Abstract: In educational and research institutions, the quantity of digital content created is huge, and libraries at these institutions have a liability to bring this digital material under guardian control in order to manage and preserve it over time. These all have presented challenges and problems to libraries because of the need for special equipment to display items in these formats, obsolescence of this equipment and/or the formats, and the need to preserve the information contained on sometimes fragile storage media. Now the Libraries are working with the DSpace, Greenstone etc (opensource digital repository platform) to explore the problem of capturing research and teaching material in any digital format and preserving it over time. It is a daunting task with few confirmed models, requiring new technology, policies, procedures, core staff competencies, and cost models Problems are not ending; now burning problem is what we should be selected for Preservation for future as this task is not trouble-free. Today the problem of harvesting material on the web and in information centres for preservation and search is a major concern. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1274 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper presents the idea of Web 2.0, represents a significant paradigm shift in the way we view library services. It’s about a seamless user experience, where usability, interoperability, and flexibility of library systems are key features to future prospects. The library can build community (both online and physical), via using web 2.0 technologies (instant messaging, screen casting, blogs, wikis, etc.). It allows user participation through writing reviews and tagging in the catalog and making their opinion heard through blogs and wikis. It makes the library more transparent through its Web presence and its physical design. We need to make the library human, ubiquitous, and user-centered. This involves a change in our systems, our Web presence, and our very attitudes. It will take a lot of work for a library to be completely Web 2.0 based environment URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1275 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The web has seen the explosion of social networking tools, which are empowering ordinary people to connect, collaborate and contribute in a global collaboration. These social software applications are now the hottest properties of the Internet users. This article explains the how Web 2.0 tools could be applied in academic libraries to convert them as A-Lib 2.0 or Academic Library 2.0. The paper further includes a few cases from different libraries which have already adopted these new services. One recent survey found that 34.41% of total academic libraries in New York State are using Web 2.0 Services; the major ones include IM, Blogs, RSS, Book marking, Wiki, Social Networks, etc. Library 2.0 has changed the traditional way of thinking about the profession where library only engage in creating the content and services for user shifted to the side of user where librarian will enable user to create them for themselves URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1278 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: During the past two decades, internet has evolved with many new techniques and tools such as Email list, Bulletin board, Listserves, Usenet, IRC, Wikis and Blog. Abstract: There are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems(CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. A content management system offers a way to manage large amounts of web-based information that escapes the burden of coding all of the information into each page in HTML by hand. Although the rapid proliferation of commercially available content management systems makes it easier to find a vendor that might have right solution, the cost to purchase a commercial CMS application is very high. As an alternative to commercial CMS, open source solutions are a tantalizing option. Though, there are a huge number of open source CMS available in public domain, it is difficult to decide what solution will work best for a particular organization (or library). The author explain on this paper the functional requirements, for novice users, of a CMS and to evaluate a few most popular open source CMSs. Abstract: The enormous growth of the web, starting from zero to everything in the last decade, has forced us to believe in the impossible again. It might be the long-heralded great library of all knowledge really being within our grip? Today we need a building about the size of a small-town library to house 50 petabytes. With the advancement of tomorrow’s technology, it will fit into our iPod or may be some new device, which can store large amount of data. When that happens, the library of all libraries will ride in our purse or every individual’s pocket. If it doesn’t plug directly into our brain with thin white cords… Converting inked letters into electronic dots that can be read on a screen is simply the first essential step in creating this new library. The real magic will come in the second act, as each word in each book is cross-linked, clustered, cited, extracted, indexed, analyzed, annotated, remixed, reassembled and woven deeper into the culture than ever before. In the new world of books, every bit informs another; every page reads all the other pages… This paper mainly discusses about the long tail as an emerging technology for libraries in the network environme URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1282 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The article addresses activities that involve some of the exclusive rights of copyright holders; the right to make copies, to display or perform copyright works, and in some cases to distribute works; and the copyright law’s exemptions from liability for fair use and for certain library copying. Copyright is legally complicated, controversial, subject to a number of misunderstandings and generally not fully understood even by the librarians whose daily tasks include administering it. To better understand the current status of copyright and its impact on libraries the notion of copyright is briefly outlines, along with what exactly copyright is. Libraries and academic institutions can also influence publishers to adjust their present copyright policies with regard to the reuse of published articles. The expectation is that there will be many digital libraries, most of which will have specialized collections and will be internet worked together in a way loosely resembling today’s Internet. Most digital library project planners are aware there are intellectual property issues that must be resolved in order to successfully deploy their libraries. Some proposals for digital library projects express intent to resolve intellectual property issues as part of the overall plan for the library. Abstract: It seems to recall a time when protocols and standards were two different things. In the past couple of years, the craze over new protocols has seemingly breathed new life into library information technology, replacing the doldrums of standards with the hope of new, universally accepted protocols. It must be admitted that to being too young to have been there, but It would be wonder if things felt like this when MARC and Z39.50 were poised to change the world of library automation. MARC and Z39.50? It’s XML and Open URL, and the Open Archives Initiative. In this paper I tried throwing light on ability to search the resources with a single interface. Abstract: The paper highlights about the importance of total quality management in libraries. It is an view that the condition which challenged in libraries of Total Quality Management are very much prevalent here. It is not, however, clear if library managers are effecting the necessary changes to satisfy their clients. In the face of these challenges it is now time for libraries to exhibit that they are valuable to the continued survival and sustenance of their organizations. This can be done best by activity management. Therefore, it is a “system of continuous improvement employing participative management centered on the needs of customers”. Key components of TQM are employee involvement and training, problem solving teams, statistical methods, long term goals and thinking and recognition that the system, not people produces inefficiencies. It is a systematic process, which focuses on understanding customer needs and improving customer services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1298 Files in this item: 1
