Abstract: Increased use of software engineering for model analysis, multimedia technology for usability, explicit support for reuse, metrics for project management and an increased use of natural language facilities will allow tomorrows end users to create their own application. The library is the most important resource for students and young engineers who wish to develop professional expertise quickly. This paper proposes two models viz., simulation model for Library Budget and CASE centered library-forecasting model. Models represent reality and simulation imitates it. Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real world process or systems over time. The paper deals about the purpose of simulation, steps in simulation, CASE tools, and CASE centered library model. Forecasting is employed for the projection of these operations and patterns into the future. The CASE centered forecasting model projected in this paper may be used for the development of an application system to show the potential of shared data base applications or as a foundation for a library management reengineering effort. Abstract: Electronic journals unfold their most valuable features when they are inter-linked with other documents, archives and databases. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures “continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form”. Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. This paper focuses on the issues related to the archiving of electronic journals in Physics and Astronomy by the publishers, aggregators and the consortia. Abstract: Information is the basic necessity for all organizations. New discoveries and inventions have lead to information explosion. It is difficult to avoid redundancy. Several sources and methods of tapping knowledge are available. Knowledge map is one such tool that acts as the pointer to experts in specific knowledge domains. The tool can best be utilized by librarians to identify the domain experts for referral services and to know who knows what in different domains and save the time of the user. Here is a small initiative to bring forward the web-based, database driven Knowledge Map: Kmap-IISc. This Knowledge Map would act as a pointer to experts in specific knowledge domains in Indian Institute of Science (IISc). It has the well-developed content management tool for addition, modification and deletion of expert’s profiles. Search and browse for Kmap-IISc facilitates to retrieve the results of experts working in specific knowledge domains. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/230 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: With the ongoing process of globalization and spurt in knowledge activities, the demand for information has been steadily growing in all the spheres of economy. The information systems and services that provide speed and convenience will survive and thrive as such systems and services will be preferred by users in a growing competitive world. The paper also discuses the impact of ICT on libraries and user communities besides talking about the electronic information services scenario and the challenges facing information users. Continuous developments in ICT have facilitated real-time access to global information, though paradoxically problems related to deluge of information and uninhibited access to information for user communities have also emerged. This paper highlights the Indian scenario and reports two kinds of user studies conducted by the author pertaining to the conventional information usage settings and electronic information environment. These studies depict that information usage in India in both these environments is generally tardy and points out the reasons for the same. The study reflects the fact that information collection also depends on the initiative of users. Presents two cases where information users have put in a herculean effort to collect information and maintain the same in the form of personal information files. The conclusion focuses on the considerable work and effort needed in the country for imparting literacy, computer literacy and information literacy for preparing and powering the masses for the construction of a knowledge based society. Abstract: Information concepts and organizational environments such as, Placid-randomized, Placid-cluster, Disturbed-reactive and Turbulent environments, which affect the information dissemination, are crucial in the present high-tech world of digital age. The communication culture in the digital age seems to have a different connotation as compared to earlier times, when it was direct and face to face with a very little chance for miscommunication. Therefore, globalization of communication, which is heavily dependent on innovative information technology, should be implemented with an ethical framework involving quick and proper communication of facts to masses. This may be helpful in prevention of war and promotion of peace/ respect for culture, tradition and values/ promotion of human rights and dignity. Abstract: Libraries, mostly in the developed countries form such consortia’s for resource sharing. Recently, they have included access to electronic journals, e-books etc. The consortia’s are usually non-profit ventures formed by the association of libraries. In India also some consortia’s like INFLIBNET, DELNET etc. have been formed. But they do not go beyond sharing bibliographic databases of books and periodicals. In this paper the feasibility of consortia approach for journals sharing by Indian libraries is discussed in brief. Abstract: The loss of monopoly status, the rapid growth in the quantity of information, and the fact that information can now be digitized and delivered electronically necessitates that libraries combine their efforts in providing a range of new services through cooperative electronic networks. This is with a view to remaining relevant in spite of the serious reduction in funding coupled with increasing costs of resources. This paper, through a review of literature and visits to websites, identifies five well-established cooperative electronic networks in Southern Africa. The paper discusses their areas of cooperation and reports benefits to member institutions. The paper concludes that cooperative utilization of electronic networks is the most practical approach to providing seamless access to electronic information resources by academic libraries in the digital age. However, Internet connectivity and donor support are essential, for such consortia to be sustainable. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/203 Files in this item: 1
