Abstract: The enforcement of change happening in the knowledge creation and information management force to traditional library becomes a digital/ hybrid library (Yadav and Chidambaram, 2008). There are a number of university and institutional libraries, which are in the process of conversion of traditional library system into modern digital library systems. The credit for this movement is gone to Open Source Digital Library Software (OSDLS). Due to the OSDLS, digital library planning and development in practice has been increased in the world. The university library of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has also started digital library initiative and development of the Health Sciences Digital Library (HSDL) using open source Greenstone Digital Library Software (GSDL). The objective of this article is to give the analogy of road map for the plan and development of HSDL. It also narrates the digital library activities carried out in BFUHS university library. Abstract: The Institutional Repositories (IR) is a very powerful idea that can serve as an engine of change for any Institution. In this digital age, everyone wants contents and to be successful information service providers. So, Information Center and Libraries needs to develop services in such a way so that the end users may manipulate the content, as per their requirements. Therefore, in the present scenario, IR’s are become an indispensable component for information and knowledge sharing in the scholar world. IR provides a method for capturing and maintaining today’s electronic detritus so that tomorrow’s scholars can understand the thinking behind the published record. Again, for the standard IRs each and every institution should have to equip its library professionals so that they can be able to cope up with the ever-growing changes in this part. In view of the above, this paper tries to explore the contents of IRs and skill requirement for the implantations of the successful Institutional Repository. The paper also discusses the benefits, standard, sustainability & funding, legal considerations to some extents. In addition with this the paper also tries to present the Indian current scenario of the IR. Authors have also discussed about the software’s that are easily available to create and maintain in institutional repositories i.e. Open Source Software and Commercial Digital Repository Software. Further, brief about the current Indian scenario of IR and Failure of IR also discussed in brief. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1145 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Open Access (OA) initiative emerged as a revolutionary movement that promotes free access to scholarly publications over the Internet, removes the price and permission barriers and ensures the widest possible dissemination of research. OA exists where there is free, immediate and unrestricted availability of digital content. In India poor access to international journals and the low visibility of research papers are the major problems facing Indian researchers. OA is viewed as a solution to remedy this problem.A number of workshops and training events were organized in India during this period, where a few thousand library and computer professionals received training in open source software for building open access repositories. The present paper aims to give the concept of Open Access and highlights some of the Open Access Journal initiatives in India.Open Access to information and knowledge not only enables digital inclusion of common citizens, particularly under privileged communities, but also bridges social divides. Abstract: Open access journals are scholarly journals that are available to the reader “without financial or other barrier other than access to the internet itself.” Some are subsidized, and some require payment on behalf of the author. Subsidized journals are financed by an academic institution or a government information center; those requiring payment are typically financed by money made available to researchers for the purpose from a public or private funding agency, as part of a research grant. There have also been several modifications of open access journals that have considerably different natures: hybrid open access journals and delayed open access journals. Open access journals (sometimes called the “gold road to open access”) are one of the two general methods for providing open access. The other one (sometimes called the “green road”) is self-archiving in a repository. The publisher of an open Access journal is known as an open access publisher, and the process, open access publishing. The paper describes about the open access and open access journals. The benefits of the OAJ to researchers, for education, types of OAJ, the OAJ and the library, essential of OAJ, advantages and disadvantages of OAJ, current problems, criticism, history and links are discussed in this paper for the benefit of the research scholars. Abstract: The objective of library networking is to promote resource sharing and free flow of information. Rapid technological changes have brought a drastic change in the resource sharing activities, specially Open Archives Initiatives (OAI) model enables the dissemination of research output at international, national and regional levels thus removing the restrictions placed by the traditional scientific model. Z39.50 protocol has provided a common platform which help to develop a Union catalogue. These new developments have made resource sharing more practical. In such a scenario, the best approach is to focus on how software will make it possible for the library to utilize networked resources for the maximum benefit of their users. This paper presents a design of library software, which is interoperability in nature and support networking and exploitation of web resources apart from automating library operations.
