Abstract:

The IITB is an academic and research Institution awarding degrees, offering research Programmes,
accepting Concultancy assignments and sponsored projects are of prime importance. In order to achieve
objectives of the Institution, Reference Section of the Central library, IITB plays vital role by acquiring
different types of books/ non-books materials. The paper describes statistics of present holding of the
reference section, type of reference services provided and what types of new services are added through
Internet. It further describes definition of reference services; and how advantages of Internet have
changed the situation so that the reference service is termed as electronic reference service. The type of
information provided by Internet, its service features also described. benefits, challenges, changing role
of reference librarian, and finally conclusion are described. in order to provide better CAS to users,
subject gateways, digital library, e-reference desk, e-resources ... etc. are the latest additions on the
Website of IITB library. |
