Abstract: In the digital age, technology is playing a vital role for generating and disseminating information in the network environment. The digital library, consortia, resource sharing, e-documents, online databases, networking; standards and protocol, etc. paved the way for the libraries to procure the technologies in order to provide timely and relevant information to the users. Therefore the costly and complicated technologies should be procured and established in a planned manner. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/310 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: With the forging and making operational consortia subscription of E resources, beginning with journals, by various Academic and Government R and D organizations in the country, there is an immediate need to formulate standard metrics for the analysis of the usage of such resources. In the subsequent phase the outcomes of the analysis can be co-related against various parameters to develop performance measures as relevant to the consortium members. These performance measures can then be used to benchmark against the ‘leaders’ and action item for improving the average usage across the consortium. Ultimately translating into a justifiable ROI – not necessarily in money terms. Unlike in the physical subscription, such measurements and analysis is an intrinsic benefit in E subscription and must be fully utilized. This paper will generally discuss the utility of metrics , prevailing practices of a few E content providers and lay down broad parameters to serve as a basis for evolving a standard set of E metrics. Abstract: Higher education for the development of society is imperative because it not only emphasize on the need of creating the enlightened citizenry for the country but also establishes itself as a potential instrument of social and national reconstruction. Libraries function as an essential integral component in higher education system. Without a proper information and knowledge infrastructure, no education system can sustain and achieve its laid down goals and objectives. But in the past one-decade, due to paucity of funds, libraries are passing through a phase of deterioration, particularly in terms of its collection and services. Lot of efforts have been taken in past to over come the problem of financial crunch such as resource sharing, library networking etc. Advent of information and communication technologies and their capabilities such as high-resolution capture devices, dramatic increase of digital storage media, explosive growth of Internet and WWW, sophisticated search engines, fast-processing power and reducing cost of computers, high bandwidth networks and increasing number of electronic publications have made possible to switch over to technological solutions to the problems of present day university libraries which can not be won otherwise by the traditional system of librarianship. The present paper defines the term e-journals, illustrates the advantages of e-journals in the light of the financial problems, issues and implications, some acquisition considerations of e-journals and highlights the benefits of consortia based subscription of electronic resources. Abstract: In this age of Information Technology, there have been so many opportunities for the Librarians for involvement in an information-based society including electronic and multimedia publishing, Internet based-information services, global networking, web based digital resources etc. The base of recorded information is growing at an accelerating rate, in increasing varieties of formats (texts, numeric, graphic, video, audio, image, electronic, etc.). Virtual Library can be defined as the Internet based Digital Library. The concept of “Virtual Library” is that any person who has a computer by which he can make connection to the library networks can access not only the resources of the library but also access variety of information that is available nationally and internationally through networks, like Internet, Intranet without being physically present in library. This article explains what is meant by a Virtual Library and to build a virtual library in what way the Librarians have to change their roles to face the challenges of modern Information Technologies in the changing environment. Also this article, discusses about the changing role of librarians, the skills needed to build a virtual library and how the virtual information should be collected, managed, preserved and disseminated to the millennium users. Abstract: Increased Research and Development activities in all subject areas initiated massive growth of literature and the advent of Internet provided further impetus to the process. Open nature of Internet served as platform for people to share/ publish their ideas. This condition led to the chaotic state of web. The main reason behind it was the unorganized heap of information in the form of web documents. So, the need of the hour is cataloguing the web, thereby providing appropriate surrogate to locate the relevant piece of information. This paper discusses the need of web cataloguing and the important issues therein. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/372 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Internet is one of the valuable and probably most used information resources for the present days. There is hardly any topic on which information is not available on Internet. But the problem with it is automated indexing and poor recall and precision of retrieval. Tough in some cases, search formation are not formulated properly, still the performance of Internet or website is not satisfactory. Here, an approach of building subject base Internet resources is discussed under the heading of subject gateway. It may be a better tool for retrieving subject information in comparison of popular search engines. Different sides of ‘subject gateways’ are discussed to manage the growing web resources. In conclusion the role of information professionals in this regard is discussed. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/398 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In early days people were communicating orally with one another, offering their perspectives on the world and sharing their passions. By lowering the barriers to publishing, the web can make those communications, whether representing individuals or their organizations, more powerful than ever before, but that require the right tools, metaphors and platforms. Through a gradual process of evolution and technology development, the communications has finally found a native online form through which to express themselves: a new form of web site called the weblog. Abstract: Wireless connectivity is the preferred connectivity in computer networks. It involves connecting laptops, mobile libraries and even bridges to computer networks, without physical wire connections. Wireless connectivity means that individuals can potentially access the Internet, CD-ROM networks and office networks from anywhere and at any time. The lack of a physical connection means that users are able to roam or work wherever they wish and still have access to the computer network. This paper highlights the key elements in wireless connectivity and its potential for deployment in network of libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/360 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Two technologies have changed people’s attitude to communication and information access in the last decade: the Internet and mobile communication. In one hand the classical internet architecture is visible. On the other hand organizations across the country are embracing wireless campus networks. The appeal is obvious- seamless, ubiquitous connectivity for users wherever they are locate. The emergence of 802.11 wireless standards have brought costs down and increased compatibility. Setting up a wireless network is trivial –most equipment works out of the box with little or no configuration. In this article the authors intend to describe a guide line of achieving an m-library with WML (Wireless Mark-up Language) in WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) in WLAN environment.
