Abstract: A survey of library and information centres of 12 institutions which include 3 Engineering colleges, 4 Research Centres and 5 Software companies was conducted. While investigating creation and management of digital resources as well as conventional resources, it was observed that engineering colleges have interactive classroom type of learning and therefore the libraries have mainly textbooks/reference books, where as in software companies, information was available in the web based form. It was also observed that software companies were establishing Documentation/Resources centres. In order to interact more effectively to convert information into solutions and useful products via knowledge, it is suggested that libraries/information centres should play an active role in this process. Research institutions and engineering colleges can also follow the learning and skill development process followed by IT companies. Abstract: For several decades, preservation specialists have voiced concern over preservation of our cultural heritage in electronic form. Digital information is no less important than its analogue counterpart. Both require efforts to preserve the wealth that they contain. But, because electronic formats are mo re fragile and rely on technology that is constantly changing, the decisions that must be made about preservation must be considered sooner rather than later. It is in this context, that, this paper explores the issues surrounding the preservation of digital information and throws light on proposed strategies for digital longevity. This paper concludes that the need of hour is to create and develop valid documents in standard formats and adopt suitable methods to preserve data in digital format. Tyagi, Om Prakash (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The age of digital technology has revolutionised communications. It is used and enjoyed by all strata of society for business, education, research, and entertainment. Digitisation of information is of particular relevance to business. Organizations must learn how to use information effectively, as competition will keep increasing and profit margins will be under pressure. Information should be stored in a manner that the retrieval is quick and storage safe and permanent. Paper records, books, journals and reports are not very handy as compared to CD-ROMs when it comes to looking for a particular piece of information. It may take, some times, weeks to compile the results, using traditional records. So, we are looking at digitisation as a solution for the coming years. The digital collections must include genre of library materials such as text (books, serials, dissertations/theses), numeric database (statistical/scientific) and special collections (image, audio, video, manuscript etc.). In this paper, the author focuses on the meaning of digitization, benefits of digitization, application area and digitisation process. Abstract: Information superhighway is today thought of as a revolutionary platform intended to form a network connecting computers globally. The Digital Library System (DLS) is an information service in which all the information resources are available in computer processable form and the functions of acquisition, storage, preservation, retrieval, access and display are carried out through the use of digital technologies. It is not restricted to the provision of information in text format. In fact, audio and video resources are also to be represented digitally. A DLS can disseminate its information across a network and users can retrieve information in the same way. Scholarly and professionals interest in DLS has grown rapidly during 1990s. A typical DLS is a media server connected to high speed networks. This paper discusses the typical DLS, with its components and features. Rajkumar, P V (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The digital library offers users the prospect of access to electronic resources at their convenience temporally and spatially. Users do not have to be concerned with the physical library’s hours of operation, and users do not have to physically go to the library to access resources. Much has been written about the digital library. The focus of most studies, papers, and articles has been on the technology, or on the types of resources offered. Human interaction in the digital library is discussed far less frequently. One would almost get the impression that the service tradition of the physical library will be unnecessary and redundant in the digital library environment. This paper explores the role of the librarian and of the service perspective, in the digital library environment. Focus of the paper is limited to librarian/user collaboration where the librarian and user are not co-located. The author, explores the role of the librarian as outlined in the literature on digital libraries, examines some studies that attempt to put the service perspective in the digital library, surveys existing initiatives in providing library services electronically, and outlines potential service perspectives for the digital library. Abstract: Journals are an important source of information to a research community. But the problems associated with information explosion and escalating cost of journals have made it difficult to effectively access the information contained in journals, even for a narrow subject area. Application of information technology, like availability of on-line journals and e-mail based table of contents services, has eased the problem to some extent. One such service is the Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC) service provided by National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) to the research community at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This service is based on the Current Contents obtained from Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). This work aims to add value to the ETOC service by including information about the availability or non-availability of a journal in the JRD Tata Memorial Library in the institute in the ETOC service.
