Abstract: This paper is to describe essentiality of Information Literacy skills that makes individuals competent life long learner. IL teach individual to find, evaluate, sought, filter and use information effectively. This enhances students perception and they can enjoy learning .How do faculties make use of ICT in teaching? Which are the Pedagogies they use to teach their students? What do the teacher think about the role played by Librarian in the development of IL skills amongst the students ? A survey was conducted for taking views form faculty on information literacy. Pedagogical practices followed by them were asked. This paper is a result of the findings of the survey. Abstract: The traditional functions of libraries had undergone various changes in present century and E-Resources have great importance in libraries and amongst the library users. The present study has been undertaken with an attempt to evaluate the usage pattern of electronic resources made available in the Assam University Library under the UGC- INFONET E-Journals/ Digital Library Consortium of UGC/INFLIBNET amongst the research scholars and teachers of Northeastern Region of India with special reference to Assam University, Silchar. The faculty, research scholars and students are mainly drawn from different parts of North Eastern States and few from other parts of the country which represent truly cosmopolitan population. For that purpose, survey method has been adopted by the investigators, which comprises of administration of questionnaire, Observation of the participants, and interview of some of the participants for knowing the opinion of the respondents in respect of usage of electronic resources (e-journals/e-books/databases) for their academic and research activities. The self designed questionnaire comprising of 15 questions has been distributed amongst the randomly selected samples .The samples comprises of faculty members, research scholars,UG/PG Students and officers / staff. The filled up questionnaires have been collected from the respondents for the data analysis and interpretations. On the basis of filled up questionnaire the data has been analysed and tabulated using SPSS Software. For data analysis percentage technique, has been adopted. Due to paucity of space important results findings have been enumerated in brief. The present work was carried out during July- December 2009. Therefore the present investigation is delimited to the randomly selected population of Assam University Library Users who are regularly visiting Assam University Library and using the Internet for accessing to the e-resources available under the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortia of INFLIBNET/ UGC. The questionnaire was distributed to 350 samples, out of which 319 respondents have responded. The same study may be carried out on the larger section of population covering other universities of North Eastern Region of India to get more generalized and authentic findings. The findings of the present study may be taken as the preliminary findings from a pilot study. The paper highlights the important survey findings in respect of Internet Awareness, Internet Use Pattern and attitude of library users towards the electronic resources, which have been made available to them under UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium. Besides this, some faced by the respondents have also been discussed and few suggestions and recommendations have also been enumerated in brief.. Abstract: The advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has made a tremendousimprovement and change almost in all walks of life. Especially the magnetic word information technology has been changed in all corners of the global areas. Present paper presents the results of a research study conducted to survey the use of ICT in R & D libraries. It describes about library staff, classification & cataloguing method followed status of digital library,infrastructural facilities and barriers in use of ICT in R & D libraries. From this study it confirms that most of the research and development libraries are automated and most of the libraries having good infrastructure with regards to ICT tools. Abstract: The Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Thiruvananthapuram, one of the constituent colleges of the Kerala Agricultural University, has been offering M Sc Degree in Soil Science since 1963. As part of the programme the students have to carry out research on an approved topic and submit the thesis. During the period of 1963 to 2010, 129 theses have been submitted in soil science. A study of the citations in a sample of 18 theses, selected at 10 year intervals is carried out with a view to ascertaining the characteristics of the information sources used by the scholars. The 18 theses selected as sample, altogether carries 1794 references distributed among different categories such as monographs and reference books (8.58%), papers in learned journals (68.84%), conference papers/ proceedings (4.12%), government publications (4.35%), theses (6.4%) and other (7.69%) which include technical reports, statistical bulletins and research reports. Analysing the age of cited items, the obsolescence rate of literature in soil science was calculated. Median citation age is found to be 11.13 years. Abstract: This study examines the use of online resources by the students of Indus Business Academy, Bangalore and Greater NOIDA, India. A well-structured 95 questionnaires were distributed among the 167 PGDM students of management to find out the use of online resources of the information centers. The present study demonstrates and elaborates the various aspects of uses of online resources and services provided by the institute library, user’s awareness about ICT/Digital Information, frequency and purposes of visit, Linking patterns, type of e-information, uses of search engine, problems , user satisfaction within information services, and utility of online resources. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess the web-based information retrieval pattern of the students of Calicut Medical College, Kerala. Structured questionnaires were employed to collect data from a representative sample of 100 MBBS students. The study found that a majority of the students often use the web for communication and to get general information and recent advances in Medicine. A good number of the students use web-mail and social networking sites very frequently. All the students use simple search methods for accessing the web. Google is the most preferred search engine followed by Yahoo. Only a very few of the students use e-journals and databases. Lack of training/orientation, lack of computer infrastructure, lack of fulltext e-journals and low Internet backbone speed are the major reasons of underutilization of web-based information resources. The findings of this study would assist medical institutions in India to develop strategies and policies that could make better use of web-based information resources for medical education and research. Abstract: The paper discusses the role of libraries in the Semantic Web. It provides a brief introduction to the Semantic Web and its technologies, including Resource Description Framework, and their relevance to library metadata. It describes the evolution of library expertise in developing metadata schemas and creating structured metadata, and the resulting quantities of rich, high-quality metadata records that might provide critical mass to the development and utility of the Semantic Web. The paper outlines modern analyses of user tasks and requirements for knowledge discovery, including International Standard Bibliographic Description, Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, and RDA: resource description and access, and how the associated models and rules are being made available to the Semantic Web. Examples of current initiatives to make legacy metadata available are given, and the work of the W3 Library Linked Data Incubator group described. The paper then discusses the potential impact of the Semantic Web on library metadata management, as the focus changes from record to individual statement, and the beneficial impact on users of Web and library service. Abstract: In the digital environment the academicians’ interest are moving towards accessing and using Electronic journals for their day to day academic activities. These are one of the main means used by researchers for scholarly communication. They play an important role in the creation and communication of knowledge. There are thousands of open access titles available. The promising open access movement is opening alternate channels for the distribution of scholarly work. As the availability of open access journals increasing, accessing to these journals is also increasing gradually. No doubt the digital information is becoming popular among users in almost all the libraries. Considering the importance of open access journals the research study has been undertaken to provide awareness to the faculty members of five Autonomous Colleges in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The study result would provide library professionals and academicians with clear insights into the benefits of using open access journals. The study result reveals that the majority respondents are unaware of open access journals and among those who uses electronic journals majority of them are using open access journals for their academic purposes. Through this study the researcher provided awareness to the to the faculty members regarding various open access initiatives available in India and abroad.
