Abstract: Much of what a man is pertains to his imagination. Indeed, imaginary are his hopes, his intentions, his ideas of himself. People dream of their lives and live on their dreams. The dividing line between living and dreaming is not always clear. Films are collective dream of society. They provide society with mythologies or patterns of behaviour. However, the mass appeal of the movies is a clear indication that most people today respond in one way or another to the dream like fantasies projected on the screen. It is necessary to grasp the significance of the preservation of movies in the life of the people. Preservation of cinema is no doubt the issue that haunts cinema preservationist, archivist librarians at the moment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/999 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information technologies have facilitated traditional reference process and made it more effective. Nowadays, most of library reference services are web-based. New version of the Web tilted Web 2.0. Some Web tools are blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, social networks, podcasting, tagging, mashups and Instant Massaging. These tools can be used in reference services in library 2.0. This article has proposed a model for reference services in 2.0 world called RS 2.0 model. This model includes direct and indirect reference services. Reference interview is done via Instant Massaging in RS 2.0. Four types of wikis used in RS 2.0. They are Ready Reference Wiki, Library Instruction Wiki, Reference Project Wiki and Collaborative Review Wiki. Refnews Blog, RefLibrarian Blog and RefLink Blog are some proposal blogs for RS 2.0. Social networks, podcasting, RSS and tagging are used in this model. In fact, RS 2.0 is a mashup. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1041 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper describes some recent projects and developments at the Library of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). To support and assist learning and research the Library has introduced new resource discovery services, the Beta Catalogue and Cross Searcher federated search engine. There is close collaboration between the Library and LSE Centre for Learning Technology to provide online information skills training via Moodle. The LASSIE project has investigated the use of social software in libraries. LSE Library staffs are gradually introducing social software into their work. The LSE Institutional Repository, LSE Research Online, is managed by a team of Library staff. Two projects, VERSIONS and VIF, have explored the issue of uncertainty around different versions of an academic paper. The NEEO project has developed an open access repository for the research output of European economists. The digitisation of print collections is at an early stage. Abstract: Web 2.0 technologies provide opportunities in various ways to add value to e-services to the world. This term Web 2.0 is widely used to cover a lot of different things especially online on the Internet. These push technologies open new challenges for Library applications too. These powerful e-services reflecting the 2.0 movement integrate dissimilar data to make it more focused for user needs, integrate data within specific user tasks, facilitate collaboration and team use of information, and allow creation of new information and value by users online. However, RSS is one of the easiest and most seamless ways to connect and be informed. RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is basically a format to deliver updated Web content. This paper describes the implementation of RSS 2.0 feed into an online information Gateway in a local Intranet environment thoroughly. Implementation of RSS feed provides news and information merely not static but also with a click. This paper highlights the features and technologies being used for implementation in a closed intranet environment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1052 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article attempts to trace the evolution of scholarly communication from the days of publication of Journal-des-scavans to the era of web 2.0. Explains the Open Access (OA) movement in brief. The views of Harnad (7) on OA are highlighted. The emergence of Open Access 2.0 is put in context. The authors also explain science 2.0 as the emerging practice in scientific knowledge sharing and scholarly communication. The positives and drawbacks of science 2.0 are discussed. Some of the science 2.0 concepts like OpenWetware, PLoS and other science 2.0 systems used in scientific research for communication as put forth by Hooker and Surridge are cited to indicate that science 2.0 is the future for scholarly communication. Abstract: The WWW is the largest single information resource humanity. Unfortunately, despite its dependence on computers to operate at all, most of the information is only understandable by humans and not by computers. While computers can use the syntax of HTML documents to display in a web browser, Web computers can’t understand the content the semantics. Human beings are capable of using the Web to carry out tasks such as finding the information. However, a computer cannot accomplish the same tasks without human direction because web pages are designed to be read by public, not machines. The semantic web is a vision of information that is understandable by computers, so that public can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, sharing and combining information on the web. The paper emphasizes the semantic tools available. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1030 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Scholarly communication is in turmoil. It is not clear how scholarly publishers will cope with change or if journals will even survive. That’s why it is important to provide some insight into scholarly publishing now and in the future. The key issues confronting scholarly publishing include open access (OA), peer review, institutional repositories, multiple versions of articles, increasing author awareness of copyright issues, archiving and preserving, and faster communication tools such as blogs, Web sites, RSS feeds, and podcasts. The newer communication tools speed up communication and bypass journals. In this environment, scholars may communicate in new ways and journals may have a different role from the past, but documents of record are still essential to the business. Abstract: LIS schools today face a greater challenge in updating their curriculum to accommodate the new technological innovations, necessitated by the market demands. Web 2.0 applications have not only transformed the nature of scholarly communication but is constantly reshaping the ways in which users search, find, access and utilize the information with the help of tools facilitated by open source software and user friendly web programming languages including AJAX. This preliminary survey shows how well the latest technologies are getting embedded into daily library services for the benefit of users and the feasibility of their coverage in LIS curriculum, with reference to Mumbai libraries. Practicing librarians are struggling everyday to keep themselves up-to-date with new Web 2.0 resources and utilities, to implement the same in their personal and professional work domains and hence expect the fresh graduates to be skilled with requisite technical competency to meet the challenges of the growing market demands. As for the LIS schools, bridging the gap between traditional librarianship and modern technologies will forever be a challenging issue. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1056 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper describes a live project carried out towards the development of a dynamic web site of University Institute of Information Technology, H.P. University, Shimla, using Joomla! an open source web content management software as a pilot project. The main objective of developing this pilot was to explore the versatility of an open source web Content Management Software as a precursor to handle web content of a full blown website of Himachal Pradesh University Shimla including its library and student services. The experience gained and power & versatility of the Joomla! explored to develop the dynamic web site of the institute are discussed in the paper as a case study particularly in the ease of installing and managing the web content both static and dynamic by non-technical man power in universities, libraries and administration. The hints and guidelines to undertake such a task are also provided. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1032 Files in this item: 1
