Abstract: The Web evolves rapidly. Day by day & WWW is currently experiencing a revolutionary growth due to its increasing participative community software applications. This paper highlights an emerging application development paradigm on the WWW, called mashup. Which uses latest generation of WWW tools and services enable web users to generate web applications that combine content from multiple sources, and provide them as unique services by adding values that suit their situational needs. This type of web applications is referred to as a Mashup. As blogs have enabled anyone to become a publisher, mashups stimulate web development by allowing anyone to combine existing data to develop single interactive web application. Current applications of mashups include tracking of events such as crime, hurricanes, earthquakes, meta-search integration of data and media feeds, interactive games, and as an organizer for web resources in a single interface. The implications of this emerging web integration and structuring paradigm remains yet to be explored fully. This paper describes mashups from a number of angles, highlighting current developments while providing sufficient illustrations to indicate its potential implications and their whole status in programmable Web.The role of Mashups on the web are presented, and existing & open emerging tools that assist in Mashup development are introduced. Abstract: Widespread use of Computer based products and services in libraries necessitated special training to its users. These compelled libraries to create tutorials for user education programmes. This case study describes the experience of Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management- Kerala in utilizing online tutorials for the user education programmes. Discusses about tutorials and different types of tutorials like offline and online tutorials. Explains applications of online tutorials in libraries, giving special importance to ‘Wink’, which is a free software for developing screen capture tutorials. Describes the features of ‘Wink’ and advantages of screen capture tutorials for libraries. Also gives an overview of how IIITMK library made use of online tutorials for providing user training on different web based information services, for providing e-learning for library staff, for library publicity and for training library professionals. Abstract: India, the second most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Economic reforms have transformed it into the second fastest growing large economy. It has one of the largest English speaking populations in the world. India offers one of the largest higher education systems in the world. It has around 300 universities with 15000 Colleges of Engineering, Medical, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Science and Management Education out of which nearly 10000 Ph.Ds are being awarded every year. Scholarly journals are considered to be the main carrier of quality scholarly knowledge. In majority of the cases public money is utilized in research projects. Scientists and scholars working on these projects produce articles containing research results. These are sent to scholarly journals for publication. These articles carrying nascent information are expected to generate new cycles of knowledge. However the traditional process of publishing system of print-only journals prevent easy and quick access to these articles. Providing open access to the research work will help the researchers, especially in the developing world, to have access to the research literature from across the world. The paper outlines the features of one of most popular open source software Open Journal Systems (OJS) for Open access journal publishing. More and more number of open access journals in India will bring a significant increase in the productivity and visibility of Indian scientific research. Abstract: This paper introduces the concepts of open access publishing and institutional repositories. Examples of such repositories are given. An overview is provided of projects being funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee within the UK in higher education institutions and information on how some of the outcomes of this work can be useful to those in other countries is provided. The progress of the Wales Repository Network in developing an integrated network of institutional repositories in Wales is described. Abstract: The importance of doctoral dissertations, the extend of public fund utilized for their production, need for their open access, concepts of Open Access and the arguments for and against it are discussed in detail. A brief historical outline of the attempts in India for digitizing and providing Open Acess to Doctoral Dissertations is provided. The development of the Open Access Digital Archives of Mahatma Gandhi University is examined as an opportunity for other implementers and developers to gain both technical and non-technical insight. Recommendations for establishing a national agency for ensuring OA to doctoral dissertations produced in Indian universities is provided. Discussion on Open Access Initiative and the creation of OA Archives of Dissertations at MGU can reveal to other intuitions in India that it is not a costly or difficult task as generally considered. Abstract: There are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems (CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. There are many CMS Like Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, Pligg, Plone, Post Nuke, Tweak, Zope etc., but this paper deals with a comparative analysis between Joomla and Drupal. The goal of this comparative study is to find the better CMS of the two according to various selected criteria. Abstract: When browsing information on large Web sites, users often receive too much irrelevant information. The WWW Information Collection, Collaging, and Programming (Wiccap) system lets ordinary users build personalized Web views, which let them see only the information they want — and in the way they prefer. It provides a set of GUI tools, including a mapping wizard, extraction agent, and presentation toolkit, that hide the internal representation from ordinary users, but let experienced users create more advanced mapping rules. Abstract: Metadata research drastically improved the resource discovery mechanism in accessing information from a large distributed environment. Even technological capabilities permit multiple metadata schemas for standardizing the structure and content of indexing information towards an efficient resource discovery. This paper presents the issues on standard metadata in order to pursue digital repositories and dynamic web pages. It proposes various means of harvesting metadata using optimum standards and protocols. It also enumerates inherent mechanisms for metadata harvesting in DSpace enabled repositories through various harvesting tools; and evaluates XML as current popular choice for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH) and exchange. System support to multiple metadata formats in DSpace has been discussed thoroughly. Finally it recognizes interoperability and extensibility functions that are being realized increasingly towards a long-term management and preservation of digital objects. However the glimpses of metadata production tools (newer & developed) could accelerate the digital repository initiatives with an increasing popularity of open access movement in real world.
