Abstract: This paper discusses introduction to full text search, its comparison with traditional approach, which gives insight on popular open source indexing and searching tools viz a viz. Lucene and Solr by Apache Foundation. In internet era libraries are known as knowledge warehouses. Library databases are prominently available in MARCXML format and there are very few free and open source (FOSS) implementations are available in public domain. Many efforts are made in integrating the popular searching and indexing techniques which powers even some of the world’s largest search engines, In library domain this has not been attempted properly This paper is an attempt to showcase technique for implementation of Lucene/Solr based fulltext indexing over MARCXML based catalogue records to provide reliable, fast and dynamic search interface with provision of facets. Abstract: The paper examines the concept of return on investment (ROI) in the context of special libraries. The aim of ROI is to establish a relationship between the special library and its host institution that could be expressed in quantifiable terms and which would satisfy administrators and demonstrate the library’s economic value to the institution. The value of a library to its parent institution is difficult to measure. Many different methods have been used to measure value, including return on investment (ROI), contingent valuation, and other explicit and implicit measures — essentially derived from library services and user satisfaction. This article describes major functions, activities and services of the INMAS library. It briefly touches upon both print and e-resources subscribed by INMAS library. The article outlines activities undertaken by INMAS library which are leading to cost saving and cost recovery, thereby, increasing return on investment (ROI).This article elaborates on strategies used by INMAS library for effective promotion- for increased utilization of its resources, which shall in turn result in increased research output in form of various products and services and a better ROI. Lastly, this article outlines future endeavors of the INMAS library which shall ultimately result in increased for the library. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1648 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The libraries have been posed with a serious challenge to present evidence justifying the value of the services they offer, as well as for planning and decision-making about the future for its cost effectiveness. Attempts have been made to present the issues that can affect the success with which librarians can extend virtual reference services in an academic environment. Virtual reference services is no more complex than the other types of library and information services, may be at the beginning it may take time to use this sort of e-services but in due course of time this would yield fruitful result URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1611 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The use of digital library in this era advances the speed of information access. In this regard the demand for the digitization of the paper based information into the digital format is evolving. Most of the time this requirements are fulfilled by developing digital library which are capable to hold and store a huge amount of digital data either separately or in archive. The present digital library system is facing the problem of incomplete/partial automation, resource sharing operation integration, interoperability due to heterogeneous data, information and knowledge for information discovery. Adding semantics to the digital library can alleviate the same. So, a proper Knowledge Management System based on Ontology is a key requirement. In this paper a conceptual framework is proposed for better Knowledge Management for the digital library using Ontologies. In addition to that this paper discusses about the necessity of constructing ontology based knowledge management in digital libraries using semantics. Abstract: Plagiarism is an important ethical issue, but many researchers are still not aware of its seriousness. It is a general observation that plagiarism implies just copying or borrowing another’s work and original ideas. Terms such as ‘copying’ and ‘borrowing’ can misguide readers from the seriousness of this cognizable offense and lead them towards copyright violations. Both the teacher/guide and the librarian can play key role in reducing plagiarism by guiding students on how to use and cite proper sources of information through information literacy programs. This paper discusses the issue of plagiarism along with examples from the field of Arts and Humanities, and anti-plagiarism initiatives taken in India. The author suggests that to some extent plagiarism can be avoided with an information literacy programme, and this paper attempts to present information on this literacy framework. Abstract: The universe of libraries has evolved and expanded from repository of books, journals and other non-print materials in physical format to knowledge repositories that contain collections in physical as well as electronic and multimedia format. With this changing environment of collection of library resources, the greatest challenge in front of libraries is to find out the best way to present, promote and make accessible the growing collections of heterogeneous resources. Libraries are required to look for search and discovering tools to provide seamless access to their resources. This article introduces basic philosophy of federated search and discovery tools. It elaborates on technological tools, techniques and protocols that are used for developing federated search and discovery tools. The article narrates disadvantages of federated search solutions and discovery tools as compared to conducting a search directly on the interface of primary database. The Concept of open URL as a technology used for link-resolving and finding “appropriate copy” is discussed briefly. Lastly, the article describes contemporary federated search solutions and discovery tools that are available commercially or as open source solution with their merits, demerits and comparative performance. Abstract: Online communities of practice may use a specific tag on social bookmarking sites that enable resources to be “advertised” within that community. Considered a better alternative to submitting a website on blogs, manual social bookmarking is a simple, convenient and hassle free way of making sure that our site is noticed and marketed in the right circle. Web 2.0 technologies will promote and enable fundamental changes on intranets. Social software, such as blogs, wikis, tagging systems and collaborative filters, treats the group as a first class object within the system. The paper focus on to explore some of the important social tagging, social bookmarks, and social network related tools and services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1600 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Internet is one of the valuable and probably most used information resources in the libraries present days. Information Technology have made data retrieval easier and faster, giving rise to a substantial industry providing access to professional, business and scientific information. In Indian context a little progress has been made towards increasing the relevancy of the data with the initiation of various search engines and subject directories. In absence of these activities, information sources remain unreachable, unsearchable, hard to find and difficult to access. INFLIBNET Centre’s” Subject Gateway” is an attempt to make the things somewhat simple. “Subject Gateway” allows user to browse subject lists of good quality and evaluated subject resources. A subject gateway allows libraries and related organizations to explore the usefulness of their subject expertise in the organisation of knowledge in the word of network -based, digital information. In this paper we have discussed development and implementation of “Subject Gateway” at INFLIBNET Centre URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1622 Files in this item: 1
