Abstract: This article attempts to trace the evolution of scholarly communication from the days of publication of Journal-des-scavans to the era of web 2.0. Explains the Open Access (OA) movement in brief. The views of Harnad (7) on OA are highlighted. The emergence of Open Access 2.0 is put in context. The authors also explain science 2.0 as the emerging practice in scientific knowledge sharing and scholarly communication. The positives and drawbacks of science 2.0 are discussed. Some of the science 2.0 concepts like OpenWetware, PLoS and other science 2.0 systems used in scientific research for communication as put forth by Hooker and Surridge are cited to indicate that science 2.0 is the future for scholarly communication. Abstract: The WWW is the largest single information resource humanity. Unfortunately, despite its dependence on computers to operate at all, most of the information is only understandable by humans and not by computers. While computers can use the syntax of HTML documents to display in a web browser, Web computers can’t understand the content the semantics. Human beings are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as finding the information. However, a computer cannot accomplish the same tasks without human direction because web pages are designed to be read by public, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that public can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, sharing and combining information on the web. Abstract: The present study indicates that 67.50% and 38.75% of college teachers use electronic information resources for the purpose of their class room teaching and research work. 88.75% of teachers use Internet as an electronic information resource. The study reveals that majority (78.75%) of the teachers opined that access to current information is only through electronic resources. 71.25% of respondents stated that too much information retrieved is one of the major hindrance in using electronic resources. Abstract: Scholarly communication is in turmoil. It is not clear how scholarly publishers will cope with change or if journals will even survive. That’s why it is important to provide some insight into scholarly publishing now and in the future. The key issues confronting scholarly publishing include open access (OA), peer review, institutional repositories, multiple versions of articles, increasing author awareness of copyright issues, archiving and preserving, and faster communication tools such as blogs, Web sites, RSS feeds, and podcasts. The newer communication tools speed up communication and bypass journals. In this environment, scholars may communicate in new ways and journals may have a different role from the past, but documents of record are still essential to the business. Abstract: This paper is a result of a study has been conducted at the University of Madras among the research scholars on the use and utilization of e-journals. This investigation applied a standard survey method to analyse the use and utilization of e-journals. This study restricted only to the research scholars of the University. Relevant literature on the e-journals use study has been reviewed. The study examine the category of same population, their computer, Internet access and use, and e-journals uses and usefulness have been analysed and summarized the findings. Abstract: LIS schools today face a greater challenge in updating their curriculum to accommodate the new technological innovations, necessitated by the market demands. Web 2.0 applications have not only transformed the nature of scholarly communication but is constantly reshaping the ways in which users search, find, access and utilize the information with the help of tools facilitated by open source software and user friendly web programming languages including AJAX. This preliminary survey shows how well the latest technologies are getting embedded into daily library services for the benefit of users and the feasibility of their coverage in LIS curriculum, with reference to Mumbai libraries. Practicing librarians are struggling everyday to keep themselves up-to-date with new Web 2.0 resources and utilities, to implement the same in their personal and professional work domains and hence expect the fresh graduates to be skilled with requisite technical competency to meet the challenges of the growing market demands. Abstract: This paper describes a live project carried out towards the development of a dynamic web site of University Institute of Information Technology, H.P. University, Shimla, using Joomla! an open source web content management software as a pilot project. The main objective of developing this pilot was to explore the versatility of an open source web Content Management Software as a precursor to handle web content of a full blown website of Himachal Pradesh University Shimla including its library and student services. The experience gained and power & versatility of the Joomla! explored to develop the dynamic web site of the institute are discussed in the paper as a case study particularly in the ease of installing and managing the web content both static and dynamic by non-technical man power in universities, libraries and administration.
