Abstract: For Social Science research libraries, preservation of documents is as important as the acquisition, access and retrieval of information. The application of information technology, therefore, needs to be applied to preservation as well. The modern techniques give us the option for preservation, access and retrieval, which was not possible with the traditional options. Digitisation, as a modern method of preservation, is yet to be tested as far as reliability is concerned. So, before undertaking the process of digitisation, a clear-cut policy should be formulated and certain guidelines are to be outlined pertaining to selection, both of documents and software. A cost-benefit analysis should also be made to ensure that the digitisation of documents reaps maximum benefits and justifies the cost involved. Vyas, S D (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The data, concerning human development progress as well as use of information technology in our country, shows that we are still far behind other developed nations. Efforts have been made by present government to make India, a knowledge based society in new era. It has set time bound targets to see that India becomes a 'developed nation' in next twenty years. The paper criticises the concept of knowledge worker, as it fails to identify the due role of library and information professionals. Appreciates the efforts of the Planning Commission and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's India 2020: A Vision of the New Millennium, making an environment in which the people make India a developed nation. It states how our rural people begin to use the tools of information technology in new era. The opening of two Public Information Kiosks (PIKS) by National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), in Andhra Pradesh is a good beginning to harness new technology by its rural people. The paper discusses the role of library and information professionals, as they are actively engaged in finding practicle solutions to the challenges of digital age. The paper points out Christopher Edwards's view that the role of information professionals in knowledge society is neither fully recognised nor understood. He furthers remarks that the major initiatives of the government have always bypassed the library and information sector. Our professional skills developed over generations are marginalised. The paper deliberates upon the recent development in ICTs at international level. The paper concludes with a caution, that, without emphasizing the role of information professionals as well as of libraries and information centres, our vision of knowledge society shall remain a dream. Abstract: Digital libraries aim to provide ready access to the storehouse of humanity's information. Majority of the digital libraries specialise in storing a particular subject field of information which are interwoven together with other participating libraries. Digital libraries combine technology and information sources. They allow remote access of its resources to other libraries by breaking down the physical barriers through national and international computer networks. Digital libraries rest upon-(i) Basic human need for timely and relevant information,(ii) Accumulation of information and all the supporting infrastructure which includes users, professional associations, library and information centres and publishers; and (iii) Advances made in networking, information science, information, artificial intelligence, etc. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/166 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The development of computer and network technology has led to great changes in the field of information science. With the development of World Wide Web technology, the distribution, searching and browsing of information has led to revolutionary changes. Digital libraries calls for resource sharing, which is a convenient way for managing and distributing information among users. Heterogeneous systems have to be interconnected so that the user community can have seamless/precise flow of information as per need. Also, future systems and services must be interoperable so that there is no potential loss of precision or data in the data exchange. This paper is an attempt to study interconnection and interoperability of information systems. Keeping in view the future users requirements, new technologies in the next generation information systems are also discussed. It is essential that in future networks must be interconnected, the service must be interoperable and information must be shared. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/137 Files in this item: 2

Das, Pankaj Kumar (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: Technology advances over the past two decades have made data retrieval faster and easier, giving rise to a substantial industry providing access to professional, business and scientific information. Some progress has been made towards increasing the relevancy of the data with the induction of various search engines and subject directories. Despite these activities, information sources remain scattered, hard to find and difficult to access. Using technology, visionary institutions, associations and individuals build a kind of network resource discovery service, called “Subject Gateways” on the web, which is de-facto network use environment. This subject gateways evolved during the last five years among early digital library projects within the library communities of the various countries. Subject gateways allows libraries and related organizations to explore the usefulness of their subject expertise in the organisation of knowledge in the word of network -based, digital information. This paper gives an overview of the subject gateways, its historical development, definitions, features and lastly the burning issues encompassing it. Also some of the international initiatives related to further research and trend are explored. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/107 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: It is often said that “People must know the past to understand the present and face the future”. This statement more particularly suits to the church archival materials which depict and reflect the church heritage. In this paper an attempt has been made to present an overview of church archival materials in India in general and the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore in particular. It is based on a questionnaire survey. The survey covered various church archives in India. It has been found that in almost all church archives in India the archival materials are not effectively stored and preserved. Therefore, keeping in view, the present state of affairs in the care and maintenance of church archival materials and with the available technology, it is proposed to go in for ‘digitization’ as a means of preservation of church archival materials. In this context, the concept of digitization and its advantages, the hardware and software required for digitization, and the processes have been explained. Further, the type of archival materials to be digitized has been specified. The paper, concluding that in view of the effectiveness of digitization as a means of preservation, urges that in this new millennium the church archives in India should go in for digitization.
