Abstract: Pricing is the most flexible, independent and controllable elements of the library management system, which plays an important role in international marketing management. It is based on the fact that, pricing changes appear to promote an immediate response in the environment. Despite the apparent simplicity of using pricing as a major marketing tool, many managers find pricing decisions difficult to make. So in this article internal, external factors which affects the international pricing decisions, role that pricing plays in developing strategies to meet corporate objectives, and the relationship between the different activities of the libraries, developing comprehensive international pricing policy, specific problems have been discussed along with the benefits. Abstract: For some years now, Indian Universities and Colleges have been deprived of access to journals and other professional literature. About two decades ago, University libraries were able to subscribe to a decent number of journals in various subjects. The subscriptions have steadily eroded since funds available to universities have not been able to cover the rising cost of the literature, and today access to journals is all but impossible, except from a handful of major university libraries. It is clear that this trend cannot be reversed in the conventional fashion by providing increased funding. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently undertaken a major new initiative called the UGC-INFONET, which seeks to provide high speed internet connections, electronic access to professional literature, and the development of multimedia content to supplement conventional learning and teaching. In the present paper we describe the part of this project which deals with the provision of electronic access to journals and other literature for the University sector. Major organizations like the CSIR, DAE, AICTE etc have set up consortia involving institutes under the aegis of the respective department to have electronic access. The arrangement here involves incremental payments to be made to publishers to supplement an already large print subscription base. This arrangement is not possible for the Universities, since the present subscription base is very poor, and therefore arrangements which involve electronic subscriptions only are being made with publishers. In our paper we will discuss details about the initiative, the novel aspects of the programme, the great benefits that it will bring to the University sector, its present and future relationship with other consortia, and the role of INFLIBNET in the planning and long term implementation of the scheme. Abstract: Information Technology (IT) is the buzzword now-a days. It has brought out fundamental changes in functioning of libraries and the services they provide to the users. Today, in the age of Information Technology, we have the concept of ‘Using Information from Digital and Network Libraries’. For using information from digital libraries, we need speed creativity, ability to retain people and security. All these requirements can be met by Internet and an Intranet. It means that, today, the role and importance of these two buzzwords not only in libraries/organizations but for each human being is very high. Internet should reach to every man, woman and child. In my opinion, therefore, a new slogan should be coined as “Roti, Kapda, Makan aur Internet !”. This paper describes briefly Internet, Intranet, their differences, and their role and applications in an educational organization and particularly in digital libraries and network security. Abstract: Information sources are growing enormously and the biggest access point of information today is the Internet. Search engines are the most popular information retrieval tools in the web today. Bur they retrieve more junk than pinpointed information. Can thesaurus be used in improving the quality of information retrieval, in this context ? Most of us are familiar with the concept of traditional thesaurus or dictionary of synonyms. But online thesaurus still remains a concept familiar to librarians, expert searchers and high-end system developers only. This paper tries to discuss the role of thesaurus in improving the quality of modern information retrieval. Abstract: Today’s real border are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated(Kofi Annan, 2001). The humiliated, fettered and powerless, in this context are the rural population, mainly because they are remote, they lack information. With small and widely – dispersed population, rural areas, constantly face deteriorating services. They often face difficulty in obtaining even the essential services, being forced to travel, despite the fact that there is an abundance or saturation of goods and services in their neighbouring urban areas. Many of the services, essential for everyday life are available only in the urban areas. This paper describes the ways in which universities can bridge the digital divide. Abstract: Most of the libraries and information centers now-a-days have acquired access to Internet. Users of these libraries and information centers are making good use of this facility. However, it has been observed that freshers and laymen find it difficult to browse the web effectively since the web is not indexed in any standard manner. Search engines are popular tools for locating web pages, but they often return thousand of results. Without a clear search strategy, using a search engine is like wandering aimlessly in the stacks of a library trying to find a particular book. The presents various methods of searching the web and also presents an easy to follow process using search engines and subject directories for finding relevant information on the World Wide Web. Abstract: A search begins with a search tool’s Web site, reached by means of its address or URL. Each tool’s Web site comprises a store of information called a database. Then the database has links to other databases at other Web sites, and the other Web sites have links to still other Web sites, and so on and so on. Thus, each search tool has extended search capabilities by means of a worldwide system of links. A search tool is a computer program that performs searches and retrieves information. There are different types of search tools In the search engine the different forms based user interface provides access to sophisticated searching capabilities that allow users to find references in their fields. Menu GUI (Graphical Users Interface) pops up asking user to select either the “X” Database or the “Y” Database. Accordingly, the appropriate database contents are loaded into the search engine. e.g. When one of the database buttons in the above step is clicked, the basic user interface for the search engine appears as shown. This pops up another user interface that contains the list of images that satisfied users criteria. If the search criteria are incorrect, then an appropriate error message is posted on the results GUI. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/219 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The design and development of OPACs are the recent development of libraries in India in general and Tamilnadu in particular. The major objective of the paper is to gain an overview of the subject access features of the OPAC interfaces being used in Tamilnadu. A sample of 50 libraries in Tamilnadu was selected. The analysis of the data represents the state-of-the-art of the libraries in the winter of 2002. The data includes, the types and nature of the libraries, Information Technology application, interface used, range of access points provided, subject access facility and types of searches in OPACs. The major findings of the survey are: an emerging trend in the development of OPACs; use of a variety of commercial software, in-house developed software also used in a few libraries; coverage of OPACs limited to book collection only; and absence of standardized vocabulary control tools for subject access. Abstract: Library consortia in today’s digital age are quite different from that of library networks in yester years. The main reason is that the resources that are shared in today’s consortia environment are predominantly in electronic form such as electronic journals and databases. Hence the technology and associated tools to support sharing the electronic resources are also important components for the success of any library consortia. Technology to store, host, retrieve and deliver information resources keep changing. This paper looks at the technology requirements for modern library consortia and issues related to that both at the information providers and member libraries end. An ideal library consortia that is technology enabled is also presented. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/204 Files in this item: 1
