Abstract: Convergence of technologies has made library and information services across the regional, national and transnational geographic barriers, and reach global users at the ease of time and speed. Developing union catalogues of library holdings is one of the core areas in this regard; which has invited attention for a good number of obvious reasons and objectives. Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) programme of the University Grants Commission (UGC) had launched this noble venture of creating a Union Database of university holding of the country. This study is lined up to have a close look on the State-of-the-Art scenario of the university libraries in the NE region of the country towards accomplishing this venture. Abstract: If there is any place that makes the library a true global hub of information, it is the reference desk or reference section, for this is the heart of librarianship, and it is here that innovative ideas need to be incorporated in order to fulfill this purpose. This paper examines the various innovations in reference service such as consortia and virtual reference service. It briefly describes these new services along with the problems and solutions relating to them. It concludes that while it is important to maintain traditional reference practices, it is also imperative to keep up with the times and embrace new ideas in order to make the library the global hub of information. Abstract: In this emerging knowledge society, there has been a sea change in the knowledge sectors. Library and Information centres and their similar organizations are also not an exception to this. A changing trend in the mode of procurement, storage, processing and particularly in the delivery of services of the libraries is observed in almost all the libraries of the modern age. Also there are libraries continuing the traditional services and attempting towards provision of new services. In the changing scenario, ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has been the most instrumental factor. In this backdrop, in our paper, taking Manipur University library, as a case study, an attempt has been made to highlight the innovative practices adopted in the mode of delivery of services. This paper discusses the paradigm shift from agricultural to industrial economy and then to new Knowledge Economy. Provides a conceptual view of Knowledge management and its key drivers- highlights the evolution and the functions of portals- also elucidates different tools and technologies which act as platform to bring people together to share knowledge in the form of expertise, competencies, skills irrespective of time and space constraints. Concludes that the future is for Knowledge Portals that provide flexible knowledge environment for large number of users. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1025 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Knowledge has become the key driving force in the present day. Gone are the days when organizations were reluctant and complacent in sharing of information and knowledge. Today, every organization has understood the importance of knowledge. In the modern digital information and knowledge environment, a well-defined mechanism is needed to organize, store, and access information and knowledge. Knowledge portals are used as tools for implementing a knowledge management methodology. A knowledge portal is highly beneficial to make the collections accessible to user who expects all knowledge to be obtainable with just a few clicks from inside a web browser. This paper has just focussed on the knowledge portals, which is a new revolution in the field of Library and Information Science. The knowledge portal definitely has potential and challenging tasks for the library and information professionals. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1031 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper presents and analyses the development of open source software and the building of digital library with reference to the GSDL software. It describes digital library and its importance in details. It also discusses with illustrations how to build a digital library by using the open source software i.e. ‘Greenstone Digital Library’. Searching and browsing full text information is also described taking example from New Zealand Digital Library. It identifies the strength and limitation of GSDL. It is predicted that GSDL is becoming popular digital library software because of its flexibility and low cost/no cost of ownership. The author conclude that because of its cost effectiveness and flexibility GSDL can be a powerful tool in bridging the gap of digital divide in India. Abstract: The key concepts open access, open source and open standards are playing a great role today when we talk about borderless libraries. Immense benefits and importance to libraries are being examined. Greater benefits include lowering of cost, greater accessibility and better prospects especially for long term preservation of scholarly works. The paper mainly discuses on the importance and utility of the three concepts i.e. open access, open source and open standards in libraries emerging, which has helped to widened the gap in resource sharing, making it accessible in a far better way, limiting the expenses and above all standardizing which helps different systems to share their resources.
