Abstract: Indian University Libraries are constantly grappling with the issue of cost inflation of library resources (cost of library materials have out spaced cost of living) coupled with resource explosion. Some alternate solutions may have emerged in form of rationalization of periodicals, resource sharing, site licences and now consortia. Importances of these concerns have been clearly defined in the main objectives of the INFLIBNET. However, the fundamental problem remains. The paper highlights how by using the Internet / Intranet revolution, this problem can be minimized. The focus of the paper is on developing Institutional Repositories - one of the prime issues that is of utmost importance keeping in view multifaceted factors (information explosion; cost inflation and ICT) that have had immense impact on the existing research cycle. The issues concerning public / open access to scholarly articles in form of Institutional Repositories (IR) are also discussed here in this paper. Abstract: Intellectual Property Rights having numbers of its characters and linked with real and personal property. IP is an asset and may be bought, sold, licensed, leased, exchanged and may be given away like any other property. IP (Patent, trade mark, copy right and trade secrets) are protected on their own way thus their scope of protection and requirements for granting protection (under law) may differ nation to nation. Presently electronic media/ knowledge of the information is a conceptual rather than a physical entity. Its value usually lies in its nature, content and potential use. Under present circumstances the legal opinion and the Court of Justice have to establish the extent of professional relationship between librarians and their uses in this electronic age. According to Tarter “Information liability can be defined as a two fold question. Firstly who is responsible for creating and providing information for third party consumption and secondly to what extent the creator is actually liable for the quality of information.” Liability of information creators, who create information does not enjoy total freedom of expression. Both the creator and the publisher of information irrespective of the medium in which it is produced are jointly responsible for assuring that information content and is acceptable in legal sense. Determining who is liable for information in the electronic environment, is much more difficult task when taking with printed information. The developed countries have evolved elaborate Laws and Rules, so as to reward the creators of the IP to encourage them and gain from their such activities, and also to ensure that the competitive envi ronment continue and works of creativity to reach the customers on reasonable cost. So that the growth of knowledge would serve the country in its overall economic and social developments. Abstract: The copyright protection is not merely confined to books but extends to sound recordings, computer programs, films, radio, broadcast etc. The Indian copyright act was passed in 1957 and amended in 1994, 1999 to include computer generating works. Intellectual Property Right in Indian scenario is less known by the people due to extreme illiteracy in context to patent system, copyright etc. included under TRIP (Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights). Librarians play an important role in protecting the rights of copyright holders, patent holders, trademarks, industrial design etc. The Librarians/ information officers should keep themselves aware with latest changes in the Intellectual Property Right and Information Technology Act and their implementation. It is an obligation of the Librarian to keep the user aware about copyright. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/313 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Interoperability refers to the ability of a Digital Library to work cooperatively with other Digital Libraries in an attempt to provide higher quality services to users. There are many approaches to achieve some degree of interoperability and one such approach involves the creation and use of Open Archives. The OAI is an initiative to develop and promote interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. The OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides an application-independent interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting. OAI-PMH enables automated distribution of any kind of metadata, which may be aggregated into searchable databases by “harvesting” systems. It has reached version 2.0, intended for stable, production services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/352 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Content management technologies have been existing to cater to needs like records management and document management. Inclusion of Web-content in library repositories has necessitated current technological tools to be redesigned. A new content management technology focussing on the management of web-content is seen in the light of LIS. For the present paper, the phases of WCM implementation are factually checked against the findings of a pilot survey conducted for select 15 libraries of Mumbai. Survey findings indicate a definite shift in the activities of handling content. WCM features are juxtaposed against these activities to highlight the WCM benefits. Considering the expenses involved, the article suggests on exploring the Open Source Systems by testing the online demos available. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/378 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is proven to be a promising alternative in relieving the library staff from time-consuming routines. RFID is an innovative automated library system for automatic identification and tracking of library material. An automated library with the support of RFID technology would be a “Booksmart Library” and a “self service station” that insists least intervention by library personnel. RFID technology is helpful in taking inventory, finding missing items and identifying misfiled items. Tags or transponders, the vital components of RFID, are the electronic chips consisting of an integrated circuit and antenna coil that communicate with a reader by means of a radio frequency signal. Since RFID does not require ‘line-of-sight’ between the transponder and the reader, it surmounts the limitations of other automatic identification devices, such as bar coding. Smart labels/tags are designed for lasting to lifetime of the item they identify and also perform the EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) function to detect the thefts. Abstract: Libraries generate, accumulate, and disseminate information to its readers and users in the desired format and at the desired location. The process of using library data more effectively begins by discovering ways to connect the sources of data created by Libraries. The concept of data warehousing and data mining can assist library management in making decisions and setting policies, and can assist the library’s parent organization or community in understanding the information needs of its members. Data mining is the process of analyzing data from different perspectives and summarizing it into useful information. Data mining provides knowledge by uncovering valuable information that can be used for various purposes in different areas of applications. Using various techniques of data mining such as association rules, decision trees, and cross tabulation can help discover this unused information. The scope of this paper is to discuss the role and importance of data warehousing and data mining in making the libraries of the future. This paper first discusses the concept of data warehousing, its characteristics, and its uses. Further, the paper also discusses the concept of data mining and its use in library and information services.
