is increasing day by day. We have to borrow what we don’t have or develop a common repository by collective efforts, which requires not only willingness to begin the process but mission to achieve the objectives. Keeping in view the above points in mind this paper briefly discuss about the need of the Guwahati academic library network and objectives of networking among the academic libraries in the Guwahati city. Further it enumerates issues involved in establishing such network, point out the constraints and finally the suggestion for the success of such networks.
