Abstract: Electronic journals unfold their most valuable features when they are inter-linked with other documents, archives and databases. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures “continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form”. Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. This paper focuses on the issues related to the archiving of electronic journals in Physics and Astronomy by the publishers, aggregators and the consortia. Abstract: Libraries, mostly in the developed countries form such consortia’s for resource sharing. Recently, they have included access to electronic journals, e-books etc. The consortia’s are usually non-profit ventures formed by the association of libraries. In India also some consortia’s like INFLIBNET, DELNET etc. have been formed. But they do not go beyond sharing bibliographic databases of books and periodicals. In this paper the feasibility of consortia approach for journals sharing by Indian libraries is discussed in brief. Abstract: Information concepts and organizational environments such as, Placid-randomized, Placid-cluster, Disturbed-reactive and Turbulent environments, which affect the information dissemination, are crucial in the present high-tech world of digital age. The communication culture in the digital age seems to have a different connotation as compared to earlier times, when it was direct and face to face with a very little chance for miscommunication. Therefore, globalization of communication, which is heavily dependent on innovative information technology, should be implemented with an ethical framework involving quick and proper communication of facts to masses. This may be helpful in prevention of war and promotion of peace/ respect for culture, tradition and values/ promotion of human rights and dignity. Abstract: Information Technology (IT) is the buzzword now-a days. It has brought out fundamental changes in functioning of libraries and the services they provide to the users. Today, in the age of Information Technology, we have the concept of ‘Using Information from Digital and Network Libraries’. For using information from digital libraries, we need speed creativity, ability to retain people and security. All these requirements can be met by Internet and an Intranet. It means that, today, the role and importance of these two buzzwords not only in libraries/organizations but for each human being is very high. Internet should reach to every man, woman and child. In my opinion, therefore, a new slogan should be coined as “Roti, Kapda, Makan aur Internet !”. This paper describes briefly Internet, Intranet, their differences, and their role and applications in an educational organization and particularly in digital libraries and network security. Abstract: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has set-up a “Consortia-based Subscription to Electronic Resources for Technical Education System in India” on the recommendations made by the Expert Group appointed by the ministry. The consortium is named as the Indian National Digital Library in Science and Technology (INDEST) Consortium. The INDEST Consortium has commenced its operation since Dec., 2002 through its headquarters at the IIT Delhi. The Consortium subscribes to full-text electronic resources and bibliographic databases for 38 leading engineering and technological institutions in India including IITs (7), IISc (1), NITs / RECs (17), IIMs (6) and a few other institutions directly funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). While the expenditure on electronic resources proposed for subscription under the consortium for these 38 institutions are being met from the funds made available by the MHRD, the consortium being an open-ended proposition, welcomes all other institutions to join it on their own for sharing benefits it offers in terms of highly discounted subscription rates and better terms of agreement with the publishers. Moreover, beneficiary institutions may also subscribe to additional electronic resources through the consortium that are not being funded by the MHRD. This article introduces the INDEST Consortium, its activities and services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/195 Files in this item: 1
