Abstract: There are numerous challenges in organising a digital library (DL) and successfully get to the user the articles he/she wants. Some of the problems have already been addressed and a few more are yet to be solved. Various standards have already been developed in storage and retrieval of digital data which are described here. They range from the standards that cover Portable Document Format files through the standards that govern international cataloguing efforts to standards for searching. Others are still under development and are described in the state in which they are currently. In conclusion, standards are necessary for every aspect of the digital library. New standards are being developed by the formal international and national standards bodies and one set up especially for the purpose such as COUNTER has been highlighted. Abstract: Metadata research drastically improved the resource discovery mechanism in accessing information from a large distributed environment. Even technological capabilities permit multiple metadata schemas for standardizing the structure and content of indexing information towards an efficient resource discovery. This paper presents the issues on standard metadata in order to pursue digital repositories and dynamic web pages. It proposes various means of harvesting metadata using optimum standards and protocols. It also enumerates inherent mechanisms for metadata harvesting in DSpace enabled repositories through various harvesting tools; and evaluates XML as current popular choice for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH) and exchange. System support to multiple metadata formats in DSpace has been discussed thoroughly. Finally it recognizes interoperability and extensibility functions that are being realized increasingly towards a long-term management and preservation of digital objects. However the glimpses of metadata production tools (newer & developed) could accelerate the digital repository initiatives with an increasing popularity of open access movement in real world. Abstract: The paper deals with the strategies, issues and challenges faced during the survey for the digital preservation of Mahayana Buddhist manuscripts of Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh, the abode of various colourful tribes is notable for its tribal history and cultural heritage. There are more than twenty-six major tribes and hundred sub tribes. Out of which, half a dozen of tribes profess living Buddhism- both Theravada and Mahayana forms. In the present scenario, it is estimated that only in Tawang monastery there are more than five thousand rare Buddhist manuscripts that contains knowledge on religion, philosophy, medicine, Lord Buddha’s original preaching’s etc. Besides there are at least five dozens of old Mahayana monasteries in Arunachal Pradesh where hundreds of Buddhist manuscripts are preserved written in Bodic script. The present paper is the project outcome, taken by the author with the help of National Mission for Manuscripts carries out the methodologies used in a long and effort-intensive process, the software used in this effort by the Mission, developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC), is Manus Granthavali. Abstract: The present study is an attempt to identify cancer institutes and associations’ web sites that provide free information useful in research and scientific endeavors. Thirty seven cancer web sites have been identified by using Google search engine for the study with the site domains .org, .edu, and .ac. This ensures the organization is not a commercial body. Availability of research & review articles, clinical trials, scientific reports, conferences proceedings, and other information of scientific importance in full text form are studied by visiting respective sites. The study reveals that though there are innumerable sites on cancer and information content for cancer patients as well as their relatives, the coverage of free full text scientific information for cancer scientific community is woefully inadequate. Even though the sites are developed and hosted by professional bodies, access to full text scientific literature / information for scientists and clinicians is restricted. Abstract: User is the key person in any library. The success of any library depends considerably on how best the system design is based on a close and accurate understanding of the users. The user is not only the important aspect but is also paradoxically a dynamic component of the library. The internet is a highly complex network that interconnects millions of computers around the world. In a medical college hospital campus, all the doctors and students are not able to come to the library to search the library resources, which are available; it may be print materials or online materials or non book materials. So, it is necessary to design/develop their own Intranet microsite or Campus network of the library, which could be connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) and make available to all the network computer terminals of the campus/hospital; this microsite should deliver/give all the facilities available in their library. The Manipal University Health Sciences Library also developed/designed and made access of library microsite for their users. Our study showed that 96.7% of respondents have awareness of Microsite developed by the library; 66.7% of the respondents were accessing the Internet resources through the library microsite and they are satisfied with the library resources. Abstract: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing has emerged as a popular model aiming at further utilizing Internet information and resources. Flooding is the basic method of searching in unstructured P2P networks; however, the blind flooding based search mechanism causes a large volume of unnecessary traffic, and greatly limits the performance of P2P systems. Our study shows that a large amount of this unwanted traffic is divinable and can be avoided while searching in P2P networks. In this paper, we aim at reducing the volume of unnecessary traffic, by proposing An Unnecessary Message Prediction based Searching mechanism (UMPS). UMPS is a pure distributed scheme, it is based on the distributed neighbor list where neighbors within two hops are stored in. UMPS cuts down unwanted traffic by terminating unnecessary flooding that has been predicted in advance, and the techniques related to distributed neighbor list are also discussed. Simulation results show that more than 60% unnecessary messages can be reduced by UMPS, and the query coverage range is retained at the same time, and more unwanted messages can be reduced if a peer has larger degree, therefore load balancing is achieved also. Abstract: The 90’s saw a substantial increase in the power and reach of the Internet. The beginning of this century has witnessed a sudden downfall in its potency as a commercial force. The problem lies not only in business and financing models but also website content. Tools such as computers, digital video cameras, cameras in mobile phones etc make it easy to create digital content and, at the same time, Internet platforms support sharing and publishing people’s own creations. Collaborative content, created with web2.0 technologies, is part of the social computing phenomenon. The key feature of collaborative content is that it is created, reviewed, refined, enhanced and shared by interactions and contributions of a number of people. This paper focuses on collaborative Web content development in two broad areas. The features are illustrated by a few relevant case studies. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1018 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: When browsing information on large Web sites, users often receive too much irrelevant information. The WWW Information Collection, Collaging, and Programming (Wiccap) system lets ordinary users build personalized Web views, which let them see only the information they want — and in the way they prefer. It provides a set of GUI tools, including a mapping wizard, extraction agent, and presentation toolkit, that hide the internal representation from ordinary users, but let experienced users create more advanced mapping rules. Wiccap encapsulates HTML- and language-specific details from the original Web site, facilitating the creation of personalized Personalization. Abstract: Information and documentation services available on the Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. In recent times, open source software has been seen as an increasingly mainstream part of the market. The field of content management system has seen particularly strong growth in open source solutions, perhaps in direct response to the very high prices that commercial content management system have historically demanded. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of combining classical information management techniques within organizations with the particular features of the digital environment. In this article the authors highlighted some of the most popular open source, free to download and use content management system tools. One can choose any of them for their website depending on their particular needs or organizational requirements. This article also highlights the different types, license, free or open source, database type, platforms, etc. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1028 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The WWW is the largest single information resource humanity. Unfortunately, despite its dependence on computers to operate at all, most of the information is only understandable by humans and not by computers. While computers can use the syntax of HTML documents to display in a web browser, Web computers can’t understand the content the semantics. Human beings are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as finding the information. However, a computer cannot accomplish the same tasks without human direction because web pages are designed to be read by public, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that public can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, sharing and combining information on the web. The paper emphasizes the semantic tools available. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1030 Files in this item: 1
