Key Aspects in Planning an Interoperable University Library Access Portal (ULAP): a Conceptual ModelSeneviratne, Wathmanel (INFLIBNET Centre, February NaN, 2003)[more][less]
Abstract: The academic environment is becoming more and more competitive in its dealings and functions and the academic culture is fast transforming as enterprising in nature. The academic library as the centre for scholarly communication faces many challenges in meeting needs and behavioural patterns of users of the university. Among the solutions used in libraries in providing information, an access strategy through web is very much requested by modern users. A university library access portal (ULAP) is the solution for information needs of academic users to facilitate teaching, learning and research. ULAP is supposed to provide updated information and access to e-resources to cope up with the changes and challenges of the curricula and learning outcomes planned under new educational strategies. The paper tries to identify important aspects to consider in portal design and attempts to build up a conceptual model of One Point Access portal for academic users. It is hoped to integrate academic environment and the electronic information environment fulfilling information needs of teachers, students and researchers. Abstract: The success of Knowledge management frame work in an organization depends on the timely and precise updation of the data, tools and techniques used for Information exploration. The Traditional approach of Client Server model requires the data to be pooled at a central place and all clients access this central database for access to the information, which usually requires lot of manual efforts for data collection and maintenance of the database. With recent advancement and popularity of the Peer to Peer Network architecture, we have explored the possibility of the use of such type of architecture for Knowledge Management and Resource discovery. This will ensure timely updation of database and de-centralized mode of data archival. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/185 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information technology is a boon of present century. It is a combination of several technologies and systems, such as computer technology, telecommunication technology, micro-graphic technology and information retrieval technology. Application of IT is imperative for sustainable development in all spheres of human activities. IT, as a tool for harnessing information, should be introduced specially in libraries of higher learning institutes with long term vision and prospective planning at a time when the country has entered the new millennium. The challenges of 21 st century such as globalization, privatization and liberalization should not be neglected by higher education system. Hence the application of IT in higher education should consider these aspects. This paper discusses the librarian's computer awareness and application of IT in college libraries of Yavatmal district (Maharashtra). The author conducted a questionnaire survey of college libraries to find out the proportion of librarian's computer awareness and use of IT application in college libraries of Yavatmal district. The finding of this study was that out of 34 respondents 18 librarians were computer literate and aware of Information Technology. Only 8 colleges have computers in the libraries and 6 college libraries are automated. The results of this study suggest that UGC should provide financial help for the automation of college libraries of higher education and the librarians must get ready by keeping abreast of latest Information Technology in order to face the new challenge in information field. Abstract: Information technology has been one of the major factors causing changes in the way people communicate, locate, retrieve, and use information. The impact of automation on the library is quite obvious and has created new types of work, prompted redefinition of certain functions, influenced interpersonal relationships, and transformed traditional organizational structures into new institutional entities. Libraries today are faced with planning for automation within a rapidly changing and uncertain technological environment. Resource sharing under the circumstances plays a pivotal role. The paper addresses the various issues viz. establishment INFLIBNET and its role in automation of university libraries in India. The new initiative taken by the UGC to establish UGC-Infonet and E-subscription for the Universities gives required boost for the automation activity in the country. Abstract: The present paper is mainly focused on the various aspects of the emerging new technology in libraries for sharing the resources using CD-ROM networking. CD-ROM is becoming the most popular media used for distribution of software due to its high storage capacity, durability and low production cost. IARI library offers database services based on their own collection or through the on-line access to the International databases with help of on-line computer and the internet. Databases play on important role in Library automation Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/250 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information Technology has revolutionized the information handling activities in research and academic libraries in the country. During the past decade or so, use of information technology has been gaining a lot of attention and importance due to the encouragement give by the government of India, university authorities and state governments. We find application of IT in every sphere of work and several government departments have started e-governance cells to reach out to the public to offer their services. Under these circumstances librarians cannot lag behind. This paper gives some useful information to help academic librarians to start automation of their services in a simple way. Abstract: Library computer network security faces many challenges. Library network security must be achieved without any compromise. This paper presents few important guidelines that may help tremendously in improving the secure working of the library computer network. Attempts are being made worldwide with regard to the library network security so as to achieve a very good library network setup. A good library network system should be able to meet three major objectives, namely, data availability, confidentiality, and data integrity. This paper discusses the objectives, plans and tips for library computer network security. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/247 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Information and Comunication Technologies (ICTs) have made a profound impact on the life and work of people. Library and Information is no exception to this phenomenon. Declining library budgets and growing universe of users and documents are forcing us to develop policies and strategies to ensure massive realtime access to quality information in a cost-effective manner. Library consortia is a strategic professional response to obtain the above said mission. This paper is an attempt to map the impact of ICTs on libraries as a metaphor of our documentary heritage, and ascertain professional response to fiscal and technological changes. Particular emphasis has been laid on academic librarires and the Inflibnet initiatives. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/271 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper assumes that the academic library world is in a state of profound and continuous change. The reasons can be summed up in the phrase – the convergence of information technology and communications. The purpose of this paper is to share with you some personal observations on some common “pitfalls” that we library managers make as change agents. I will then offer some simple strategies for working with library staff members in embracing change caused by library automation. Abstract: No system of education is complete unless it is backed by a sound and effective network of libraries. The Information explosion, complete revolution and electronic media especially in the advent of 21 st century where paperless societies and libraries are talked about and established, caused the libraries to undergo a change. Computers have made a paradigm change in reach and dissemination of information. Linking of computers with telecommunication has revolutionized the expansion of information systems. This paper is to explain the role, need and purpose of networking especially for university libraries. By means of LAN and WAN etc. The role of various networks i.e. DELNET, CALIBNET, NICNET, INFLIBNET has been given in brief.
