Abstract: The World Wide Web is a universal information space. As a medium for human exchange, it is becoming mature, but we are just beginning to build a space where automated agents can contribute –just beginning to build the Semantic Web. The RDF Schema design [RDF Schema] and XML Schema design [XML Schema] began independently but now a common model is needed where they fit together as interlocking pieces of the semantic web technology. Abstract: Today 80 % of the content on the Web is in English, which is spoken by only 8% of the World population and 5% of Indian population. There is wealth of useful content in the various languages of the world other than English, which can be made available on the Internet. But, to date, for various reasons most of it is not yet available on the Internet. India itself has 18 officially recognized languages and scores of dialects. Although the medium of instruction for most of the higher education and research in India is English, substantial amount of literature by way of novels, textbooks, scholarly information are being generated in the other languages in the country. Many of the e-governance initiatives are in the respective state languages. In the past, support for different languages by the operating systems and the software packages were not very encouraging. However, with the advent of Unicode technology, operating systems and software packages are supporting almost all the major languages of the world that have scripts. In the work reported in this paper, we have explained the configuration changes that are needed for Eprints.org software to store multilingual content and to create a multilingual user interface. Abstract: Library plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of higher degree of research in the university environment. Information technology has revolutionized the information handling activities in the academic libraries during the past few years. The Information Society demands that all the relevant technologies; that are involved in information processing, consolidation, repackaging and retrieval be merged so as to evolve an integrated system; capable of providing diversified services. In this direction the automation of individual university libraries is a first step, rather a pre-requisite for the development of such an integrated university library and information system. In this research study an attempt has been made to study the automation and networking of universities in India and discuss the need for an integrated information system and the components of integrated information system. Abstract: The paper introduces e-information literacy as the accepted phenomena, which helps in delivery of information, training or education programs via electronic media. It includes wide range of electronic communications like, Internet, intranet, satellite broadcast, digital television, CD-ROM, DVD, audio and video tapes, etc. Discusses the impact of e-learning on distance education and emphasizes on a paradigm shift that has facilitated the transfer of focus from the teacher to learner, and the institution of instruction to the study –room/ workplace of the learners. Also emphasizes on nature of libraries and the professional activities of the librarians are fast changing because of introduction of web technology in to the publication and communication of information, influencing the strategic direction of the development of libraries in the society. Due to interoperable opportunity, the new technology allows information to be easily personalized and customized. Librarians and LIS faculties can contribute to foster the skills through the strategic use of e-information learning tools and devices for better outcomes. Elaborates in detail about the status of e-education programmes along with course content and techniques to be used for e-education implementation in India. The LIS professionals and the web-technologists along with the planners have to play the key role for proper implementation of this e-information literacy programme that can reach to every sectors of our society. Abstract: World Wide Web, as a public source of information, contains enormous amount of data in different formats. This paper critically examines four web-based information storage formats and the searching mechanisms being used in them. The scope of this paper is limited to HTML, XML, PDF and Image format. It describes briefly the leverages and perils of using each of these formats and critically compares their support systems. The paper also offers advice to Librarians to enable them to manage web-based information in a better way for their users by using suitable format(s). Abstract: To enable Interoperability in web based Information Systems there is a need of unique communication protocol. In this respect, Z39.50 playing an important role in Interoperability of the Information Systems. It does not determine how systems will be built, how they will present information to the user and so on. Z39.50 systems have been put together in many ways to suit different needs. It has been used for the compatibility of exchange of data and can be incorporated into all sorts of products and systems only a few of which are currently being exploited. An attempt has been made to provide complete overview of Z39.50 compatibilities for smooth functioning of web based information systems. Further it also provides web standards and search interface support for combination of search terms from different search attribute sets. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/560 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Library and Information Centres are expected to reveal the world to serve the users with information regarding their services and special collections using the World Wide Web and as such the Library managers acting as Content Managers in the Internet world have to design the library web page to facilitate and supplement access to current information resources and services. An attempt has been made in this paper to analyze the library web portals of academic institutions in Karnataka in order to enhance the effective use of library web sites to become more user friendly for information access. Academic Library web sites in Karnataka are analyzed and the results show that, majority of library portals are very concise and lack the current awareness services and updation policy. Also highlights the review of literature and addresses the considerations that must be made when serving library information over the World Wide Web. Abstract: In an Organization, the computer communication have brought emerging technology like libraries, research centers, information centers etc. The computerizing of the Libraries can share the information to improve the quality and availability of information. The comparison between conventional library and digital library enhance the responsibility to bridge the information gaps for users. Here we discuss about the web blogging (blogs), which compares to traditional library catalogue system. For this instant we require a new technique, which provides the information in a dynamic and economic view. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1170 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The objective of this project is to setup a co-operative framework and develop a central index system for accessing the collections of all Affiliated College Libraries of Bangalore University. This is ought to be achieved by applying a new approach for search and retrieval via SRU/W combined with MARC and Dublin core meta-data paradigm; harvest meta-data using Open Archives Initiative – Protocol for Meta-data Harvesting. The project includes a server, client and portal, functionality partly running on Server and client browser resulting in a low implementation barrier, maximum scalability, and browser independence, as well as giving users control over the search interface and what collections to search. Abstract: Web technology is used to provide access to information both within and beyond the institution. In the future there will be greater emphasis on the delivery of information to support learning wherever curriculum programs are being taught, and wherever students are learning at institute or at home. The role of the library resource centre as a service facility will grow. Institutions have a crucial responsibility towards students to develop their aptitude in using the information potential of these information technologies critically and wisely. The paper is aimed at presenting the use of web technology in education. The problem is with organizing educational resources whereby individual learners will be able to access material according to their own leaner profile and needs. The Data for this paper is based on conceptual study including personal observation and interaction with students, library research referring to the important journals, periodicals, publications and research volumes and making use of the web. The authors in this paper have highlighted the various types of web technology useful for learners and educators. In Recommendations and Conclusions, the authors throw light on the need for a resource database for learners. Further research will entail the feasibility of the implementation of a resource-base using a data warehouse and data mining as the driving forces with the Internet/Web technology as the delivery mode. Abstract: Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) is a set of product compatibility standards for wireless local area network based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications. Wi-Fi was intended to be used for mobile devices, Local Area Networks and internet access through Access Points. The importance of communication of information and the technologies required for are stated. The importance of Wi-Fi technology and its application in libraries are stated. If wi-fi broke the shackles of cable networking, wi-max took it a step ahead. Wi-max could just be the most significant technology todate, in making wireless access ubiquitous. 4G will enable wireless subscribers to view high-definition television programming through wireless broadband connections. Wi-fi applications in libraries is like any other implementation, the vital aspect to a successful wireless implementation is also good planning. The technicalities of Wi-Fi and problems are discussed. Suitable solutions to over come these problems are given URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1117 Files in this item: 1
