Abstract: Open Source movement has tremendously influenced Information industry in general and digital libraries in particular. Many of the open source digital library software available on the World Wide Web are developed based on highly sophisticated programming language, which needs in depth knowledge and guidance for installing, implementing, customizing and integrating with other open source software. They generally do not cater to the needs of beginners who want to develop software in open source environment. Present paper is an attempt to enable Integrated Library Automation Software (ILAP) Koha, as a digital library especially koha version 3 in the view that koha can support digital library functionality. Abstract: This paper discusses introduction to full text search, its comparison with traditional approach, which gives insight on popular open source indexing and searching tools viz a viz. Lucene and Solr by Apache Foundation. In internet era libraries are known as knowledge warehouses. Library databases are prominently available in MARCXML format and there are very few free and open source (FOSS) implementations are available in public domain. Many efforts are made in integrating the popular searching and indexing techniques which powers even some of the world’s largest search engines, In library domain this has not been attempted pr operly. This paper is an attempt to showcase technique for implementation of Lucene/Solr based full text indexing over MARCXML based catalogue records to provide reliable, fast and dynamic search interface with provision of facets. Abstract: Internet is one of the valuable and probably most used information resources in the libraries present days. Information Technology have made data retrieval easier and faster, giving rise to a substantial industry providing access to professional, business and scientific information. In Indian context a little progress has been made towards increasing the relevancy of the data with the initiation of various search engines and subject directories. In absence of these activities, information sources remain unreachable, unsearchable, hard to find and difficult to access. INFLIBNET Centre’s” Subject Gateway” is an attempt to make the things somewhat simple. “Subject Gateway” allows user to browse subject lists of good quality and evaluated subject resources. A subject gateway allows libraries and related organizations to explore the usefulness of their subject expertise in the organisation of knowledge in the word of network -based, digital information. In this paper we have discussed development and implementation of “Subject Gateway” at INFLIBNET Centre URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1622 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The study analysed the research productivity of social scientists at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, during 19998-2008. The paper gives a summary and review of the various research evaluation studies of institutions and disciplines. There were 599 research articles published by the CDS researchers, including 38.23% journal articles, 23.54% chapters in books and 15.03% working papers. The highest number of publications was in the year 2008.Kerala’s developmental issues (32%) and industry, technology & development (26%) were the leading areas of research during the period of study. Authorship pattern revealed that majority of the contributions were singe- authored (56.59%) and the remaining were multi author contributions (43.41%). The degree of authorship collaboration is found to be 0.43. More than 66% of journal articles published are in Indian journals and 33.19% are published in foreign journals. Economic and Political Weekly, contributes the highest number of articles, 79 (34.50%) followed by Indian journal of Labour Economics with 7 (3.06%). Abstract: In many developing countries there has always been a problem in acquiring and storing printed materials because delivery was expensive and storage difficult in a humid climate. In the digital era these problems are solvable and avoidable. However do not imagine that you can throw away all the bibliographical standards that a physical library needs. Digital libraries need a good index and need quality catalogue records and good classification to supplement full text indexing which on its own can make retrieval of relevant materials difficult. Standards like MARC and classification schemes are indispensible as are standards necessary to create the information retrieval structure. Additionally librarians must work together in teams and provide good information literacy training. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1594 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The libraries have been posed with a serious challenge to present evidence justifying the value of the services they offer, as well as for planning and decision-making about the future for its cost effectiveness. Attempts have been made to present the issues that can affect the success with which librarians can extend virtual reference services in an academic environment. Virtual reference services is no more complex than the other types of library and information services, may be at the beginning it may take time to use this sort of e-services but in due course of time this would yield fruitful result URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1611 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Internet is a huge source of free and openly available information. However, the awareness about the availability of such free and open source information amongst members of the academic community is not clearly known. This aspect was studied using a structured questionnaire and the data recorded through the survey was analyzed. The results reinforce the commonly held belief that the academic community is largely unaware of these vast and freely available resources. The study also points out the role a librarian can play in imparting awareness through information literacy sessions from the library . URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1626 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information Literacy warrants acknowledging the documents cited for writing articles, research papers, term papers and assignments. Those who copy/use another person’s ideas illegally are now known in the LIS circle as ‘Plague Patients’. In order to be free from ‘Plague’ the academic scan use any plagiarism detection tool available. This will help to avoid unintentional duplication of information as well. Plagiarism detection tools are useful to the academic community to detect plagiarism of others and avoid such unlawful activity. The present paper describes some of the plagiarism detection tools available for plagiarism checking. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1629 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In the present information society, the world is changing into global village, classrooms are changing into virtual class rooms and libraries are changing to information centers. Students are more technology oriented and so the whole teaching-learning process. The students are expected to learn beyond the syllabus and teachers should play a role of facilitator. This is due to advent of information and communication technology. Every aspect of education is changed. e-learning, e-resources, etc. are the common words. Everyone in the education system is depend upon the information. As a result of it, we are facing new challenges like information overload, information poverty, etc. To face this challenges the librarians and educationist must think collaboratively to impart information literacy among the students so as to survive in this information age. The teachers should be information literate so that they can implement the information literacy programme in their schools. But there is a need to impart the information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre service teacher education. This paper tries to suggest a model and a draft programme with teaching and learning techniques which will be suitable to impart information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre-service teacher education in India. And it demands collaborative efforts of librarians, teachers, educators, educationists and policy makers. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1630 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The information society calls for all people to become information literate which means that they should not only be able to recognize when information is needed but also be able to identify, locate, evaluate and use effectively information needed for decision making or fulfilling different goals. Information literacy (IL) is increasingly important in the present context of the information explosion and related uncertainties about its authenticity, validity, and reliability.
