Abstract: Information retrieval in digital era especially due to non-compatibility between different systems, disparity of interfaces may lead loss of information in information dissemination and affect the precision. Paper emphasized needs of standards to solve interoperability, interconnection issues that adversely affect the success of an Information Retrieval System. ANSI/NISO Z39.50 discussed elaborately with its application, usage, implementation, its relationship with TCP/IP, as well as Information Retrieval, user interface etc that were proved to be essential for successful Information Retrieval System. Abstract: Preservation of digital material has become a major challenge for library and information professionals these days. Although libraries have been concerned with preserving cultural and intellectual heritage for centuries, it is only in recent years that preservation and conservation have become activities in their own right. Preservation of digital material is more complex because of the dependencies that exist between the information object itself and its technical environment- an environment that is generally created using rapidly obsolete and, therefore, fragile technology. This dependence can be at both the software and the hardware levels. In this sense, digital media present more complex problems than any other media libraries have ever had to face. The present article explores various strategies and methodologies for preserving digital materials and also focuses on the pressing need for libraries to develop strategies and practical action plans to maintain the safety and accessibility of the world’s historical and cultural heritage. Abstract: Electronic Information is the logical extension of the development in technology and the positive response to the growing need of the users for easy access of information and rights holders can gain better access to large amounts of rights data, and today most use that electronic tool. In order to manage the electronic information some effective tools like, Electronic Information Management (EIM), must be incorporated. In the simplest definition, EIM means using office technology systematically to help you store, retrieve, and safeguard your organization’s information. Most people think immediately of reducing paper, but as we rely more and more on technology to create digital information - software files, digital photographs, and Email, EIM takes on a broader scope. With current technology it’s possible to manage a complete “library” of information with centralized security, backups and control, different levels of retrieval and access, and archival storage. Digital Right Management offers a better way to manage the records you rely on. Whether documents are stored in an original electronic file format or scanned from paper, managing their storage, access and retention becomes easier with technology. Abstract: Digitisation is no doubt the issues that fascinates and haunts preservation managers in archives and libraries at the moment. The possibilities seem limitless, the advantages are obvious, and from all sides there is pressure to exploit the new medium for preservation purposes-sometimes to the extent that funds are earmarked for digitization that previously have been allocated for microfilming or conservation URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/340 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The extension of IT has been transformed into RFID technology is being widely used in various information centers. It has become difficult to understand the smart card its definition, its application areas, special features, technological convergence and its use in libraries. This is an emerging technology which also reduces the counter staff thus increases the efficiency of overall library personnel. The author has the experience at planning stage for introduction of this technology in one of the National Institutes of technology in India. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/361 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Some websites provide logical structure that helps us find answers and complete tasks. Others lack any intelligible organization and frustrate our attempts to navigate through them. Hence, designing of good, appropriate and intelligible website to manage data and knowledge becomes mandatory. The combination of organization, labeling and navigation schemes within an information system is the Digital Information Architecture. This has been dealt in this paper. Abstract: Libraries play an important role in the academic world by providing access to world-class information resources and services. The explosive growth of Information Technology has paved way to unprecedented phenomenon of access to information. The evolving developments of the recent decades in information access and management have resulted in a situation where information is stored and managed by a large variety of systems around the world. The growing requirements for information support to the globalised socio-economic forces makes efficient and effective availability of distributed information and correlation of relevant data to the user need. Databases and database systems have become essential components of everyday life in our modern society. In our daily lives, most of us would engage in one activity or another that involves some interaction with a database. This paper discusses the technology used to access and manage the distributed information. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/369 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Data Mining refers to the extraction or “Mining” knowledge from large amount of data or Data Warehouse. To do this extraction data mining combines artificial intelligence, statistical analysis and database management systems to attempt to pull knowledge form stored data. This paper gives an overview of this new emerging technology which provides a road map to the next generation of library. And at the end it is explored that how data mining can be effectively and efficiently used in the field of library and information science and its direct and indirect impact on library administration and services. Abstract: This paper describes about the subjects that are relevant to the organization in the field of Knowledge Management, interacting with key users of a University Library. This paper highlights the concept and practice of Knowledge Management without jargons in context to the role of a digital librarian. This article gives a broad and rudimentary Knowledge Management framework, the processes and the benefits. It emphasizes the fact that the Knowledge Management caters to the critical issues of organizational adoption, survival and competence in face of increasingly discontinuous environmental change. Essentially it embodies organizational processes that seek synergistic combination of data and information processing capacity of information technologies, and the creative and innovative capacity of human beings. Further this article ploughs through the phenomenon of the fundamentality of Knowledge Management as to what this mean to library and information service professional. Abstract: Interoperability is a key issue for resource discovery in a library consortia environment. Interoperability is a concept that addresses the extend to which different types of computers, networks, operating systems and applications work together effectively to exchange information in a useful and meaningful manner. The technology enabled library consortia environment is heterogeneous, it hosts many different technologies, various data, multiple applications and other networked resources. There are several emerging standards, which have been developed to facilitate the interchange of data in a distributed environment. Such standards make it possible to perform seamless searches across several distributed resources, which have been implemented on different platforms. Z39.50 standard is becoming an important strategic tool for libraries and other information organizations. The use of Z39.50 can enhance resource sharing by providing a single interface to search multiple information resources. This paper discusses about the z39.50 standard, various components of z39.50 system and its applications in the library consortia environment. Abstract: Phenomenal advancements have taken place in the field of Information and communication technologies in the last decade. Spectacular and innovative changes are expected to take place in these fields in coming decade. Networking technologies are going through a sea change. This paper enumerates the likely networking technologies which are emerging, particularly WLANs. Most of the personal communication in the country will be through cellular/ mobile technologies, which are also covered in the paper. Impact of mobile communication on possible wireless libraries is brought out. Economic and social changes are bound to give a fillip to online or e-education using Web based technologies. The need for correlation and comparison of data from distributed sources is giving rise to new discipline of virtual data warehousing. These topics too are briefly covered in this paper. Abstract: The copyright protection is not merely confined to books but extends to sound recordings, computer programs, films, radio, broadcast etc. The Indian copyright act was passed in 1957 and amended in 1994, 1999 to include computer generating works. Intellectual Property Right in Indian scenario is less known by the people due to extreme illiteracy in context to patent system, copyright etc. included under TRIP (Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights). Librarians play an important role in protecting the rights of copyright holders, patent holders, trademarks, industrial design etc. The Librarians/ information officers should keep themselves aware with latest changes in the Intellectual Property Right and Information Technology Act and their implementation. It is an obligation of the Librarian to keep the user aware about copyright. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/313 Files in this item: 1
