Abstract: Paper discusses the need for developing institutional repositories for bringing visibility to their research put and interoperability. States that the contributions of the institutions and their own researchers remain diffused and scattered in various sources hidden to the potential consumers of the institutions themselves, as well inaccessible to the contributors of the research papers. Paper raises certain issues associated with institutional repositories needing professional attention to resolve them. Abstract: This paper highlights into the importance of Open Access (OA) and Institutional repository initiatives to the system of scholarly communication. Abstract: The present paper describes about the universal access to knowledge and information in the network and digital environment. It highlights the Open Access Declaration, Open Access Movement in India and aboard, Open Source Software for establishing Institutional Repositories and Digital Libraries for open access. Besides this it also highlights the recommendations of the Working Groups of National Knowledge Commission for Libraries and Open Access and Open Access Educational Resources. Some of the national level digital library initiatives and institutional repositories have also been listed for the benefit of the professionals. Initiatives taken by the INFLIBNET Centre , Ahmedabad and IISc , Bangalore and other institutions for creating Digital Libraries using Dspace has also been described. The initiatives taken by the INFLIBNET Centre and IIT Bombay for initiating Electronic Theses and Dissertation Project has been described in brief. Abstract: The Open Access (OA) aims at removing restrictions that exist on the access to article and knowledge to the worldwide scholarly community, in particular to those in developing countries. Scientists in these countries still have difficulty in publishing their work due to the lack of access to the network, to their institutional economic difficulties or to the lack of awareness of available Open Access (OA) solutions. One hopes that Open Access (OA) will enhance educational and research opportunities and bring the world together. Abstract: The pivotal role of education as an instrument of social change - by altering the human perspective and transforming the traditional mindset of society is well recognized. The universalisation of education has become the top priority, especially for the developing countries. But the extension of quality education to remote and rural regions becomes a Herculean task for a large country like India with multi-lingual and multi-cultural population separated by vast geographical distances, and, in many instances, inaccessible terrain. Open Courseware (OCW) is part of a comparatively new educational movement in the line of Open Access (OA) and leading institutions and universities around the world are capitalizing it for the betterment of the society. OCW provides learners an opportunity to disseminate knowledge beyond the traditional classroom environment. The present study aims to spread the word of OCW and sensitize the teachers and learners about the tremendous potential of OCW in the context of education in India. Abstract: An Institutional Repository is an online locus for collecting, preserving, and disseminating — in digital form — the intellectual output of an institution, particularly a research institution.For a university, this would include materials such as research journal articles, before (preprints) and after (postprints) undergoing peer review, and digital versions of theses and dissertations, but it might also include other digital assets generated by normal academic life, such as administrative documents, course notes, or learning objects.
