Abstract: The 90’s saw a substantial increase in the power and reach of the Internet. The beginning of this century has witnessed a sudden downfall in its potency as a commercial force. The problem lies not only in business and financing models but also website content. Tools such as computers, digital video cameras, cameras in mobile phones etc make it easy to create digital content and, at the same time, Internet platforms support sharing and publishing people’s own creations. Collaborative content, created with web2.0 technologies, is part of the social computing phenomenon. The key feature of collaborative content is that it is created, reviewed, refined, enhanced and shared by interactions and contributions of a number of people. This paper focuses on collaborative Web content development in two broad areas. The features are illustrated by a few relevant case studies. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1018 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Academic libraries have to provide very flexible services focused more on individualized and distant contact with their clients. To answer new demands they not only have to move their services and resources to the Web but also should consider the different cultural and educational backgrounds of library users. In this context this article tries to analyze and compare the contents and usability of six Indian Institute Management library Web sites and presents conclusions regarding the basic functions they perform. Library Web sites were evaluated according to a detailed checklist prepared specially for this purpose. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1023 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The growth and development in Information and Communication and Technology is multifaceted and turbulent. Rapid revolutionary advances have taken place in the field of computers and their application in libraries. Internet, high band width networks, explosive growth of web based information resources, sophisticated search engines to access information, high resolution capture devices and growing electronic publications have created the development of digital libraries. Digital Libraries build information resources in the Digital form .Digital materials cannot be said to be preserved if access is lost. The purpose of preservation is to maintain the ability to present the essential elements of authentic digital materials. Digital preservation must ensure that they can hold the collection for future generations .. Digital preservation will only happen if organizations and individuals accept responsibility for it. The starting point for action is a decision about responsibility. Everyone does not have to do everything; everything does not have to be done all at once. The present paper defines the concept of digital preservation , challenges, strategies and an Open Archival Information System ,a reference model for digital preservation. Abstract: ‘Electronic book’, a term coined by Van Dam of Brown University during the 1960s, is very popular today across the globe. The e-publishing phenomenon that began in the 1960s paved the way for the development of electronic versions of printed books which is known as e-Books. E-Book is nothing but a book in electronic form. We can download thousands of free e-Books from the Internet and nowadays, most of the world renowned Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) publishers provide perpetual access to the e-Books published by them under one time subscription basis. Abstract: Most scientists today have access to full-text e-journals. In most cases, this facility is provided right at the desktop. In this paper, we present a case study of full-text e-journal patterns amongst the scientists and engineers at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), a constituent of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The facility at NAL is provided right to the desktop through the NAL-CSIR-NISCAIR e-conglomerate. Today, National Institute of Science Communication and Information Research (NISCAIR) provides e-access to more than 4042 world-class e-journals to all S&T personnel of the CSIR fraternity. This CSIR-NISCAIR initiative allows any scientist in any CSIR Laboratory to access this electronic information to keep abreast of the latest technological developments in his area of specialization. The analysis of data on the full-text e-journal patterns is presented for the period 2005 to 2007. The major findings that we would like to highlight in this paper are: (a) the mean number (per-month) of full-text downloads for the above three years was found to be different through Kruskal Wallis test of ‘One Way Analysis of Variance’ at 1% level of significance and (b) Chi-Square test was applied to test whether there is independence between the years and the publishers. The calculated value of Chi- Square was found to be 510.6, which is highly significant. Hence we conclude that for the full-text downloads data, the years and the publishers are not independent. This Chi-Square test was carried out for only those publishers (4 in number) for which the data was available for all the three years (2005-2007). Abstract: This article aims to introduce LIS professionals to plagiarism, its types, some famous cases and the numerous library web sites devoted to this important issue. Plagiarism by students and researchers in academic and research institutions is an old but ever growing problem. The proliferation of paper mills, full text databases, and World Wide Web pages has made plagiarism a bigger problem in academia. The easy availability of electronic information through Internet creates a challenge for librarians, who must be well informed not only to detect and deter plagiarism, but also to educate their users about its ill effects. This article also enumerates reasons for increase in plagiarism cases, how to avoid plagiarism, do’s and don’ts of plagiarism, and finally prevention and punishment for plagiarism. Use of plagiarism detection tools can not only deter but also assist faculty to combat this form of academic dishonesty. In this article various anti-plagiarism tools have been enumerated and the advantages and disadvantages of using these automated texts matching software’s are discussed and analyzed in brief. The librarian’s role in informing masses about ill effect of plagiarism is also highlighted. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1068 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper reports the results of a survey conducted to know the collection of e-resources in Karnataka state university libraries. Attempts have been made to know the Internet facilities, procurement of CD-ROM databases and online resources, participation in consortium activities and e-resources accessible through such consortium activities in the university libraries. The paper traces the barriers in collection of e-resources in the university libraries. The university libraries under the study have insufficient number of Internet nodes, low bandwidth, poor collection of CDROM databases and online resources. The scholarly literature accessible under the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium is the only strength of these university libraries, as far as collection of eresources is concerned.] URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1064 Files in this item: 1
