Abstract: Since past few years free online information sources like e-journals, e-books, e-databases have increased considerably. The traditional library systems are going to transform into digital library systems and different projects like Gutenberg e-book project, Virginia Tech. Digital Library Project, University of California Digital Library project etc. have been undertaken. The author has started to compile the links of such freely available online information sources on the Internet at URL: http://www.geocities.com/ghosh_tbd and described the same in this paper. The paper also describes the impact on collection development, budget and technical processing etc. of the Library and Information centre. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/51 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The world wide web has become an undisputed and powerful medium to integrate multiple information sources and services on the part of the libraries, leading to continual development of new applications and services. Efficient implementation of existing services and an opportunity for delivering information to the desktop of remote and local users has become an immediate priority on the part of the libraries. Locally owned resources like the OPAC, locally hosted electronic journals and databases, alerting services like new additions and content pages, and integrating host of other services call for an unpretentious approach for successful information services. In this paper an effort has been made to study the functions of various indexing and retrieval tools available on the web for their understanding and experience with standard indexing practices facilitating accurate and efficient data retrieval leading to the abstraction of digital library. Abstract: An Algorithm for Cryptography using Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) Polynomial for a Communication System, say, Computer Network, has been developed and implemented. A Cryptography is concerned with keeping, communication private, two men can communicate over an insecure channel, such as Internet in such a way that a third person cannot understand what is being communicated. Such an ideal Crypto System has been developed using L.F.S.R. polynomial. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/31 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: We are living in a digital world. The evidence is everywhere. We see digital camera, digital television, digital diary etc. around us. At the same time, information is also available in digital form at a large scale. Many publishers are publishing their publications in digital form. Some of these outstanding and valuable resources are freely available on Internet. Information seeking on Internet is very difficult. It is said that Internet is the place to find answer for a query in three days, which will require three hours in a traditional library. The present paper lists some of important resources available on Internet. The authors are using these sources to provide reference service in Pune University Library and have visited all the websites described in this paper. These websites are thoroughly studied and found that these are valuable to provide reference service. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/6 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Academic libraries in India have been affected by an uncertain financial environment in which resource buying has been restricted, causing them to look at ways of extending their purchasing capabilities to compensate for reduced budgets. Technological developments, electronic publishing of scholarly journals, emerging of consortia, prizing models of the publishers gives new opportunities for libraries to provide instant access to information. Library consortium is the one of the emerging tool kit for libraries to survive in the e-publishing environment. An attempt has been made to identify the objectives, types, major issues and approach for co nsortia in Indian environment. The paper also highlights some of the important consortia arrangements at International level. The proposed models for academic libraries through different vendors / publisher has been discussed at the end. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/50 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Now a days network based information services have become more useful, affordable, available and usable. In network based information system, users can work simultaneously with multiple distributed information sources that differ in content, form and source types. Libraries serve at least three roles in learning. They serve practical role in sharing expensive resources – both physical and human resources. Libraries serve a cultural role in preserving and organizing artifacts and ideas. Third, libraries serve as a centers of interdisciplinary places shared by learners from all disciplines. If the library is networked, it extends such interdisciplinary approach by making diverse information resources available beyond the physical space shared by a group of learners apart from providing internal resources to the local users as well as remote users. One clear differentiation between traditional libraries and electronic libraries is that electronic libraries offer to deposit as well as use information. Electronic libraries allow storage of information in electronic form, communication from any place to obtain material, copying or taking print out from any place. So, this paper discusses about the network, Internet, Internet resources and services to our user community and remote users also. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/9 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Paper projects the performance of the Internet Service Providers (ISP), especially the leased line connectivity extended from the institutions of Government of India i.e., Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) established under the Ministry of Information Technology and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., (VSNL) established under the Ministry of Communication. Emphasis is laid on the leased line Internet connectivity being extended to the academic institutions and private industrial establishments in Mysore City. Also highlighted are the various issues concerned with hardware and passive component requirements, including the comparison of cost factor. The data /information provided here are based on the empirical studies and experiences gained in both the cases over the past 3 years. Also depicted are the comparison of certain issues of terms and conditions quoted by both the ISPs, while extending the services. More than anything, the effectiveness of services and the customer satisfaction in attending to the work of installation and follow-up services are compared. The merits and demerits in getting the Internet connectivity through the local data circuit maintained by the BSNL (DoT) and the radio waves from the earth station are examined. Abstract: My vision of library and information professionals in the emerging information society is that they would be required to combine the skills of traditional librarianship with those of a communicator, information analyst, web master, and net surfer “ _ Dasgupta. Recent developments like Internet and the emergence of digital libraries have forced to change the way the librarian functions at present. They have to think of ‘access’ rather than simply ‘possession’ of documents. His function is not to identify a document but to deliver the actual information to cater to the needs of the users. Internet is a tidal wave and that is the most talked about subject in library and information science field.
