Abstract: E-print archives (electronic preprints) have become the first choice of many researchers for current research, breaking scientific discoveries, and keeping up with colleagues (and competitors) at other institutions. The citations being received to e-prints are evidences of the above stated importance of the archives. Impact Factor and Immediacy Index devised by Thomson Scientific Inc. (formerly Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia) are two parameters based on citations to evaluate traditional journals. These parameters for nearly 6000 scientific journals from all over the world are published yearly as Journal Citation Reports (JCR). As a case study, the present work has made an endeavour to calculate impact factors and immediacy indices of archives uploaded in the Physics categories of arXiv.org of Cornell University, USA by treating them as individual journals. The Physics e-prints uploaded in arXiv.org are classified into twelve sub-categories: viz. AstroPhysics (astro-ph); Condensed Matter (cond-mat); General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology (gr-qc); High Energy Physics - Experiment (hep-ex); High Energy Physics - Lattice (hep-lat); High Energy Physics - Phenomenology (hep-ph); High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th); Mathematical Physics (math-ph); Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex); Nuclear Theory (nucl-th); General Physics (Physics); and Quantum Physics (quant-ph). Calculated impact factors and immediacy indices reveal that Nuclear Experiment has made good impact among the categories and followed by High-Energy Physics classes of arXiv.org (High Energy Physics – Theory; High Energy Physics – Lattice; High Energy Physics – Experiment; and High Energy Physics - Phenomenology). The citation trackers like Scopus and web-tools like ‘Google-Scholar’, ‘Citebase’, ‘Citeseer’ etc. will further strengthen the concluded impact of the archives. Abstract: There is a large quantity of subscribed e-resources in our libraries and they contain quality information, though expensive. In spite of advantages in terms of access and search capabilities, they are underused. Systematic plan has to be in place for their promotion of use. While a good ICT infrastructure is a prerequisite, it alone will not do. Proactive strategies are required and these need to be adopted imaginatively. Access to e-resources need to be made easier for both on campus and off campus users. As a priority, active users need to be identified and they need to be converted to heavy users of eresources. Secondly, non users be converted to active users Various methods have to be tried in order to grab the attention of the users towards the e-resources. User training will increase the confidence level of the users. Traditional awareness methods include : Personal visits, user training, brochures, posters and displays. Newer technologies from the Web 2.0 such as RSS alert service, Blogs, Wikis and Facebook make the interaction with the library not only interesting but also add more value. Finally, the effectiveness of various promotional strategies need to be measured by monitoring the usage and user feedback. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1090 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The present study is an attempt to identify cancer institutes and associations’ web sites that provide free information useful in research and scientific endeavors. Thirty seven cancer web sites have been identified by using Google search engine for the study with the site domains .org, .edu, and .ac. This ensures the organization is not a commercial body. Availability of research & review articles, clinical trials, scientific reports, conferences proceedings, and other information of scientific importance in full text form are studied by visiting respective sites. The study reveals that though there are innumerable sites on cancer and information content for cancer patients as well as their relatives, the coverage of free full text scientific information for cancer scientific community is woefully inadequate. Even though the sites are developed and hosted by professional bodies, access to full text scientific literature / information for scientists and clinicians is restricted. Abstract: Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing has emerged as a popular model aiming at further utilizing Internet information and resources. Flooding is the basic method of searching in unstructured P2P networks; however, the blind flooding based search mechanism causes a large volume of unnecessary traffic, and greatly limits the performance of P2P systems. Our study shows that a large amount of this unwanted traffic is divinable and can be avoided while searching in P2P networks. In this paper, we aim at reducing the volume of unnecessary traffic, by proposing An Unnecessary Message Prediction based Searching mechanism (UMPS). UMPS is a pure distributed scheme, it is based on the distributed neighbor list where neighbors within two hops are stored in. UMPS cuts down unwanted traffic by terminating unnecessary flooding that has been predicted in advance, and the techniques related to distributed neighbor list are also discussed. Simulation results show that more than 60% unnecessary messages can be reduced by UMPS, and the query coverage range is retained at the same time, and more unwanted messages can be reduced if a peer has larger degree, therefore load balancing is achieved also. Abstract: The World Wide Web is relying on many technologies to build rich interfaces and applications which enable enhanced interactions and social networking. With the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, it has become easy to seek information interactively and making appointments effectively. Whilst the underlying technologies in Web 2.0 applications like JavaScript, XML, ASP.Net, PHP/Perl, MySQL, etc., are not new, the creative combination of these technologies gave the web a live and full interactivity for dealing with data. AJAX applications have received wide-spread attention as a new way to develop highly interactive web applications. Mashups enables web users to generate web applications that combine content from multiple sources, and provide them as unique services that suit their information needs. This paper explores the interactive web technologies such as AJAX, Mashups, Web Feed, RSS, Atom, Enterprise 2.0 and Web 3.0. