Abstract: The World Wide Web has a great impact on the people for communication and transactions. It has helped transform communities towards knowledge economy, broadly speaking into a knowledge society. Now the web is facing a significant change since its inception, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee is again at the forefront of the change introducing the concept of Semantic Web. In this paper I will be trying to emphasize on some of the following points. At first a general idea about www then search engines general features and advanced features after that its drawbacks and semantic web and its different aspects. The main moto behind this paper is to show how this Semantic Web technology helps in information retrieval which are not possible by the search engines. Abstract: Information sharing using wireless medium has picked up momentum in the recent years due to the huge penetration of mobile devices to the critical mass. Cellular phone, Wireless, PDA, and other Mobile Devices are increasing in number among the academic community. Sharing the information by using the latest wireless network technology such as Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and cellular technology such as GSM, GPRS, CDMA, TDMA, WAP / WAP 2.0, WML, WMLScript, XHTML MP, WCSS / WAP CSS and SMS are predominantly becoming most sought after development platform now. Leveraging this development in technology, it is also important to explore the possibility of such technological advantages for the effective management of Library activities. SOUL is a software designed, developed and distributed by INFLIBNET to academic institutions in the country for Library Automation. SMS interface to such a package will be an added advantage for the timely alert for the services rendered by the software. This paper discusses the development paradigm for the SMS interface for the new SOUL software for reminder module, alert for the vendor/publisher, user service, CAS service etc. using standard solutions for information sharing using mobile devices. Abstract: In the past two or three years, e-journals have become the largest and fastest growing segment of the digital collections. Collections that a few years ago numbered in the few hundreds of titles now number in the thousands, and the rate of growth continues to increase. We need to archive/preserved the copies of e-journals for future generations were the same copies being read by the current generation of users. Archiving of the E- Journal/E- Content addresses two major issues, Firstly, is giving access to the sources. Secondly, its preservation for long – term use. In this paper I will discusses the issues related to e-journal archiving and their possible solution using some open source software like LOCKSS, Dspace, Eprint, etc. In this paper I am also going to discuss the framework for Evaluation of Archiving Software. Abstract: The paper proposes a model which focuses on a strategy to implement successful open learning support system with a productive collaboration with the faculty. The learner is supported for his open learning correspondence through value added services and information products introduced through the virtual library portal. The Internet enabled library portal is a focused interactive learning space where information flow is targeted to the learning contacts and assignments at hand of the student. The portal is one stop shop model where the user is provided with the learning activity support and the information access facility. Information access facility, though conventional, is converted into flexible mode using modern learning and communication software. The learning activity support is developed into a value added service where the user is supported through faculty-library collaborative development of information products and services where most of the relevant products are available in the digitized environment for the studentship of both distance and on campus. Ultimate objective of the portal strategy is to provide the distance user with learning and literary support through Internet technology. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/554 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper discusses the changing nature of reference and information services in the modern electronic era and how the various technological developments in libraries have led to the emergence of new service paradigms. Electronic access to information is transforming both the concept of future libraries and the way in which reference librarians are disseminating the information services. This paper also describes the nature of reference services being provided in Panjab University Library in the context of changing technologies. The wide availability of electronic information and access to databases, full-text periodicals, etc. have further enabled the library to offer customized electronic reference services to their users that increases both the richness of these services and the number of users getting benefited from these. Abstract: In this paper an attempt has been made to describe a survey of the use of information resources by students, teachers and administrative staff as users of academic college libraries of Chandigarh. A questionnaire is used to identify the impressions of users towards the awareness of library services, adequacy of library resources and their views on library services. This paper also examines the satisfaction levels of users about the library collection. Further an attempt has also been made to highlight the findings of the study and a few suggestions have been given based on the analysis of collected data. Abstract: Over the last few years there has been a rapid rise in the electronic journals and this electronic delivery of journals has resulted this study. Users of the E-journals in the A.C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh were studied in this survey. Study highlights the level of the use of the available electronic journals. Experiences of faculty and students about various issues relating to electronic journals are highlighted. This article also discusses whether attitudes of the users change depending upon gender, age, access place and branch of study etc. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1449 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The present paper explains about UGC-Infonet Consortium of the INFLIBNET and examined use of the Consortium by the Faculty Members and Research Scholars. Further, the data is collected through a questionnaire to study the information needs of the Faculty Members and Researchers in Chemistry and Use of UGC-Infonet Consortium by the Faculty Members and Research Scholars in the Dept of Chemistry, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. The paper revealed that UGC Infonet Consortium is much helpful in fulfilling their information needs. There is need to train the faculty members and research scholars in using the UGC-Infonet Journals. Further, there is need to include more number of Journals in the Consortium. Abstract: Most of the Libraries today, offer a wide range of on-line services to their users. And, now, the internet and web technologies are not the new things to any academician hence, it is the time for a Library to be virtual and develop its on-line presence in order to further facilitate and enrich the educational processes. In this direction, Virtual Libraries provide a new way of serving the new generation users of the libraries. Virtual libraries are the new vision of libraries of the future. This paper provides an overview of a Virtual Library System. It narrates purpose, features, functions, design and development of a Virtual Library and Virtual Library Environment. Impact of ‘Virtual Library’ on ‘Lifelong Learning’ has also been emphasized. It also enumerates principles of development of Virtual Library Collection and advantages of Virtual Libraries. Notably, suggests and advocates for the Virtual Library of India to be hosted by the INFLIBNET Centre. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1430 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information Technology has made significant stride in the way of acquiring, storing, retrieving, accessing and disseminating information. The advent of computer net works ushers a new path to the Library and gives a new dimension to the traditional job of library such as information retrieval and dissemination. The present paper is describes the over all access of information on computer network using wireless communication called Wi- Max technology. With Wi-Max any body can access internet connectivity any where without physical connection. This article highlights the salient features of Wi-Max technology. Bangalore is the fully wire less city within this year. Only the second city in the world to be fully Wi-Max enabled, after Taipei and compare to other technologies available such as OFC, Broadband, Wi-Fi etc. and also highlights common problems of adoption and absorption of such network technology in India. Abstract: We seem to recall a time when protocols and standards were two different things. In the past couple of years, the craze over new protocols has seemingly breathed new life into library information technology, replacing the doldrums of standards with the hope of new, universally accepted protocols. We must admit to being too young to have been there, but we wonder if things felt like this when MARC and Wireless LAN were poised to change the world of library automation as also in XML, OpenURL, and the Open Archives. An increased rate of mobility brought about by the Wireless LAN break through has given a new dimension to networking capabilities. The IEEE 802.11 defines standards for both 1-2 Mbps and higher speed wireless communication. The study of the PHY and the MAC layer as per the IEEE 802.11 protocols reveal that the issues like security and reliability of utmost importance in this type of networking. In short if higher speed networking of this kind can be created then there would be no need for the conventional physical medium communication. Globalization of this technology would indeed bring the world closer and bring about a new era of wireless technology in the Library. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1429 Files in this item: 1
