Abstract: Library service is a busy, user-oriented activity, with a deep-rooted emphasis on means rather than ends, on tactics rather than strategy, on building collections rather than on the roles those collections play. This has been reflected by many renewed critics in their professional literature on practical and technical matters. In this paper the authors try to emphasise major changes that are likely to take place and a need for recognition regarding convergence between library, computing , and telecommunications services; of probable changes in the publishing world, and library management using new tools and techniques. Abstract: The digital library offers users the prospect of access to electronic resources at their convenience temporally and spatially. Users do not have to be concerned with the physical library’s hours of operation, and users do not have to physically go to the library to access resources. Much has been written about the digital library. The focus of most studies, papers, and articles has been on the technology, or on the types of resources offered. Human interaction in the digital library is discussed far less frequently. One would almost get the impression that the service tradition of the physical library will be unnecessary and redundant in the digital library environment. This paper explores the role of the librarian and of the service perspective, in the digital library environment. Focus of the paper is limited to librarian/user collaboration where the librarian and user are not co-located. The author, explores the role of the librarian as outlined in the literature on digital libraries, examines some studies that attempt to put the service perspective in the digital library, surveys existing initiatives in providing library services electronically, and outlines potential service perspectives for the digital library. Abstract: This paper introduces the concepts of Information Technology (IT) and its related fields. It defines the scope of Information management (IM). The paper reviews IT application sources/Indicators, which are essential in the context of modern library and information science services and precise library and information science management environment for socio-economic development. It also describes the role of information technology in effective storage, processing and retrieval in light of developmental trends in the field of information management. It discusses certain constraints in effective application of information technology for the management of information in the Indian Context. The constrains, such as the lack of availability and application of IT due to insufficient financial resources, reluctant manpower and ill-developed information infrastructure and other similar factors, come in the way of proper application of IT in the information management that serve as an indicator of socio- economic development which in turn affects the National Development. Abstract: Digitisation of manuscripts aims to stimulate a responsible approach to the sources from which our historical consciousness grows and to contribute to the general availability of information about our history and culture. The project plan aims to initiate and to support the safeguarding of existing documents not only for this generation but also for the future ones. The present paper seeks to outline some of the issues surrounding digitisation at the moment. It does not attempt to provide complete solutions or recommendations regarding hardware, software, resolutions, etc. Instead it provides recommendations applicable to the strategic planning level, with particular reference to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University Library, Aurangabad. Abstract: In present scenario, the Internet resources have become indispensable part of library and information services. Identification, selection and cataloguing of the Internet resources, is a big question of the time. Keeping this fact in mind, it is tried to analyze the characteristics and idiosyncrasies of Internet resources, from the cataloguing point of view. Further more, the emerging format for cataloguing of Internet resources “Dublin Core Metadata Element Set” is discussed in details. Abstract: To be more concrete about the importance of rich representation of Indian Heritage, digitization of ancient purana vidya is prerequisite. Indian heritage has reached to masses in India through 18 puranas, because of their certain outstanding features. The same could be represented very effectively appealing to masses via. Digitization process of it. Towards the digitization, puranas can be represented metaphorically with their structural peculiarities. The main purpose of this research paper is to bring to the floor the metaphorical analysis of this huge source under Indian Heritage(IH), by adopting the analogical model, that will be useful for contents tool designers as well as to the content creators by systematizing and fastening their work, and ultimately to the end users from the point of interfaces. With these issues, exploring an environmental atmosphere to make effective the process of digitization is the need for an integrated Indian Heritage Digital Library. Abstract: Digital libraries will push the traditional model of library- user relationship management beyond its limits. Libraries need a new approach of electronic relationship management to leverage the web's unique strengths for capturing and publishing a single view of library users. Abstract: Journals are an important source of information to a research community. But the problems associated with information explosion and escalating cost of journals have made it difficult to effectively access the information contained in journals, even for a narrow subject area. Application of information technology, like availability of on-line journals and e-mail based table of contents services, has eased the problem to some extent. One such service is the Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC) service provided by National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) to the research community at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This service is based on the Current Contents obtained from Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). This work aims to add value to the ETOC service by including information about the availability or non-availability of a journal in the JRD Tata Memorial Library in the institute in the ETOC service. Abstract: The unique knowledge base for the profession of pharmacy is the body of drug information that the pharmacists use to define, monitor and modify the drug therapy of the patients that he or she serves. Digital resources offer such possibility and possess advantages over traditional sources with respect to access of information. One of the greatest benefit of digital resources is that, users can access the resources themselves. The focus of this paper is on the management of digital resources. Response to specific questions relating to pharmaceutical practices, the growth of pharmaceutical information and the use of Information Technology for managing digital sources are some of the facets dealt in detail. Pharmaceutical Digital Resources in the form of CD-ROMs and Web sites and their contents are detailed for information and use. Finally, an emphasis has been made for acquiring and familiarising Information Technology related techniques for effective use of pharmaceutical information. Abstract: Declining library budgets, growing user expectations, technological innovations, and the globaization of information have forced the library and information (LI) professionals to share their precious resources via networks. As a response to these developments, there is a transition from stand alone libraries to library and information networks, infomediaries to infoliterate end-users, and print-based publications to digital documents. The professional competencies are falling short in managing access to the web-based digital documents. In this context, an effort has been made in this paper to raise a few pertinent issues and discuss the implications of the web-based digital documents for the LI profession. Abstract: Managing the digital contents is a generic problem. Digital contents can include anything from business logic (rules, procedures, standards, specifications, communications etc.) and business transactions to digital books, video and images (digital library) gathered for the purposes of reading, viewing, listening, study and reference. Thus digital library can be called a subset of digital contents. The complexity of managing them is directly proportional to the volume, location and type of contents. Storage technology is advancing and access technology is undergoing changes in terms of hardware and software. The technical challenges in managing and servicing a digital library, have been presented here. Numerous examples have also been given to elaborate the ideas. Abstract: As the Internet became an accepted source of electronic information, a variety of information communities have developed metadata to organize these resources to effectively serve their users. So metadata has taken on a more significant role of knowledge representation and data mining. In today's context, where the web contains the collection of massive heterogeneous objects, which need to be unified and linked in a single resource, we are witnessing both the growth of different metadata standards and the attempts to reconcile the common attributes in the existing overlapping standards. The goal is to access relevant information seamlessly, regardless of its type and location. This article addresses different aspects of metadata, the rationale behind it and gives a general picture of Dublin Core metadata elements. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/87 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Libraries have gone through several changes since inception. The present social, economical and technological stress and strains have put libraries in the process of metamorphism. This metamorphism has brought about a complete new form of libraries known as Digital Libraries. A model has been suggested for developing a Digital Library for small and specialized libraries.