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1049 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Computer networks are a crucial part of organizations. It is one of the fastest growing technological areas and brings benefits virtually to every country in the world. With the interconnection of network to the Internet, the world has truly become a global village where we depend more, on digital materials. So in the present century all digital works need protection because they can be easily copied. For that reason DRM technology has taken place, which is not a single technology or not a single philosophy. It refers to a broad range of technologies and standards. DRM is neither thin nor thick copy right. DRM is potentially a planned technique for absolute protection of works. Thus the present article is intended to highlight few technological aspects of DRM which are essential in the library profession. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1076 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: User is the key person in any library. The success of any library depends considerably on how best the system design is based on a close and accurate understanding of the users. The user is not only the important aspect but is also paradoxically a dynamic component of the library. The internet is a highly complex network that interconnects millions of computers around the world. In a medical college hospital campus, all the doctors and students are not able to come to the library to search the library resources, which are available; it may be print materials or online materials or non book materials. So, it is necessary to design/develop their own Intranet microsite or Campus network of the library, which could be connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) and make available to all the network computer terminals of the campus/hospital; this microsite should deliver/give all the facilities available in their library. The Manipal University Health Sciences Library also developed/designed and made access of library microsite for their users. Our study showed that 96.7% of respondents have awareness of Microsite developed by the library; 66.7% of the respondents were accessing the Internet resources through the library microsite and they are satisfied with the library resources. Abstract: The Web evolves rapidly. Day by day & WWW is currently experiencing a revolutionary growth due to its increasing participative community software applications. This paper highlights an emerging application development paradigm on the WWW, called mashup. Which uses latest generation of WWW tools and services enable web users to generate web applications that combine content from multiple sources, and provide them as unique services by adding values that suit their situational needs. This type of web applications is referred to as a Mashup. As blogs have enabled anyone to become a publisher, mashups stimulate web development by allowing anyone to combine existing data to develop single interactive web application. Current applications of mashups include tracking of events such as crime, hurricanes, earthquakes, meta-search integration of data and media feeds, interactive games, and as an organizer for web resources in a single interface. The implications of this emerging web integration and structuring paradigm remains yet to be explored fully. This paper describes mashups from a number of angles, highlighting current developments while providing sufficient illustrations to indicate its potential implications and their whole status in programmable Web.The role of Mashups on the web are presented, and existing & open emerging tools that assist in Mashup development are introduced. Abstract: India, the second most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Economic reforms have transformed it into the second fastest growing large economy. It has one of the largest English speaking populations in the world. India offers one of the largest higher education systems in the world. It has around 300 universities with 15000 Colleges of Engineering, Medical, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Science and Management Education out of which nearly 10000 Ph.Ds are being awarded every year. Scholarly journals are considered to be the main carrier of quality scholarly knowledge. In majority of the cases public money is utilized in research projects. Scientists and scholars working on these projects produce articles containing research results. These are sent to scholarly journals for publication. These articles carrying nascent information are expected to generate new cycles of knowledge. However the traditional process of publishing system of print-only journals prevent easy and quick access to these articles. Providing open access to the research work will help the researchers, especially in the developing world, to have access to the research literature from across the world. The paper outlines the features of one of most popular open source software Open Journal Systems (OJS) for Open access journal publishing. More and more number of open access journals in India will bring a significant increase in the productivity and visibility of Indian scientific research.
