Abstract: Information Technology (IT) is the buzzword now-a days. It has brought out fundamental changes in functioning of libraries and the services they provide to the users. Today, in the age of Information Technology, we have the concept of ‘Using Information from Digital and Network Libraries’. For using information from digital libraries, we need speed creativity, ability to retain people and security. All these requirements can be met by Internet and an Intranet. It means that, today, the role and importance of these two buzzwords not only in libraries/organizations but for each human being is very high. Internet should reach to every man, woman and child. In my opinion, therefore, a new slogan should be coined as “Roti, Kapda, Makan aur Internet !”. This paper describes briefly Internet, Intranet, their differences, and their role and applications in an educational organization and particularly in digital libraries and network security. Abstract: Information sources are growing enormously and the biggest access point of information today is the Internet. Search engines are the most popular information retrieval tools in the web today. Bur they retrieve more junk than pinpointed information. Can thesaurus be used in improving the quality of information retrieval, in this context ? Most of us are familiar with the concept of traditional thesaurus or dictionary of synonyms. But online thesaurus still remains a concept familiar to librarians, expert searchers and high-end system developers only. This paper tries to discuss the role of thesaurus in improving the quality of modern information retrieval. Abstract: Today’s real border are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated(Kofi Annan, 2001). The humiliated, fettered and powerless, in this context are the rural population, mainly because they are remote, they lack information. With small and widely – dispersed population, rural areas, constantly face deteriorating services. They often face difficulty in obtaining even the essential services, being forced to travel, despite the fact that there is an abundance or saturation of goods and services in their neighbouring urban areas. Many of the services, essential for everyday life are available only in the urban areas. This paper describes the ways in which universities can bridge the digital divide. Abstract: Most of the libraries and information centers now-a-days have acquired access to Internet. Users of these libraries and information centers are making good use of this facility. However, it has been observed that freshers and laymen find it difficult to browse the web effectively since the web is not indexed in any standard manner. Search engines are popular tools for locating web pages, but they often return thousand of results. Without a clear search strategy, using a search engine is like wandering aimlessly in the stacks of a library trying to find a particular book. The presents various methods of searching the web and also presents an easy to follow process using search engines and subject directories for finding relevant information on the World Wide Web. Abstract: A search begins with a search tool’s Web site, reached by means of its address or URL. Each tool’s Web site comprises a store of information called a database. Then the database has links to other databases at other Web sites, and the other Web sites have links to still other Web sites, and so on and so on. Thus, each search tool has extended search capabilities by means of a worldwide system of links. A search tool is a computer program that performs searches and retrieves information. There are different types of search tools In the search engine the different forms based user interface provides access to sophisticated searching capabilities that allow users to find references in their fields. Menu GUI (Graphical Users Interface) pops up asking user to select either the “X” Database or the “Y” Database. Accordingly, the appropriate database contents are loaded into the search engine. e.g. When one of the database buttons in the above step is clicked, the basic user interface for the search engine appears as shown. This pops up another user interface that contains the list of images that satisfied users criteria. If the search criteria are incorrect, then an appropriate error message is posted on the results GUI. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/219 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The design and development of OPACs are the recent development of libraries in India in general and Tamilnadu in particular. The major objective of the paper is to gain an overview of the subject access features of the OPAC interfaces being used in Tamilnadu. A sample of 50 libraries in Tamilnadu was selected. The analysis of the data represents the state-of-the-art of the libraries in the winter of 2002. The data includes, the types and nature of the libraries, Information Technology application, interface used, range of access points provided, subject access facility and types of searches in OPACs. The major findings of the survey are: an emerging trend in the development of OPACs; use of a variety of commercial software, in-house developed software also used in a few libraries; coverage of OPACs limited to book collection only; and absence of standardized vocabulary control tools for subject access. Abstract: Library consortia in today’s digital age are quite different from that of library networks in yester years. The main reason is that the resources that are shared in today’s consortia environment are predominantly in electronic form such as electronic journals and databases. Hence the technology and associated tools to support sharing the electronic resources are also important components for the success of any library consortia. Technology to store, host, retrieve and deliver information resources keep changing. This paper looks at the technology requirements for modern library consortia and issues related to that both at the information providers and member libraries end. An ideal library consortia that is technology enabled is also presented. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/204 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In the authors view Consortia probably resemble vendors more than they resemble libraries. A consortium aims to assist member libraries In the authors view libraries in carrying out their mission of improving the end user's access to information resources. No two consortia are alike: they have different structures, histories, and specific goals. Working with consortia often can reduce a vendor's overhead. It provides member libraries with the information (including pricing) they need to make subscription decisions. They say that If a library consortium puts its Good Housekeeping seal of approval on a new e-resource and discusses it on consortial list servs and at consortial meetings, this helps create an interest and buzz about the e-resource among the member libraries." Handling negotiations and maintaining licenses for products "saves tremendous staff time in the libraries. Vendors should try to unders tand the unique qualities of the consortia with which they work. This article offers guidance directed mostly at vendors. Abstract: Presents a view to stimulate discussion within the Indian library and academic community about adopting a model of library consortia to improve Library and Information Service. Using published literature identifies and discuses factors to be considered for choosing the model. Observes that the very concept of University Library Consortia in India is very fertile one. If hatched i.e. planned and implemented in a proper way can certainly yield fruits. But the success of consortia like other cooperative efforts depends on the proper mix of enthusiasm, innovative thinking, caution and skepticism. As University libraries in India have no or little experience on consortia, these have to go in a humble way. In this connection informal consortia can achieve considerable success provided participating universities effectively act as teams not as individuals to achieve common goals and should not forget “one will not get a chicken by smashing an egg open’. Abstract: In view of the transition stage from print media to electronic media, information seeking pattern of users particularly research scholars are likely to change. The present study was undertaken with an objective to ascertain as to what extent electronic as well as other traditional resources are being used in university environment in India as well as in neighboring counties having similar conditions like India, The analysis was focused to determine the use of the basic information sources in research particularly electronic resources. Results indicate that traditional sources are still dominantly used with little use of electronic media except the use of some commercial subject databases on CD-ROM. Internet use is much below the expectation. Even free e-journals are not being referred. Users, no doubt, have the aptitude to use electronic resources including Internet but lack adequate facilities as well as initiation from professionals. Suggest that enhancing the usability of available resources by way of adapting user to the systems and services seems to be more viable. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/218 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The primary goal of a library is to provide access to information resources to the users. However, as libraries move from paper to electronic medium, providing access to resources over a network safety has become very complicated. Security of assets or resources in a library network should be achieved without any compromise. But, if users are not protected from easy and unauthorized access to the library network the stored information may be at risk. So, the network must be protected by creating some security policies. Libraries will be able to protect their resources by making sure that users will use only those resources for which they have been granted access. The paper describes how to assist the library network professionals in the process of users’ security management. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/215 Files in this item: 1
